1 What PATIENTS About TUNA Say Therapy TUNA THERAPY I would consider it to be a complete success. I have essentially no residual problems of any kind. I m back to the way I was before I ever had any symptoms at all. J.B. O. It s allowed me to change my lifestyle. I don t wake up in the middle of the night, and I feel like I am living the same kind of life I used to before my prostate became enlarged. Leo K. Urination is like it was when I was a teenager. Bill K. I am very pleased. It s changed my life. It s made my life much more comfortable. Richard K. For more information about TUNA Therapy, visit or call x3500. 2 /Ptnt Broch/NCS 7/19/02 1:39 PM Page 3 There is SOMETHING that men OVER 50 should KNOW BPH is benign prostatic hyperplasia, a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that restricts the flow of urine from the bladder. If you are over 50 and have this condition, you are not alone. BPH affects millions of men worldwide. BPH symptoms include: The need to urinate more often, especially at night Sudden sensation that you will wet yourself A sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder Weak urine stream Need to strain or push bladder when beginning to urinate TERMS YOU SHOULD KNOW Benign prostatic hyperplasia A noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that obstructs the flow of urine through the urethra Bladder A muscular sac located in the lower abdomen where urine is stored until secreted Impotence Failure to initiate or maintain an erection Prostate A walnut-sized gland located at the base of the male bladder surrounding the first part of the urethra Retrograde ejaculation Ejaculation where semen travels up the urethra toward the bladder instead of outside the body Urethra The tube that carries urine from the bladder, semen from the prostate and sperm from the testicles out through the penis 1 When BPH symptoms cause discomfort, embarrassment, sleep disruption or unwanted lifestyle changes, you should consider seeking treatment. Your physician can easily screen for BPH by performing simple tests such as blood and urine tests, physical exams of your prostate or ultrasound. 2
3 /Ptnt Broch/NCS 7/19/02 1:39 PM Page 5 Medtronic TUNA Therapy FOR A BETTER LIFE Your treatment options for BPH include drug therapies, surgery or minimally invasive thermal therapies such as TUNA (Transurethral Needle Ablation) Therapy. TUNA Therapy is effective, safe, and fast.1 The procedure is performed in an office or outpatient setting and may require only local anesthesia. KEY BENEFITS OF TUNA THERAPY Relief from BPH symptoms Short procedure time Procedure performed in an office or outpatient setting Procedure covered by Medicare and most other insurance providers Quick recovery (usually within 48 hours) Few side effects and adverse events1 3 4
4 Frequently Asked QUESTIONS About TUNA Therapy How do I know if TUNA Therapy is right for me? If you are experiencing symptoms of BPH, you should consult your physician. Your physician will run a series of tests to determine if you indeed have BPH. The decision of how to treat your BPH should then be decided in conjunction with your physician. How does the procedure work? TUNA Therapy is a nonsurgical treatment. You will be given a mild sedative to take orally, and local anesthesia is delivered to the prostate via a small catheter inserted into the urethra. Your physician will then insert the TUNA device, which delivers lowlevel radio frequency energy directly into the prostate. This energy shrinks and destroys the prostate tissue. It then relieves the constriction on the urethra and improves the symptoms of BPH. After the procedure is complete, you will be given fluids to drink and will be asked to remain in the office until you urinate. In some cases your doctor may elect to insert a catheter to ensure your comfort. How long does the procedure take? The procedure usually takes about half an hour. However, your entire visit will probably take from about an hour to an hour and a half, in order for your doctor to prepare you for the procedure, perform the procedure itself, and get you prepared to go home. 5 6
5 Will I need general anesthesia? Most men need only local anesthesia that is delivered via a catheter to the targeted area. Some doctors may prescribe a mild sedative. How soon can I expect my BPH symptoms to go away? Generally you will see improvement in your symptoms in two to six weeks after the procedure and symptoms may continue to improve over two to three months. 3 Individual results vary. Will I have to spend the night in the hospital? This procedure was designed for use in an office or a hospital outpatient setting. Most men are able to go home the same day. Is the procedure safe in the office? Yes, the procedure is safe. The instruments used in the procedure contain several important safety features. For example, the instrument constantly measures temperature in the treatment area and automatically shuts off if it detects that it is getting too hot. How long will it be before I can return to my normal activities? Most TUNA Therapy patients return to their normal activities quickly after the procedure, while some patients may require a day or two. Is catheterization required after the procedure? Catheterization is required as needed, usually 0-2 days. What is the risk of incontinence? There were no reported cases of incontinence in the clinical study. Are there other side effects associated with TUNA Therapy? Possible side effects from the TUNA procedure include obstruction, bleeding, pain/discomfort, urgency, frequency and urinary tract infection. Will there be any sexual side effects? The ability to have normal and natural sexual relations is important at any age. During the clinical study, less than 2% of TUNA Therapy patients experience impotence and less than 1% of patients experience retrograde ejaculation Precision System User Guide 2.
