2016 ANNUAL REPORT

From the Desk of the President Dear Friends of Rescue, Through our generous donors and supporters, God has faithfully provided the resources needed this year to grow and improve the life changing programs and services we offer to our neighbors across southern California. As you read through this report, remember that each meal served and every night of shelter assists real people who are hurting, hungry, and without hope. As they turn to us for help, we delight to share the love of God and the good news of Jesus Christ. In May we celebrated the ribbon cutting of our newly re-built thrift store production center in North Hollywood, which was destroyed by fire two years earlier. This center sorts and supplies the daily inventory needed to stock our three stores in the San Fernando Valley. These stores enable us to provide refuge, recovery, and restoration on a daily basis to those we serve. We are deeply grateful to each of you for giving, praying, volunteering, and caring so that we can offer help and hope to our neighbors in need. We count it a privilege to partner with local churches and community organizations in bringing real solutions to the problems of poverty. We invite you to drop by for a visit sometime. Thanks for your support and prayers, Gary W. Gray, President & CEO 26% of the Nation s Homeless live in California 43% of the Homeless Population in California live in the counties we serve

OUR STORY Rescue Mission Alliance has served the hungry and homeless since It began as the Oxnard Rescue Mission, a small emergency shelter for men. In 1989, the name changed to Ventura County Rescue Mission to better align with the growth in services provided countywide. In response to the growing need for services in Los Angeles County, the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission was started in 1998, and Rescue Mission Alliance was born. Growth continued with the establishment of the Lighthouse for Women & Children in 1998 and the Valley Food Bank in 2001, and expanded to Santa Barbara County in 2003 with the addition of the Central Coast Rescue Mission in Santa Maria. In 2008, Victor Valley Rescue Mission was added to meet the growing needs of the homeless and addicted in San Bernardino County. The combined services of Rescue Mission Alliance offer hot meals, safe shelter, supportive services, drug and alcohol recovery, food distribution, vocational training, life skills development, computer learning centers, relapse prevention, community outreach programs, and transitional housing. OUR MISSION With the support of our community we offer: Refuge - Food, shelter, and clothing for those in need. Recovery - Biblically based programs to minister to the whole person: body, mind, and spirit. Restoration - Equipping people to lead productive and independent lives. OUR VISION Clients seek us out. Donors prefer to give to us. Employees are proud to work for us. Volunteers are eager to serve with us. Customers enjoy shopping with us.

VENTURA COUNTY RESCUE MISSION Nights of Shelter 55,584 Meals Served 233,427 Restoration is one of the goals of the Ventura County Rescue Mission and Lighthouse. We provide Refuge, food, clothing, and shelter to the very poor and homeless. If they want to go further and really change, we provide Recovery, with our ten-month biblically based Life Recovery Program, leading the way for our graduates to reach their goal of complete Restoration. Andrew Calzada graduated from our Life Recovery Program and, as soon as his fiancé graduated from the Lighthouse for Women & Children, they asked to be married in the mission. On April 2, 2016, they were married in a beautiful ceremony arranged by her mentor from Calvary Chapel. vcrescuemission.org Life Recovery Program Graduates 31 Housed 23 Employed 23 Attending College 8

LIGHTHOUSE FOR WOMEN & CHILDREN Nights of Shelter 17,772 Meals Served 39,485 In 2015, my worst nightmare came true; our children were taken from us when my husband and I were arrested. When we got out, we had nowhere to go. We started to eat at the rescue mission, and I realized we had to do something to get our lives together. I told my husband we needed a program. I met a Lighthouse intern and she told me about their program. Safire came to the Lighthouse and later her husband Rudy came to the Ventura County Rescue Mission. Now, a family that felt hopeless is filled with hope for the future. Safire looks forward to a healthy life with her children, who are currently with their grandmothers. This family may have been through a battle, but today they are on their way to recovery. vcrescuemission.org Life Recovery Program Grads 11 Articles of Clothing 3,390 Women & Children in Stable Housing 92 Employed 48 Children Reunited with Mothers 22

A DIVINE DIFFERENCE Elena states, This is my fourth attempt at sobriety. The first three only worked for a while, until I came to the Lighthouse. The difference between this time in my life and those previous times is that now I have God. Elena had a rough and humble childhood, yet she learned the value of hard work and family love. She didn t start using drugs until well into adulthood. Elena says, At first it was all fun and games, then it was fun with problems, then it was just problems. She had numerous jobs that she could not keep and she found herself homeless. Although she was only homeless one night, it had a profound impact on her. Elena stated, I believe God allowed me to experience one night of what homelessness was going to be like by sleeping outside. I just couldn t endure it even for that one night. I think God knows our character and I believe He knew that one night was enough for me to say that I did not want to live like this anymore. Elena made a wise choice. You should see the difference in her now! She says, I feel like I have matured now since I am learning about God and learning how He wants me to live my life. It s much easier being in the Word of God; it s not hard like some people say it is. If you line your will up with God s, things really do go smoothly. God has allowed me to make it through the toughest times so I can share it with other people. Hopefully they will listen and they won t have to go through what I did. I am very blessed to be at the Lighthouse. I don t know where I would be without it. I am grateful to the people who created the Lighthouse. The Lighthouse makes it possible for us to not worry about our needs because we have everything we need. The time spent here is a gift, remarks Elena.

VALLEY FOOD BANK Dry Goods 967,840 Canned Goods 900,350 Alejandra had been coming to the food pantry in her community. She initially started coming for the food, and over time, began to develop relationships with the volunteers. She noted how loving the volunteers were and how full of faith they were in everything they did. When her husband, Sirelo, slipped into a coma after having a heart attack, she knew exactly where to go for prayer and encouragement. Several months passed by with no sign of Sirelo or Alejandra. Then, just as the food distribution was wrapping up on a warm September morning, the volunteers saw a familiar face. Alejandra rushed up to the distribution with a smile on her face, but she was not alone. By her side was her husband Sirelo. Alejandra told the volunteers that she knew God healed Sirelo and they were there that morning to thank them for their prayers. valleyfoodbank.org Pounds of Fresh Food 2,029,570 Individuals Served 142,634 Families Served 35,312

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY RESCUE MISSION Nights of Shelter 17,092 Meals Served 28,645 Families that Found Housing 33 Articles of Clothing 2,101 I was referred to the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission and that s where the miracle happened. Instead of feeling like the world was against me, I saw people giving their time unselfishly; bringing food for us, and taking time to just sit and talk. It was amazing to see, just when I felt like nobody cared, I was blessed to see just the opposite. Generous donations were brought weekly. I no longer had to sleep in my car; we had a clean, safe place to sleep. I had hope again. Now, thanks to San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, we were able to get our own place. We are so very grateful for all that was done for us. Now, where there was doubt and pain, there is hope and I carry that with me. - Laura Hot Showers 20,772 Employed 53 Attending College 13 Children Served in the Shelter 161 sfvrescuemission.org

I HAD A CHANCE AFTER ALL Lori faced a series of unfortunate events. While working as a live-in caregiver for an elderly woman, Lori was injured on the job and had to have back surgery. Shortly after the surgery the woman she was caring for died. She found herself living in her car and unable to work. During this time, Lori felt hopeless, alone, and unsure of how to move forward from her situation. Through a local agency, she was referred to the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission. She, her daughter Aisha, and granddaughter True moved into the shelter. During Lori s stay at the rescue mission, she felt the staff treated her with dignity and that she was part of a family. Her case manager helped her create a plan to obtain housing and other needed resources. I moved from this place of hopelessness to feeling like I had a chance after all, Lori shared. Seeing others go out and get their own places and how the staff supported them really helped me be motivated. I started believing I could accomplish more. About four months after moving into the shelter, Lori and her family moved into their own apartment. When asked how her family is doing now, Lori said her daughter is finishing cosmetology school and her granddaughter is doing well in school. I love the peace of mind of having a home. To see the smile on my granddaughter s face is wonderful. Words cannot describe it! Lori is now a regular volunteer at the mission. She spends time talking with and encouraging families who are in a situation similar to where she was a few short months ago. She is truly an inspiration.

CENTRAL COAST RESCUE MISSION Boxes of Food 3,092 Meals Served 20,757 Every Thursday around dinner time, a fun-loving, laughing, and screaming-for-joy group of kids run out to meet the mission s SOS truck in a part of town with a predominantly Hispanic population. Most of the moms and dads work in the fields and come home to enjoy dinner with their children in the courtyard where the mission serves. The mission has partnered together with Pastor Tim, Pastor Joel, and the Santa Maria Foursquare Church to meet, not just the physical needs, but the spiritual needs as well. We invite you to come and be part of the exciting SOS Outreach ministry to see and hear the kids laugh and love, to know the kids and their parents, and to meet needs in the name of Jesus. ccrescuemission.org Life Recovery Program Grads 10 Articles of Clothing 1,296 Grads Housed 7 Grads Employed 7 Grads Attending College 3

I graduated five years ago and completed my vocational training here at the thrift store in the electronics department. After that, Mike volunteered for an entire year. Then, he was employed as a cashier for three years. Recently, he has been promoted to pricing the bric-a-brac merchandise in the production department. Mike says, I ve been here six and a half years total. It s a great place. I love working here. I m not surrounded by the old clan. I m working with Christians. The people I work with are not just co-workers, but I consider them my friends, and that makes all the difference in the world.
