1 SHRM Medina County Newsletter Inside this issue: President s Corner 1 SHRM Medina County Call for Candidates Member Appreciation Luncheon and Silent Auction Donate to the SHRM Foundation Silent Auction Welcome New Members A Special Thank You 6 Announcements 7 Calendar 8 President s Corner Hello, October 2013 Volume 1, Issue 7 Engage. Inspire. Lead. As you know, hundreds of thousands of Americans woke up this past Tuesday unsure about where their next paycheck will come from. Others found their vacations to national parks cut short and others were frustrated with the fact that there are fewer federal workers around to handle their questions. Yes, for the first time in 17 years, the United States government shut down on October 1 st as the House of Representatives, the Senate and the White House were unable to reach an agreement to fund the federal government for the 2014 fiscal year. There are many implications for HR and employers are still obligated to meet statutory deadlines and compliance requirements of the underlying statutes. All we can do is meet deadlines to the best of our abilities, submit information that has been requested, document and hope that a budget bill is approved in the near future. We have many announcements this month. First, our Annual Member Meeting is October 22 nd and elections will be held for the 2014 Board of Directors. Board of Directors term is one year. Each elected Officer and Director shall assume office on January 1, Officers and Directors may not be elected to serve more than 2 consecutive terms in the same position. Nathan Pangrace, our chapter s Legislative Director, will be presenting the 2013 Legislative Update. We hope you all plan to attend. November 7 th is our Diversity Event. It will be held at 11:30 at Weymouth Country Club. Mike Kovak, Medina County Auditor and Veteran, will be our guest speaker. This event is about honoring diversity in the workforce and we are highlighting Veterans for our diversity initiative this year. We are also highlighting Wreaths for Western Reserve, which was formed to solicit donations for the placement of wreaths at headstones of our fallen heroes laid to rest at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio. December 12 th is our Annual Member Appreciation Meeting and Silent Auction to benefit The SHRM Foundation. If you would like to contribute to this year s auction, please complete the form on our website under events and or fax to us. Your charitable donation would be greatly appreciated. Lunch is complementary to all chapter members. Guests are welcome to the event at the non-member price. Two of our members have recently been married. Congratulations to Erika Nowlin, our chapter Secretary and Jackie Van Hoch, our chapter VP Membership. I also would like to remind everyone that we now have Pay Pal on our web site and hope this helps you when making payments for attendance to our meetings and events. The 2013 Ohio Human Resource Conference HR Making Connections that Count was fantastic and there were many lessons learned from the great speakers that presented. The Ohio Human Resource Conference is held annually in September and is sponsored by the Ohio SHRM State Council. This two and a half day conference draws close to 900 human resource professionals from Ohio and surrounding states. The Ohio Conference Programs Committee strives each year to select a lineup of first-class speakers, many nationally known, with the goal of presenting on educational, informative and innovative topics. Next year s conference will be on September 17-19, 2014 at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Sandusky, Ohio. Mark your calendars for all of these exciting upcoming events and we hope to see you there! -Karen Sating, Chapter President
