1 NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2009 Dear Colleagues Half the year has gone by and a lot have been achieved. The NSP committee has noticed the involvement of many members and we would like to extend our appreciation to all for your positive attitude. The rest of the year still promise to be packed with activities. Please inform yourself regarding the points below so that you do not miss out. 1. SWOT Weekend The first SWOT weekend, in the history of the NSP, happened on the 18 th and 19 th of July Twenty-two people were willing to invest their time and money to develop strategies that will secure the future of our profession. The weekend took place at Harmony Conference Center where we gathered at 7 o clock on Saturday morning. People were welcomed with coffee and sandwiches after which we started. The day was divided up in 5 work sessions; in between there was time for 2 tea breaks and lunch. Time was effectively used to identify problem areas as well as to find possible solutions for the problems. Sunday morning was a final wrap-up session where an action plan was developed and allocated to different people. The weekend was facilitated by Mr. U. Roland and Mr. H. Louw. Both of them were willing to do it FREE OF CHARGE. The way they structured and facilitated the happenings over the course of the weekend was absolutely brilliant! Afterwards they presented the NSP with a detailed document that summarized the weekend. The document has been ed to all members, if you need a copy please contact the secretary (Erika Brand: or erikabrand@gmail.com) The weekend was a great success and it certainly is something to repeat next year. Apart form the hard work everybody had some fun and came back being inspired and motivated. If you missed out this time, make sure you are there next year!

2 2. Subcommittees There are a couple of subcommittees that support the NSP Executive committee in all that has to be done. The two existing subcommittees are the Tariffs Committee and the Professional Committee. After the SWOT weekend two extra subcommittees have been established. These committees are the Marketing Committee and the Training Committee. Members of the Marketing Committee are: Edri Hauptfleisch, Rina Valentin and Janine Snyman. They are working hard to market our profession in various ways and they will be responsible for the physio dance and the fun walk/run. Members of the Training Committee are: Bianca Niemeyer, Heliane Roland and Hannelore Petzel. They are planning a basic computer skills course to empower all the members to use modern technology to their advantage. Further more they are planning courses regarding business skills that will enable all physiotherapists to be more business orientated. 3. Business Relay The Bank Windhoek Business Relay took place on the 11 th of July Four teams enrolled; two running teams and two walking teams. Each team covered a distance of 20km. The main reason for participation was to get visible to the public as we want people to know that physiotherapists are actively involved. The NSP arranged for a stand, a gazebo, printed T-shirts, snacks and drinks for participants and supporters. It turned out to be a fun day and we hope to see you all there next year. Special thanks to Edri Hauptfleisch for her help to ensure a successful day. 4. New Executive Committee Members Christine Nashenda (additional member), Etheline Olivier (treasurer) and Tania van Veen (additional member and WCPT representative) resigned form the NSP Executive committee. They have done a lot of work and the NSP would like to extend our thanks to them for the positive input they had. Lindi Christensen and Lara van Wyk have been elected as the new executive committee members. We wish them all the best in their work.

Physiotherapy Week The International Physiotherapy day is on the 8 th of September 2009 but the NSP decided that it is important to make use of a week to promote our profession. Due to the school holidays the Physio Week will be from the 11 th of September to the 19 th of September The week will start with the Physio Dance on the 11 th and it will end on the 19 th with the fun Walk/Run. The theme will again be Physio on the Move as it fits in well with the activities planned. Physio Dance: 11 September 2009 It will be a semi formal dance (open to the public) and a three course dinner will be served. The tickets will be N$300 per couple or N$150 per person. Venue: Wanderes Sports Ground Time: 19:00 for 19:30 Dress Code: Semi Formal Contact person: Edri Hauptfleisch The venue can host 200 people (20 tables of 10 people each). The idea is that each physiotherapist will be responsible for a table. You need to decorate the table and invite 10 people. Those physios interested in booking a table must contact Edri Hauptfleisch for tickets ( ). Tickets will be available from the 17 th of August Fun Walk/Run: 19 September 2009 Registration will start at 6:30 and the walking/running will commence at 7:30. Afterwards there will be snacks and coffee/tea available to all participants. Venue: United Sports Club Price: N$ 20pp This is a fun day for the whole family. Please encourage all your patients to get active ( on the Move ). Flyers will be printed and distributed.

Contact Karin Stofberg for more information. (Mail: karino-s@mweb.com.na ) 7. IPPA The tariffs committee initiated the attendance of the IPPA congress in South Africa. Erika Brand and Tania van Veen presented Namibia at the congress. International private practitioners association (IPPA) helps countries develop political strategies to prevent the problems that physiotherapy, in other countries, struggle with. During the first part of the congress a research study was explained and the outcome discussed. Due to the small numbers that took part in the study the outcome can not be seen as reliable, however the information can be used to suggest future development for the physiotherapy profession.

5 The second part of the congress was allocated to discuss normal matters arising within the association. Becoming a member of IPPA will prevent Namibia from being isolated and it will create possibilities to establish international contacts. World wide physiotherapy is struggling with the same problems and IPPA acts a sound board for Namibia to discuss current situations and, at the same time, it provides the opportunity to gather advice from other countries who have dealt with the same problems we are currently facing. The cost to become a member will roughly amount to N$ 3000/year depending on the exchange rate and the number of private practices established in Namibia. At the AGM meeting the voting was in favor of becoming a member of IPPA. Application for membership is in process. 8. Newspaper articles The NSP has the opportunity to publish a short informative article in the Republikein and NamSun newspapers once a week for 52 weeks. The articles will be on a level that the public can understand and relate to. Once again we want to make use of this opportunity to promote our profession and to educate the public. The NSP would like to remind the authors that all articles should be handed in by the end of August 2009 so that it can be arranged and handed over to the newspapers before the Physio Week.
