1 ANSC 324 Spring, 2007 Laboratory Exercise #3 Due Date: COMPLETE IN LAB (no point value) This laboratory exercise will emphasize ingredient and nutrient selection for computerized diet formulation. You will choose which INGREDIENTS are available for the computer to use in the formulation, and you will determine how constraints and limitations you set influence the formulation. You will also select which NUTRIENTS the computer will focus on for formulation purposes, and apply selected nutrient restrictions. Log on to your PUCC account and set up your Brill diet formulation files. You need to do the following. Your TA will guide you through the process. I. Part 1 1. Set up the customer, ration, and lot information. Use your name, select poultry for the species (code 14), and select the DeKalb strain. Call this diet a broiler starter and identify it as lot 1, ration 1. When you are done, you will want to save the diet formulation for future reference. 2. Using the ingredient codes provided in the parentheses, select ground corn (79), soybean meal 50% crude protein (216), dicalcium phosphate (407), limestone (410), salt (488), and poultry premix (720), and fat (98) as your ingredients. 3. Edit the nutrient composition of your ground corn and soybean meal to have metabolizable energy values for poultry (nutrient no. 107) of 1523 and 1150 kcal/me per pound, respectively. Be sure you save these changes. 4. Place ingredient restrictions as follows for salt and premix. Fix salt in the diet at 0.4% and the premix at 0.15% by entering these numbers as both the minimum and maximum. 5. Select the nutrient restrictions tab and place the following restrictions. Under % Target Weight, set minimum nutrient requirements for protein (23%) and minimum and maximum nutrient requirements for energy (1455 kcal ME per pound is 3200 kcal ME per kg of diet), calcium (0.9%), and available phosphorus (0.4%). Accept these constraints. 6. Formulate the diet by selecting optimize (F2). Print the report using the Reports menu. Note: When you optimize, if you get Infeasible, rather than Feasible, you have something entered something incorrectly. 7. Print the report, check your Percent A. F. against your TA s solution. If it is OK, go on to part 2.
2 II. Part 2 In this exercise, we will determine how the computer responds when we alter the ingredient choices, the nutrient compositions of specific ingredients, and the nutrient requirements that we instruct the computer to meet in our formulation. 1. Resave the diet formulated from part 1 as ration 2 (under lot 1, you will now have 2 diets, or rations). 2. Now, remove dicalcium phosphate as a selected ingredient and re-run the formulation. Note what happened. 3. Now, add meat and bone meal (123) as an ingredient option for the computer, and reformulate. What happens now? Add minimum NRC recommendations (0-3wk old bird) for lysine (nutrient 111) and methionine (nutrient 116). Re-formulate and write down the methionine and lysine contents (%) in the diet. 4. Finally, edit the nutrient composition of meat and bone meal such that the calcium and available phosphorus contents are reduced by half. NOTE: Write down what the original values are, and when you are done with this exercise, re-set them to their original values. Also, under Standard Lab Maintenance you will find Ca and P in more than one location. As a general rule, nutrients listed near the top are used in ruminat formulations. Therefore, scroll down to nutrient numbers 130 (Ca) and 132 (available P) to make your adjustments. 5. Re-formulate. What happened? 6. Re-set your values from no. 4 above. Have your TA check your and provide you with the homework assignment before you leave before you leave.

Premixes You are the head poultry nutritionist for Agri-Minerals, a company that specializes in trace mineral premixes for the livestock industry. Your responsibilities include formulating premixes to be mixed at your plant. These mineral premixes are often blended with a vitamin premix to make a base mix that is sold to your clientele for inclusion in the diets that they make. In addition, to overseeing the formulation of these base mixes, you often serve as a technical advisor to your clientele, which is a good public relations move on the part of your company. Broiler Specialties, Inc., a long standing client of Agri-minerals, has contacted your office and requested that you supply them with a base mix that will meet the vitamin and trace mineral requirements of their 0-3 wk old broilers. Use the ingredients below to formulate a base mix that includes both vitamins and trace minerals. Keep in mind, that since this is a base mix with vitamins and trace minerals mixed, you need to be concerned about the break down of vitamins. Therefore, you should add vitamins at a level of 2x NRC. The vitamin premix is supplied to your company as a premix. You will need to determine how much vitamin premix should be added to your base mix to meet the birds requirements when the premix is added to the diet at a level of 5 lb/ton. Rice hulls are available as a carrier for your base mix. Complete the attached table which will provide your mill manager with the percent inclusion of each ingredient in addition to the amount of each ingredient needed to mix a 1 ton base mix. 5 II. Broiler Starter Formulation with Brill. As a technical service, formulate a broiler starter diet (0-3 wk) for Broiler Specialties, Inc. using the premix that you formulated above at an inclusion rate of 5 lb/ton and the ingredients listed below. Also, note the particular ingredient constraints that are to be used. Set minimum nutrient requirements based on the NRC sheet for calcium, available phosphorus (nonphytate P), methionine, lysine, and tryptophan. In addition, place upper limits such that methionine and lysine do not exceed the NRC minimum recommendation by more than 5%. The energy density should be set at a minimum of 3200 kcal metabolizable energy (ME) per kg of diet. Print your formulation and double check all specifications used. Be sure you save this diet with a unique name so that you can recall it later if needed. Note: You do not need to modify the vitamin or trace mineral profile of ingredient #720. Simply use it to reserve the 5 lb/ton of space needed for this premix.
