2 Dear All Letter from the Chair I am pleased to report that your Committee continues to actively promote our Society with the aim of increasing our profile and developing PAG both at home and abroad. There has been contact with the Map of Medicine to see whether the Society can contribute to the various pathways that are relevant to our speciality. We have also formalised a working relationship with the NHS National Commissioning Group for Highly Specialised Services with the next review due in The work we have been carrying out relating to Networks will be especially important in this regard. There is the potential for the Society to actively participate in the RCOG Eurovision programme with a proposal to organise a PAG workshop in Pristina, Kosova in an attempt to introduce and provide training and collaboration in PAG in Eastern Europe. The Society has confirmed support for this venture. As in previous years we are also hosting a breakout session at the Senior Staff/Annual Professional Conference at the RCOG in November. This year the topics to be covered are pelvic pain in adolescents, urogynaecology and common gynaecological problems in children. Such opportunities are important to increase awareness of the Society and potentially increase our membership base. Links are being forged with the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare and there are good prospects for an enduring relationship. The Faculty anticipate that their trainees will attend our annual meetings during their training. The Society has been asked to participate in the Faculty s scientific meeting to be held in Liverpool next May. As ever any volunteers to participate and present in this and other meetings are very welcome to contact me directly and I shall be delighted to hear from you. An appeal has been lodged with the Advisory Committee for Clinical Excellence Awards which has declined the Society s request to qualify as a nominating body on the basis of our relatively small number of consultant members and that we are purportedly linked to the RCOG. Our own enquiries have revealed that there are smaller Societies than ours which currently have nominating rights and moreover our Society is multidisciplinary and cannot be represented by one College. The Committee are also putting the finishing touches to a new document on standards in PAG which we hope to launch early next year. I am advised that there are no plans to change the Advanced Training Skills Module on PAG at present.

3 Our patient information leaflets are being renewed and I would like to encourage you all to log in and contribute to our website in any way you can. Please remember that the UK map of services needs to be updated regularly and we can only do this if you let us know as and when there are changes to the services provided. Finally Alun Williams and I have been working with the RCOG in preparation for the 2011 Training Day and Annual Clinical Meeting which will be held at the College on 24 and 25 January. We have attempted to piece together a varied programme which complements but not reproduces the content of other recent meetings and hope that you and your colleagues will support this event. The two days provide a unique forum to explore the issues surrounding PAG in our day to day practice. A bursary scheme is being introduced for those presenting research and other work at the annual meeting. We shall be particularly pleased to be able to welcome one of the leading lights in North American PAG, Professor Joe Sanfilippo from the University of Pittsburgh, who will be travelling over from the USA in order to deliver the Jack Dewhurst Memorial Lecture. The Society is also publicising this meeting via the EURAPAG newsletter and website and hope that many of our European colleagues will also be able to attend. Other meetings to come include the European Congress in Bulgaria between May 2011 and the FIGO meeting in Rome in We are looking to a collaborative joint enterprise with the RCOG in 2013 to coincide with the next British Congress. With my very best wishes Yours in PAG Paul Wood Chair of BritSPAG Frontiers in Paediatric and Gynaecology: Training day and Annual Meeting a date for your diaries The next Annual Meeting and training day will be on 24 and 25 January at the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. An excellent programme has been put together by Paul Wood and Alun Williams which promises to be an interesting and exciting meeting. In particular, we are delighted that Professor Joseph Sanfilippo from the University of Pittsburgh will be giving the Sir Jack Dewhurst Memorial Lecture. Please do encourage your colleagues and trainees to attend. We look forward to seeing you in January!

4 Call for Abstracts closing date 17 December 2010 Abstracts are invited to be submitted for consideration for oral presentation at the Annual Meeting in January We are very pleased to offer a travel bursary of 400 as the prize for the best oral presentation to allow a trainee to present their work at a National or International Conference. Abstract forms are available on the website. Please submit all abstracts to BritSPAG secretary Naomi Crouch on naomi_crouch@yahoo.co.uk by December for consideration. Stop Press! Patient Information leaflets are now available on the website to download. Conditions include vulvovaginitis, labial fusion, vaginal dilation and Rokitansky syndrome. Baby News! Congratulations to BritSPAG committee member Gail Busby on the safe arrival of Dylan George on October 4 th. We wish Gail, Graham and family all the best! Sir Jack Dewhurst Memorial Lecture Roll Call 2011 Professor Joseph Sanfilippo Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA 2010 Professor Christopher RJ Woodhouse Professor of Adolescent Urology, University College London Hospital A guide to congenital abnormalities for the gynaecologist 2009 Dr Gerard Conway Consultant Endocrinologist, University College London Hospital Adult outcomes of Disorders of Sex Development 2008 Mr J Richard Smith Consultant Gynaecologist, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London Uterine Transplantation 12 European Congress on Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Bulgaria The European Congress for PAG will be held in Plovidv, Bulgaria on May Further details can be obtained from the EuraPAG website: Bookmark our page!

5 World Congress on Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Montpellier, France 2010 The World Congress in PAG was held in Montpellier in May 2010, with several UK BritSPAG members attending. As ever, it was a pleasure to meet European and International colleagues and exchange thoughts and views. The meeting itself was well attended with over 500 delegates present, all enjoying the sunny weather and pavement cafes! Highlights included presentations from Professor Anne Garden discussing the role of the paediatric gynaecologist in the management of prepubertal ovarian cysts. Recent work at Liverpool Women s Hospital showed that the majority of cases were managed by paediatric surgeons, without input from gynaecologists, and most girls were therefore undergoing oophorectomy. A lively and informative debate followed from the multidisciplinary audience. Sarah Creighton gave an update on genital surgery and controversies in long-term outcomes, emphasising the importance of informed consent for parents and the option of deferring surgery. She also delivered a lecture entitled The role of laparoscopy in the diagnosis of PAG conditions and controversially started by stating that laparoscopy had no role in the diagnosis of PAG conditions! Once the audience had caught its breath she went to explain that all preoperative planning may be achieved with magnetic resonance imaging, and the laparoscopic surgery should therefore be operative, and was able to elaborate on the pioneering work the team at UCL has carried out in laparoscopic treatments of various DSDs and Mullerian anomalies. Dr Dan Apter from Finland gave a fascinating lecture about the development of adolescent sexuality, and the approach to adolescents in a clinical setting. Dr Ken Ong from Cambridge gave much food for thought in his excellent lecture about the genetic disposition of childhood obesity. The work by BritSPAG on clinical networks was presented by Jane MacDougall and was greeted with much interest by delegates. In particular the hub and spoke approach was discussed, with the role of secondary and tertiary referral centres to co-ordinate care. Several BritSPAG members had poster presentations, with Rebecca Deans from UCL giving an oral presentation. Ida Ismail-Pratt also gave a prize presentation on her work with Sarah Creighton with Rokitansky syndrome. Professor Charles Sultan was congratulated on arranging an excellent conference, with good scientific content and multidisciplinary involvement. As we perched our newly acquired French sunglasses on our heads we were able to reflect on leaving the conference slightly wiser and more educated (certainly in my case), with the pleasure of having reinforced old friendships and the meeting of new colleagues.
