2 2 EDITOR S NOTE The resent edition is based on the first edition of Rachmaninoff s Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Ous 31, ublished in 1910 (Mosco: A. Gutheil). All of the comoser s erformance indications have been reserved. In the original edition Rachmaninoff emloys Russian temo terms in the choral arts and Italian equivalents in the iano reduction; in the resent edition these Italian equivalents aear in brackets alongside the original Russian terms and, in cases here the editor felt the Russian could be translated more comletely, are augmented by additional Italian or English terms. Common terms of exression (e. g., rallentando, iù mosso, etc.) are rendered in Italian only. In comosing music for the Divine Liturgy, Rachmaninoff set many brief resonses (e. g., Lord, have mercy, Amen, etc.) in addition to the maor hymns. In concert erformances these resonses should be omitted, unless they are accomanied by the aroriate liturgical exclamations (ekhoneses). (A more detailed discussion of ekhonesis in the Russian Orthodox liturgy aears in the full score of the Divine Liturgy.)
