PAGE The New NIH Biosketch Requiremets (or How I Ruied My Summer Vacatio) As of May 25, 2015, the Natioal Istitutes of Health is requirig that a modified biosketch format be submitted to NIH with grat applicatios. Do t kill the messeger - ASIP was oe of may orgaizatios that expressed cocers to the NIH that the ew biosketch format would add a admiistrative burde to scietists ad potetially discrimiate agaist juior ivestigators, with oly dubious beefits. However, NIH felt that its pilot program was a success ad proceeded with the ew requiremets despite egative commets. What are the major chages i the NIH Biosketch? 4 MEMBERSHIP MATTERS 7 JOURNAL NEWS Part A is ow called Persoal Statemet, istead of the previous Biosketch. It serves the same purpose. Provide a brief descriptio of how you are well-suited for your role i the project described i the applicatio. This is a opportuity for you to describe some cotributios to sciece that are ot icluded i the ew Sectio C (see below). Part B ( Positios ad Hoors ) is similar to the previous Part B. I foud that I had to delete may of my sigificat Hoors ad Professioal Activities to leave eough space to complete the ew Part C. Part C is ow called Cotributio to Sciece. This used to be Selected Peer-reviewed Publicatios, which you could cull from your full bibliography. That used to be a relatively easy task. I my case, I had room to iclude 50 of my most sigificat peer-reviewed articles i the previous Part C. The ew Cotributio to Sciece limits you to a maximum of 20 refereces. You are asked to briefly describe up to five of your most sigificat cotributios to sciece. For each cotributio, you should idicate: - The historical backgroud that frames the scietific problem. - The cetral fidigs. - The ifluece of the fidigs o the progress of sciece or applicatio to health or techology. - Your specific role i the described work. Part C also requires you to provide a URL to a full list of your published work as foud i a publicly available digital database such as SciENcv or My Bibliography, which are maitaied by the US Natioal Library of Medicie. SciENcv is a applicatio i My NCBI that helps you create olie professioal profiles that ca be made public to share with others. NIH era Commos, NSF Fast Lae, or ORCID accout holders ca lik their accouts to NCBI ad ca populate their SciENcv profiles from the other accouts. Part D ( Research Support ) is uchaged. List both selected ogoig ad completed research projects for the past 3 years, begiig with the projects most relevat to the research proposed i the applicatio. Idicate the overall goals of the projects ad the resposibilities of the key perso idetified o the Biographical Sketch. The page limit has bee icreased from 4 to 5 pages. So how did I waste my time durig my summer vacatio (or how did I waste the time of ASIP s Project Coordiator)? My first step was to work o the Part C requiremet to provide a URL to a full list of my published work i a publicly available digital database. Beig a trustig ad aïve idividual, I thought this would be a easy task. NOT! Before leavig for a week with my family, I asked Costaza Gozalez, ASIP s Project Coordiator, to follow the istructios provided by NIH ad use SciENcv to pull my peer-reviewed publicatios together for me. As it turs out, followig the NIH istructios was major error i judgemet. (See below for a better approach.) I haded her my full curriculum vitae, which cotaied over 140 publicatios (ot abstracts, but several book chapters), as a resource. Whe I came back from vacatio, Costaza said, [Housto], we have a problem. She was oly able to fid 34 of my publicatios o her first attempt. Because I have published uder Mark E. Sobel, Mark Sobel, M Sobel, ME Sobel, she eeded to go back ad search uder all variatios. (I hate to thik how burdesome this is to wome scietists who have published uder their maide, married, ad/or hypheated ames!) We gradually got my list up to 73. The I realized that SciENcv cuts off all authors after the fifth author. So most of my sigificat refereces as a Pricipal Ivestigator, where I was listed i the last positio after at least five authors, were ot beig captured. Costaza the had to search for all first authors of early 70 articles, fid their publicatios, ad select the relevat oes for which I was a co-author, ad add them to My Bibliography. We fially foud most of my peer-reviewed publicatios. For reasos that are still ot clear to me, a few refereces ever showed up, eve though those jourals are i PubMed, but the cost/beefit ratio of tryig to achieve a complete list was ot worth the effort. Do t do what we did: A easy work-aroud is to go directly to PubMed ad search for your ame (i its various iteratios). The PubMed search does ot cut off ay of the authors so all your refereces will come up with less effort. By the way, Costaza also tried eterig my positios, hoors ad awards ito the database. This was very cumbersome, sice the database requires etry i a particular format with required fields. Missig some mior iformatio, or have a uusual etry that does t fit the format? The system is uforgivig ad will reject your etry. I fially gave up o that ad maually etered my positios ad hoors ad awards ito the NIH Biosketch form [OMB No /0002 (Rev. 08/12 Approved Through 8/31/2015)]. By the way, worried about the Approved Through 8/31/2015? Apparetly we should just igore that! Next, it was time for me to complete Part C ad select up to five sigificat cotributios to sciece. I have bee publishig sice It was o easy task for me to orgaize my most importat work ito just five areas ad just the two pages that were left after icludig my Positios ad Hoors. The strategy I fially used was to determie the most sigificat idividual articles I had published ad the try to group them ito five areas so I could list my best refereces that were published i high impact jourals. What advice would I give to a juior ivestigator? It is of course up to the Study Sectio, but I thik that istead of tryig to come up with five cotributios (so you ca show off up to 20 publicatios), it is more effective to provide a cohesive descriptio of your research i oe or two groupigs (ad fewer publicatios) i which you ca provide a comprehesive descriptio of the work ad its ifluece. CLIA regulatios prohibit the retur of research results where the laboratory testig was doe i a o-cliacertified laboratory. ASIP summarized the followig core priciples that are related to the disharmoy betwee CLIA ad HIPAA regulatios cocerig retur of research results:. Laboratories providig patiet care should be CLIA-certified. Differet laboratory stadards for patiet care ad for research are appropriate. Patiet care stadards are desiged to esure that the right result is provided to the right patiet, addressig aalytic, test, ad cliical validity stadards. The goal of research laboratory testig is to expad upo geeralizable kowledge. Research sample testig procedures are desiged to accurately capture data from specimes i aggregate. The Natioal Istitutes of Health 1 ad the Natioal Sciece Foudatio 2 have recetly expressed cocer about the lack of research reproducibility ad rigor i precliical research. Obligatios to research subjects should ot vary depedig upo the ature of the etity. Istead, the ature of the research ad the role of laboratory testig should be the IRB s focus. Research proposals should proactively address cotigecies for fidigs that may have implicatios for cliical care (icidetal fidigs). Best practice is to address foreseeable cotigecies so that research participats are made aware, through the iformed coset process, of what may occur ad what may be required for follow-up, eve i rare situatios such

Program Report: Liliaa Espioza The Summer Research Opportuity Program i Pathology (SROPP), sposored by the America Society of Ivestigative Pathology (ASIP), has provided me with oe of the most rewardig summer itership experieces. Thaks to this opportuity, I was able to be a part of a admirable scietific laboratory with a amazig research team, headed by my world-reowed research metor: Dr. Cecelia Yates, at the Uiversity of Pittsburgh. Beig i a small liberal arts college, I have had limited exposure to a vibrat ad collaborative lab settig. This program exposed me to a more realistic ad gratifyig aspect of the research field. For istace, weekly semiars discussig curret research projects beig coducted by other faculty members of the uiversity; potetial careers to cosider after graduate school; ad life experieces of other graduate studets (MD, PhD ad MD/PhD), previous SROPP members, ad faculty offered kowledgeable advice. Additioally, all of the log hours spet i the laboratory durig weekdays ad weekeds, as well as the collaborative ature of my research project, served as a more realistic represetatio of a researcher s career, allowig me to substatiate my decisio to pursue a graduate career as a medical researcher. My research was primarily cocered with the ati-fibrotic properties of a CXCL10 agoist, IP-10 peptide, i the case of myocardial ifarctio (MI). This peptide, developed ad sythesized by my metor, i collaboratio with Dr. Richard Bodar, has bee show to have ati-agiogeic ad atifibrotic properties durig the regeerative stages of woud healig i mice. I terms of the medical applicatio of my study, the excessive depositio of extracellular matrix (ECM) compoets by activated fibroblasts, otherwise kow as fibrosis, is oe of the primary reasos for the occurrece of heart failure i the world. Heart failure has uiquely icreased i prevalece, for it lacks therapeutic optios targetig the progressive fibrotic respose that commoly characterizes its pathogeesis. The objective of my research project was to determie whether IP-10 peptide similarly reduces fibrosis i the heart, usig a coculture model i vitro, ad determie its relevace to MI i vivo. I was co-metored o this project by Dr. Mote Willis at the Uiversity of North Carolia. A myocardial ifarctio was iduced i the cardiac tissue of mice by performig a permaet ligatio o the left aterior descedig coroary artery. Two weeks post-mi, hearts of both experimetal ad sham cotrols were staied for CXCL10, its receptor CXCR3, ad ECM compoets by immuohistochemistry (IHC) to determie their temporal regulatio i vivo. Oce the expressio of the aforemetioed compoets was determied i tissue, cardiomyocytes (CM), cardiac fibroblasts (CF), or CM/CF co-cultures were challeged with trasformig growth factor beta (TGF-β) ad/or treatmet with CXCL10 or IP-10 peptide i order to determie expressio levels at the cellular level. More specifically, the i vitro cellular fibrotic respose was assessed for ECM expressio, migratio patter, ad apoptosis by IHC. IHC aalysis of the heart two weeks post-mi demostrated a decrease i CXCL10, yet a icrease i its receptor CXCR3, whe compared to sham cotrols. Treatmet of CM/CF co-culture with IP-10 peptide i combiatio with TGF-β resulted i reduced expressio of α-smooth muscle acti, collage I, fibroecti, ad teasci C, compared to TGF-β aloe. These fidigs were ot observed i sigle cell (CM or CF) cultures. Our data suggests that both chemokie CXCL10 ad its agoist, IP- 10 peptide, play a ati-fibrotic role i remodelig, myocardial ifarctio-iduced cardiac tissue. Moreover, it establishes IP-10 peptide as a possible ati-fibrotic treatmet, although further studies are warrated. Overall, I fid that the valuable experiece I have gaied from this program goes well beyod receivig esoteric advice o pursuig a graduate career, beig exposed to other areas of research, ad addig ewly leared experimetal protocols to my library of research methodologies. The patiece ad metorship provided by Dr. Yates, as well as the itrisic gratificatio I received from the experimetal data geerated i this short time-spa, have bee istrumetal to my developmet as a researcher, ad i the advacemet of my academic career. I firmly believe that this positive experiece has played a major role i my decisio to pursue a MD/PhD degree ad cosider that there is othig more valuable tha the kowledge I have acquired, the frieds I have made, ad the cotiued metorship I receive from Dr. Yates.
