1 St. Jude Leadership Society Congratulations! We are reaching out to invite you to apply to be part of the St. Jude Leadership Society. The St. Jude Leadership Society (SJLS) brings together high-performing high school students for a unique philanthropic leadership development experience in support of the work of St. Jude. As an SJLS member, you will have the opportunity to engage in dynamic leadership development sessions while raising funds for St. Jude during a five-month period that culminates with a Mission Trip to St. Jude Children s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN, on July 13-15, Member Expectations Attend a minimum of three local Leadership Development Sessions. Each local leadership session will run 3 hours in length. The first hour and a half will include a presenter and discussion of the topic for the day, 30 minutes for breaks, and one hour for small group fundraising strategy discussion to share fundraising challenges, success stories, and ideas. Your mentor will join you on your trip to Memphis and must be approved by a legal guardian. Please select an adult whom you look up to and respect to join you on this wonderful journey. Raise a minimum of $2,500 for St. Jude children s Research Hospital by June 30, All Members who raise $2,500 will qualify for the St. Jude Mission Trip. For members who raise $5,000, transportation and lodging for the St. Jude Mission Trip will be provided for the member and their mentor. All SJLS members embark on a leadership development journey that supports them in becoming the best versions of themselves while they learn about philanthropy and work to support the mission of St. Jude. National Civil Rights Museum Experience St Jude Children s Research Hospital Experience The fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude, ALSAC, has a strong connection to Chicago, where ALSAC was founded on Oct. 10, Upon incorporation, ALSAC immediately began working to raise the funds necessary to build and then maintain St. Jude, which opened in Since then, treatments innovated at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent. To this day, no family ever receives a bill for treatment, travel, food, or lodging because all a family should have to worry about is helping their child live. In the early days of ALSAC, Danny Thomas reached out to young people for their support and leadership. Teenagers were among the first supporters of St. Jude, raising valuable funds and awareness for the hospital through the Teen March, and helping to keep Danny Thomas inspirational vision and promise alive.

3 Experience Overview 30 high performing high school students from the Chicago area will be selected for each annual St. Jude Leadership Society class Each SJLS member will identify a mentor, an adult they look up to in their life who will share in their experience. Mentors will be invited to participate in most of the leadership sessions and will be expected to join the SJLS member on their St. Jude Mission Trip to Memphis, TN in July. Four of the leadership sessions will be scheduled in the Chicago area while the Building Your Personal Brand session and the I Am session are scheduled to take place in Memphis during the St. Jude Mission Trip in July. The Chicago leadership sessions will take place in February, March, April and May. The St. Jude mission trip will include 2 leadership sessions as outlined above, a St. Jude experience, and a Civil Rights Museum experience. Each SJLS member will be asked to raise a minimum of $2,500 by June 30, Each SJLS member will have their own fundraising web page and will receive ideas on how to raise money throughout the leadership development sessions. SJLS members will also receive coaching throughout their experience. SJLS members who raise $2,500 will receive Mission Trip conference and meals for themselves and their mentor SJLS members who raise $5,000 will receive Mission Trip conference, meals, hotel, and transportation for themselves and their mentor All SJLS members will be invited to write a word essay on leadership to be submitted by July 6, College Scholarships will be awarded during the St. Jude Mission Trip in recognition of the following achievements: o Most Funds Raised o Greatest Engagement Effort o Most Creative Fundraising Effort o Best Leadership Essay

4 How it all began As a young man, Danny Thomas had a simple goal: to entertain people and be successful enough at it to provide for his wife and family. But work wasn t easy to come by. As he and his family struggled, his despair grew. He wondered if he should give up on his dreams of acting or find a steady job. He turned to St. Jude Thaddeus, the patron saint of hopeless causes. Show me my way in life, he vowed to the saint one night in a Detroit church, and I will build you a shrine. That prayer to St. Jude marked a pivotal moment in his life. Soon after, he began finding work, eventually becoming one of the biggest stars of radio, film and television in his day. And as one of the world s biggest celebrities, Danny used his fame to fulfill his vow to St. Jude Thaddeus and to change the lives of thousands of children and families. Danny s shrine to St. Jude Thaddeus was originally to be a general children s hospital located somewhere in the south. Danny s mentor, Cardinal Samuel Stritch, recommended he look to Memphis, Tennessee, the cardinal s hometown. By 1955 Danny and a group of Memphis businessmen he d rallied to build the hospital decided it should be more than a general children s hospital. At the time, the survival rate for childhood cancers was 20%, and for those with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) the most common form of childhood cancer only 4% of children would live. They believed that St. Jude could help these families with nowhere else to turn. St. Jude would become a unique research institution where the world s best doctors and scientists would work together to cure childhood cancer, sickle cell and other deadly diseases. And for families with children battling these diseases, Danny wanted to remove the burden of treatment costs so they were free to focus on their child. With the idea of his shrine to St. Jude set, Danny and his supporters focused on raising the funds to build and maintain it. Danny began raising money for his vision in the early 1950s. By 1955, the Memphis business leaders who d joined his cause also began local fundraising efforts. Danny also wanted to get the word out across the country about what he was doing and enlist the support of everyone he could. Frequently, Danny and his wife, Rose Marie, crisscrossed the United States, speaking about his dream to build St. Jude Children s Research Hospital to any group that would listen, asking for their support. They kept such a hectic pace that Danny and Rose Marie once visited 28 cities in 32 days.

5 Funding the Hospital Along with the construction, Danny knew he had to find a way to fund the hospital s annual operation. He turned to his fellow Americans of Arabic-speaking descent. Danny believed that by supporting St. Jude, this group of Americans could thank the United States for the gifts of freedom given their parents and also be a noble way of honoring their forefathers who had immigrated to America. Danny's requests struck a responsive chord. In 1957, 100 representatives of the Arab-American community met in Chicago to form ALSAC (American Lebanese and Syrian Associated Charities) with the sole purpose of raising funds for the support of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Since that day in Chicago, ALSAC has been responsible for all the hospital's fundraising efforts, raising hundreds of millions annually through benefits and solicitation drives among Americans of all ethnic, religious and racial backgrounds. Today, ALSAC is the nation s second largest health care charity* and is supported by the generosity of 9 million donors and the efforts of more than 1 million volunteers nationwide. St. Jude Children s Research Hospital opened its doors on February 4, 1962, based on Danny's dream that "no child should die in the dawn of life." Since then, we have made incredible strides in childhood cancer research. We ve helped improve the survival rate of childhood cancer from 20% to 80%. And Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, the disease with a virtual death sentence in 1962, now has a survival rate of 94 percent. Today, we re a world leader in developing new, improved treatments for children with cancer, and we create more clinical trials for cancer than any other children's hospital. We freely share those breakthroughs, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children. And still today as when we opened our doors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food because all they should worry about is helping their child live. Danny Thomas passed away in 1991, but he left us with an enduring legacy and commitment to saving the lives of children everywhere. We won t stop until no child dies from cancer.

6 The ALSAC Preamble ONE HUNDRED AND ONE YEARS AGO, our people began a migration to the blessed shores of these United States of America, seeking the freedoms and opportunities won for us by our founding fathers. SINCE THAT TIME, we have increased greatly in number and have been enjoying the protection of the "Bill of Rights," yet we have never done anything as a body to justify our use of these rights. True, many of our people have distinguished themselves as good Americans and have risen to lofty heights in their particular line of endeavor; but we have never really distinguished ourselves in a body. We have never united on a national basis in a common American cause. THEREFORE: we who are proud of our heritage; having met in Washington, D.C., in June, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Seven, then again in Indianapolis, Indiana, in June, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Seven, and now in Chicago, Illinois, on this Tenth Day of October, in the Year of Our Lord, Nineteen Hundred and Fifty-Seven; have formed a non-profit, non-sectarian, charitable corporation titled ALSAC (American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities) dedicated to the parable of the "Good Samaritan," to love and care for our neighbor, regardless of color or creed. This dedication shall manifest itself in the maintenance of St. Jude Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, which, in turn, is dedicated to the cure of leukemia and related blood diseases in children, absolutely free. In so doing, we shall serve God and Our Country and we shall serve the good names of our fathers and mothers who made possible our birth in America, the land of the free. WE, at long, long, last, shall take our rightful place in this community of nationalities standing proudly with our heads held high in the knowledge that we have earned the right to perpetuate the name of our heritage and maintain our reputation as unquestioned good American Citizens. WITH THESE THOUGHTS engraved in my mind and my heart, I shall call upon that powerful patron, St. Jude Thaddeus, to obtain for our organization the blessing of "Our Heavenly Father."
