1 Marie Caudill Information Biography Web Bio Biographical Statement Dr. Marie Caudill received her PhD degree in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Florida in Shortly thereafter she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Nutrition and Food Science at Cal Poly Pomona University in Southern California where she served for 10 years. Dr. Caudill joined the faculty at Cornell University as an associate professor of Nutritional Sciences and Genomics in August Dr. Caudill is internationally recognized for her work on folate and choline, and the intake levels of these nutrients required to support human health. She has published over 60 papers, reviews, or chapters in this area, and is frequently an invited speaker on topics related to methyl nutrients, one-carbon metabolism and epigenetics. In 2012, Dr. Caudill will be presenting her work at the International Conference on Advances and Controversies in B-Vitamins and Choline University of Leipzig, Germany and at the FASEB Summer Conference on Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 & One Carbon Metabolism Crete, Greece. Dr. Caudill teaches the increasingly popular upper level Nutrition and Disease course (NS 4410) which focuses on disease pathology and its intersection with nutrition. Professional Current Professional Activities Editorial Boards Journal of Nutrition, 2009 to present. Frontiers in Nutrigenomics, 2011 to present. Research Current Research Activities The overall goal of the Caudill laboratory is to provide data that will scientifically inform the development of nutrient recommendations designed to optimize maternal and fetal health. We recently completed a long-term controlled feeding study involving nonpregnant, pregnant and lactating women and are now quantifying dose-response relationships for several nutrients including choline, folate, biotin, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. We are especially interested in the relationship between these nutrients and epigenomic/genomic marks of fetal derived tissues (i.e., placenta). In collaboration with the Roberson laboratory, we are investigating the effect of maternal choline supplementation on placental function using a mouse model of placental insufficiency. In a parallel study with the Brannon laboratory, we are investigating the effect of choline exposure on human trophoblast function in a cell culture system. These collaborations were established based on our preliminary data in pregnant women showing beneficial effects of maternal choline supplementation on placental markers of inflammation and angiogenesis. In collaboration with the laboratories of Stupp and Canfield, we are preparing a
3 grant that seeks to investigate the effect of maternal choline supplementation on offspring cognitive functioning, affect regulation, and response to stress during infancy and early childhood. Notably, our preliminary work showed that supplementing the maternal diet with extra choline diminished stress reactivity in the neonate through epigenetic mechnisms. The Caudill laboratory is also preparing a grant that seeks to assess the impact of maternal choline supplementation on insulin sensitivity and metabolic fitness among obese pregnant women. Stay tuned! Extension Education Education Doctor of Philosophy in Human Nutrition, Food Science and Human Nutrition, College of Agriculture, University of Florida Registered Dietitian, Dietetic Internship at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia Master of Science in Health Science, College of Health, University of North Florida Bachelor of Science in Health Science, College of Health, University of North Florida Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education, College of Education, University of North Florida. Courses Courses Taught NS Micronutrients: Function, Homeostasis and Assessment Professor Caudill participates in this team taught course managed by Charles McCormick. Specifically, she delivers lectures on the B-vitamins (folate, vitamin B-12, vitamin B-6, biotin) and choline. NS Nutrition and Disease This course combines the principles of nutrition, biochemistry, physiology, genetics, pharmacology, and pathology to understand disease risk, prevention, progression and management. The course is organized in a lecture format with opportunities for the class to engage in the discussion of original research articles on topics of high current interest in the area of nutrition and health.
