5 What is a Critical Incident? Powerful traumatic events that initiate the crisis response Usual coping mechanisms may be overwhelmed 70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced some type of traumatic event at least once in their lives. 1 Up to 20% of those people go on to develop PTSD. 1 85% of PTSD cases in the U.S. are not related to military service Source: ptsdunited.org Dr Charles Marmar

7 The Costs 1 in 3 workplace claims are related to mental health 35 million work days lost to Canada s 10 million workers 1 Presenteeism - workers showing up and accomplishing little costs an estimated $22 billion per year 1 How many workplace accidents or injuries may have mental health as a contributing factor? 1. 8 Peer Support and CISM Peer Support programs as supplements to Employee Assistance Programs have emerged as the standard in law enforcement and fire suppression communities The ICISF has been an industry leader for over 20 years studying and teaching a system of peer support to mitigate the effects of critical incidents in the workplace

12 How does this apply in mining? Peer support is highly effective when: Recipient group is specially trained/educated Group possesses a unique culture. Group members perceive themselves as unique, little understood, misunderstood. Group extends minimal trust to those outside the group.
