1 3 Cosmetic s CF-61 and CF-76 Product Information Introduction Typical Applications 3M Cosmetic s CF-61 and CF-76 are unique, fast-drying solvents that can be in a variety of cosmetics and skin care formulations. Cosmetic fluids CF-61 (methoxynonafluorobutane) and CF-76 (ethoxynonafluorobutane) are clear, colorless fluids with low odor. They are fast drying cosmetic fluids with boiling points of 61 C and 76 C, respectively. Cosmetic fluids can be used to replace or in conjunction with alcohol or other fast-drying solvents, such as silicone fluids and hydrocarbon solvents. 3M Cosmetic s are environmentally favorable fluids offering a unique balance of properties. 3 3M Cosmetic s Materials Compatibility Testing of 3M Cosmetic s CF-61 and CF-76 in neat form demonstrates compatibility with a wide range of metals, plastics, and elastomers. Although CF-61 and CF-76 fluids show good short-term compatibility with fluorinated plastics and elastomers at room temperature, the fluids will absorb into these materials over longer exposure times. 4 3M Cosmetic s Regulatory Status 3M Cosmetic s CF-61 and CF-76 have been accepted for commercial use by regulatory agencies in the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Australia and Europe (under the European List of Notified New Chemical Substances). 3M cosmetic fluids have been approved under the Significant New Alternatives Policy (SNAP) of the U.S. EPA. In addition, 3M cosmetic fluids have been excluded by the U.S. EPA from the definition of a VOC on the basis that these compounds have negligible contribution to tropospheric ozone formation. Contact your local 3M representative regarding regulatory status and coding assistance for 3M cosmetic fluids. Toxicity Profile The toxicological testing completed on 3M cosmetic fluids CF-61 and CF-76 indicate that overall toxicity is low. The materials are practically non-irritating to the eyes, minimally irritating to the skin and not a mutagen or cardiac sensitizer. They are rated practically nontoxic through inhalation.
