Everyday!!! Childhood Obesity
Background /Statistics In The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), using measured heights and weights reported that an estimate of 17% of children and adolescents ages 2-18 years are obese. Among preschool aged children 2-5 year of age, obesity increased from 5 to 10.4% between and and % among 6-11 year olds. Adolescents ages obesity rates triples going from %. Of 28 focus areas for Healthy People 2010, a comprehensive set of disease prevention and health promotion for our nation, nutrition and obesity have made the list and are scheduled to make the list for the goals of Healthy People 2020.
Background Continued Low socioeconomic background, race and ethnicity are noted to put children at a greater risk for developing childhood obesity. As discussed at the World Health Organization (WHO) forum and technical meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, there is an inverse relationship between socioeconomic status and childhood obesity. This relation between income inequalities and children living in poverty increase the rate of childhood obesity. The NHANES also shows that among racial and ethnic groups of children other than white the rates of obesity are higher. Childhood obesity if not prevented or treated can lead to other morbid diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and depression
Proven ways to combat Childhood Obesity Promote healthy eating Adequate physical activity Provider education
Front Lines The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP): HEAT= Healthy Eating and Activity Together. Goal= prevention by using evidence based guidelines Let s Move program started by First Lady Michelle Obama. Goal=Decrease childhood obesity by increasing areas where kids can go to be physically active.
Objectives of Project Perform a random chart review of 50 patients to see the prevalence of obesity and to see if obesity was present and if it was diagnosed. Identify community resources that promote physical activity for children. Inquire into what other institutions are doing to assess, diagnose and treat Childhood Obesity. Create a children s portion guide toolbox.
Chart Review Random 50 Charts from multiple providers (mostly one) were reviewed to determine: What the BMI and % for age was (growth charts) What category did the child fit (Healthy/Overweight/Obese) Age Sex Provider Was there a diagnosis made?
Determining the BMI % Underweight - BMI less than the 5th percentile Healthy Weight - BMI 5th percentile up to the 85th percentile Overweight - BMI 85th to less than the 95th percentile Obese - BMI greater than or equal to the 95th percentile
Statistical Breakdown 22 out of 50=Healthy 44% 4 out of 50=Obese 8% (75% had a diagnosis and 25% did not) 24 out of 50=Overweight 48% (70.8% had a diagnosis and 29.2% did not) Median Age=9.5 Median BMI= males and 15 females
Results of Chart Review
Males
Females
Kids on the Move Research all areas that provide safe areas for kids to participate in physical activity. English and Spanish No wasted space (tips on eating and the benefits of exercise).
Other Institutions Yale Pedi Endocrinology Pedi Endocrinology in Norwalk
Children s Portion Guide Toolbox Research what other groups of people are doing to show kids portion control. Make it fun for kids. Using the food guide pyramid for kids. Make three boxes one for each pediatric clinic. Include healthy Rxs for providers to give to patients.
