4 Cardinal Manning Center The Center is the Society s transitional shelter for homeless men on Skid Row in Los Angeles. The 65 residents are provided with assistance and support in addressing mental health needs and addictions, obtaining employment, securing permanent housing and rebuilding their lives in a safe, nurturing environment. 5 Volunteer Conferences Conferences of Charity are the Society s volunteer-member groups headquartered in local communities, serving the disadvantaged in Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties. Our 2,500 volunteers conduct home visits to provide food, clothing, furniture, appliances, financial assistance, and help with other life-saving needs. For help, call Our volunteers made over 22,000 home visits to the needy last year.

6 Ventura County Social Services Center T o solve the problem of homelessness in Ventura County, we created our Intensive Case Management and Housing program to implement more permanent solutions to homelessness. We help individuals and families that have come onto hard times and are in need of assistance to get back on their feet through the entire year. For help, call

7 Circle V Ranch Camp T he Society s camp embraces 1,200 underserved children every summer. 95% of the low-income kids receive camp scholarships to attend at low cost or for free. Children from impoverished backgrounds learn life skills, improve their self-esteem and learn to love God. The campers spend time in an encouraging environment with positive role models who demonstrate walking the right path. For help, call

8 Thrift Stores The Society s thrift stores in Los Angeles and Long Beach provide low-cost goods for shoppers; jobs to residents from low-income communities; and are a source of free clothing, furniture and appliances to disadvantaged families. 9 A Brief History of SVdP The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was founded in Paris, France in 1833 by a 20-year old student, Frederic Ozanam. Challenged by the poverty he saw on the streets, Frederic organized the first Conference of Charity to help the poor of all religions created by the industrial revolution. Frederic named his conferences after the great French Saint, Vincent de Paul, who was known for his heroic goodness to the poor. Students in the Conference begged for money, food, and fuel to help the desperately poor families they found in the slums of Paris. By 1845 there were Conferences of Charity all over the European continent, as well as in Ireland, England, Greece, Mexico and the United States. Today, the Society is an international organization of volunteer Catholic women and men with more than a million members in 150 countries, and a mission to seek and find the forgotten, the suffering or the deprived.
