I have worked with premature babies throughout my career, and have seen the dramatic changes that March of Dimes research has made in their care and survival. In an average week in Arizona, close to 2,000 babies are born. Of these babies, 251 will be born premature. Each year in the United States, over a half a million babies are born too soon and more than 120,000 babies are born with serious birth defects. We can make a difference. Through the March for Babies event, Cardon Children s Medical Center will be actively involved by starting a Banner-wide Banner Babies team, raising awareness and vital revenue to help March of Dimes prevent birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. 5 march of dimes at work in Arizona March of Dimes supports numerous programs that improve the health of babies in Arizona, including: Local grants Each year, over 60,000 is awarded to select community-based organizations focusing on maternal and infant health. Additionally, the NICU (Nursery Intensive Care Unit) Family Support Program at St. Joseph s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix touches 700 families per year by offering emotional support and education to those with a baby in the NICU. Prematurity Campaign This includes research and education efforts to stop the growing crisis of premature birth. One in eight babies is born too soon and premature birth is the leading killer of newborns. The Arizona Chapter has identified three specific areas to help in the reduction of these numbers and works diligently within the state to ensure adequate results: (1) prenatal care, (2) reduction in planned cesarean births and (3) tobacco cessation. Educational brochures and various other materials focusing on maternal health-related topics are distributed to hospitals, health clinics, doctors offices, pharmacies, and many other organizations throughout Arizona. Additionally, March of Dimes staff and volunteers promote these materials at several health fairs and seminars throughout the state. Research Programs that benefit everyone. 6 form a team Company Teams Employee Team Building. Company participation provides employees a chance to participate in an event that positively impacts the communities in which they live. Why should your company join the fight to save babies? Reduction of Cost of Business. Direct health care costs to employers for premature babies during the first year of life average 46,000, compared to 3,866 for babies born healthy and full term. These costs do not represent the amount of time employees will spend outside the office caring for their baby or the drop in employee productivity. CIGNA Deer Valley Phoenix, AZ School Teams Schools throughout Arizona are signing up to raise funds for healthy babies. Friendly student competitions can be found among clubs within schools or among rival schools. Why should your school join the fight to save babies? Students of all ages will learn the importance of giving back to their communities and several of the main components of project management. Teens Needed. Chain Reaction is a March of Dimes committee, consisting of high school students, grades 10th-12th, who volunteer to provide their student bodies with educational information. They work within the Phoenix and Tucson areas to help schools in their fundraising efforts. To get involved, contact the Arizona Chapter at or az601@marchofdimes.com. Harvest Preparatory Academy Yuma, AZ Family Teams Because the mission is inspired by all babies, all families are vital to our mission. We ask that you invite your family and friends to join in your fundraising efforts and support healthy babies everywhere. Choose a team name that represents your reason for involvement, have team shirts made, share your story with anyone who will listen simply spread the mission and help support babies! Individual Walkers Hundreds of people each year sign up as Individual Walkers and raise funds to help save babies. 7 goal setting Set your goal to help your team stay motivated and on track Walker Money 1. Determine the number of walkers you can recruit to help raise funds. 2. Encourage each walker to raise This can be accomplished by asking 10 people for 20. Encourage walkers to make a list of people who they know well or do business with often, i.e. hair stylists, doctors, babysitters, neighbors, etc. 3. Multiply 200 by the number of walkers you can recruit. Promotions List the fundraisers you will organize and create a timeline for each. Determine a reasonable goal for each fundraiser. Add these totals together. Sponsorship If you are a company team, is your company willing to sponsor March for Babies? Some companies will match dollar-for-dollar or 50% up to a certain amount. Ask your employer and have your donors ask their employers if they have a matching gift program. 10 online fundraising Signing up, managing your team and monitoring your team s progress is easy to do online! At marchforbabies.org you ll find everything you need to help your team succeed. Sign up your team Typically, your March of Dimes representative will talk to you about how to set up your team for online fundraising. Ask them about setting up competitions or how to recognize fundraising successes. Once you are set up, go to marchforbabies.org and click join a team and follow the prompts. Team captain dashboard Online administrators can use the dashboard to manage teams. Check with your chapter representative if you have this role. A team captain is not always the administrator. 10

Tell the story of your ambassador or another reason why your team is participating. Making a personal connection to the March of Dimes mission increases participation. Spread the word Create an easy-to-remember URL for your team page by clicking on edit page on your dashboard. Click edit address and scroll down to enter your company or team name under team vanity URL. Copy the link and include on your flyers, posters and in s to make it easy for people to sign up or make their donation. Communicate, communicate, communicate From your team dashboard, import and manage lists and send s to the team. Send invites to your kick-off, announcements and updates on your team s progress. We keep track of current and past team members so you can easily them team updates and recruitment messages. Help the team raise money Having your team members register and raise money online makes your job easier and helps improve results. Here are things you can do from the dashboard to help your team succeed: Set a goal and post it. Teams raise more money when a goal is promoted. Ask vendors and associates to donate to the team online. Ask people who can t or don t want to walk to support the team with a donation. You have access to real-time progress reports. Share how many people have joined, how much has been raised, who the top fundraisers are, etc. Raise money with your Facebook friends Use our Facebook application to communicate with your March for Babies account and fundraise in real time with your online friends. Promote your company s involvement with March for Babies on your company s Facebook page and encourage your employees to promote their involvement by including the link to their marchforbabies.org fundraising page on their Facebook page. With chapters nationwide and its premier event, March for Babies, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. We help moms have full-term pregnancies and healthy babies. And if something goes wrong, we offer comfort and information to families. We research the problems that threaten our babies and work on preventing them. What is March for Babies? Formerly called WalkAmerica, March for Babies is the March of Dimes biggest fundraiser and America s favorite walking event. Money raised in March for Babies supports the March of Dimes mission to give every baby a healthy start. It is used to fund important research and community programs that help moms have full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. We ve been walking since 1970 and have raised an incredible 2 billion to benefit all babies. Where, when and what time is March for Babies held? March for Babies takes place in more than 900 communities across the United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. There are 12 events within the state of Arizona and most occur in the spring. To find an event near you, visit marchforbabies.org or look at the list of Arizona events on the back cover. How long is the March for Babies route? Routes have no standard length, but most are 6 miles or under. If you can complete the route, great! If not, you can walk any distance that works for you. There are many snack and rest stops along the way. How do I get involved? You can raise money and walk as an individual, with a Family Team or with your company or organization. Can t do the walk, but still want to get involved? Why not volunteer to register walkers, staff checkpoints or offer refreshments? No. All participants are encouraged to raise money or make a monetary donation of 25. Can I bring my bike, in-line skates, skateboard and/or my dog? For the safety of all participants, the March of Dimes discourages the participation of family pets and the use of any mobile device with the exception of wheel chairs, wagons and strollers. 14

15 frequently asked questions What do I need to bring with me to the event? You will need your walker sponsor form and/or your online sponsor form. I want to help raise funds but I cannot attend the event. How do I turn in my money? Please send all monies to the nearest Arizona division office listed below on this page. Don t forget to indicate which team and walker it belongs to so your team will receive credit for the monies earned. Please indicate your team name and the name of the walker, if the funds are to be allocated to an individual s fundraising efforts. What is Bank Day? In many communities, Bank Day is held the week of March for Babies to allow you to skip the lines at registration on event day. This offers you and your team the opportunity to pre-register and pick up your incentives before the event! Simply bring your Team Registration Form and walker funds. March of Dimes staff and volunteers will verify totals and will provide you with your walker incentives. Contact your March of Dimes representative to determine when your Bank Day is being held. How long do I have to raise money and still qualify for the walker incentives? You can raise money throughout the duration of the year. However, to qualify for the incentives, your money will need to be turned in no later than two weeks after the date of the event. Can I purchase a March for Babies T-shirt? No. All incentives are for walkers who raise the indicated amounts. March of Dimes spends funds raised in March for Babies on research and programs that promote the health of babies.
