New RIDA SMART APP: The simple mycotoxin analysis in your hand To reduce consumers exposure to mycotoxins to an acceptable limit, European legislation regulates the maximum permissible levels of mycotoxins in food and feed. From users point of view analytical methods are requested to be performed quickly, reliably and cost efficiently. In recent years, lateral flow testing devices (LFDs) have become increasingly more important in filling this position. The main reasons for their popularity are the very short test duration and the easy handling of the analytical method. Lateral flow devices bring together a complete test system on a membrane strip and reduce to a minimum the amount of time and effort required for testing. They are ideal for quick, time-critical quantitative analyses of single samples. 3 Background information: Food products are widely enriched and fortified with vitamins to ensure optimal vitamin supply for the population. The analysis of naturally occurring and supplemented vitamins is necessary in order to make sure that legal requirements are maintained, that the declared vitamin contents are actually contained in the relevant foods and that advertising instructions from the manufacturers are justified. Therefore, it is essential to have analytical methods to hand, which allow a fast and reliable determination of vitamins in these products. RIDASCREEN FAST Vitamin B12, Art. No. R2103 RIDA QUICK Aflatoxin RQS ECO Rapid aflatoxin lateral flow testing with aqueous extraction Organic solvents always played an important role in mycotoxin analysis. However they have a negative impact on the environment and pose a hazard for the lab technician. R-Biopharm now offers the new RIDA QUICK Aflatoxin RQS ECO (Art. No. R5206), a solution to quantitatively analyze corn samples for aflatoxin contamination by rapid lateral flow testing, completely avoiding organic solvent handling. Instead aflatoxins are extracted from the samples by using an aqueous buffer solution. The extraction buffer is included in the test kit, which saves on the costs for solvents and simplifies aflatoxin analysis: No comparable product with aqueous extraction is easier in handling. Just mix the ground sample with ready to use extraction buffer, shake, centrifuge, and run the test. No dilution steps necessary. 4 Our products New application for RIDASCREEN Nitrofuran assays A new application note for the simultaneous sample preparation and analysis of all four nitrofuran ELISA test systems (Art. No. R3703/R3711/R3713/R3715) in fish is available on request. Please contact your local distributor. New test format for Premi Test Urin The format of Premi Test Urin (Art. No. R3921) has changed from disposable ampoules to a dropping bottle, which simplifies sample preparation significantly. For the preparation of urine samples, Premi Test Urin is simply dropped into the urine sample. After mixing, the sample can be applied directly to Premi Test (Art. No. R3925/ R3900) for the screening of antibiotic residues. Premi Test Urin contains 1 dropping bottle with 15 ml of sample buffer. The number of samples which can be prepared is dependent on the volume of the samples. Exemplarily, 30 samples with a volume of 30 ml each. The new Premi Test Urin (Art. No. R3921) is available since February 2016 and replaces the former product (Art. No. R3920). New Compact Dry application for cosmetics procedure document available now! Since the product launch of the Compact Dry line (nutrient systems in test plate format) in 2013, the manuals have indicated that the detection of microorganisms in cosmetics is possible as well. Compact Dry for the microbiological analysis of cosmetics In the meantime, we have received numerous inquiries asking whether there are special regulations when preparing cosmetic samples for application on the Compact Dry plates (such as in compliance with Microbiological Quality Management (MQM) of cosmetic products ), or whether it is possible to apply the sample preparation provided in the manuals for preparing food 1:1 to cosmetics. page 4

5 Due to the fat content and the solid consistency of most cosmetics, the instructions for food samples cannot be followed for the preparation of cosmetic samples. Therefore, R-Biopharm developed and tested a special application method for various cosmetics that complies extensively with the MQM regulations. SureFood PCR products from our partner CONGEN Biotechnologie GmbH, Berlin New GMO kits for soya available Genetically modified plants (GMO plants) are mainly soya, maize, canola and cotton (not designated for human consumption). GMO events are known for further plant species, these however only play a minor role in agriculture and trade worldwide. The detection of presence or absence of GMO plants is performed by screening of promotor/terminator sequences such as 35S, FMV, NOS and others which are not present in natural plants. However new GMO events (e. g. soya) have been introduced in to the market which do not contain such DNA sequences and might not be detected by a screening. 6 R-Biopharm AG Information from R-Biopharm Rhône, Scotland Aflatoxin analysis just keeps getting easier For laboratories carrying out routine aflatoxin analysis and running large numbers of samples every day, it makes good sense to investigate the possibility of automation. A ground-breaking development has been reported by Rhemrev et al., in the November/December 2015 issue of Journal of AOAC International. Novel re-usable immunoaffinity cartridges containing monoclonal antibodies to aflatoxins coupled to a pressure resistant polymer (IMMUNOPREP ONLINE AFLATOXIN, RBRP900) have enabled a fully automated commercial aflatoxin analysis system to be validated. The cartridge is used in conjunction with a handling system inline to LC with fluorescence detection (RIDA CREST online sample preparation system R-Biopharm AG, Darmstadt, Germany) and has been validated in two independent laboratories for the routine monitoring of aflatoxin in peanuts, maize, paprika, nutmeg and dried figs. Recoveries exceeded 80 % for both aflatoxin B1 and total aflatoxins, and repeatability ranged from 2.1 to 9.6 % for aflatoxin B1 for six levels spanning EU regulatory limits in the five matrixes. IMMUNOPREP ONLINE Aflatoxin, Art. No. RBRP900 A consistent high performance in a 10 min run-time was demonstrated with the IAC being used up to 15 times without any reduction in recovery. The performance of each cartridge is apparent as the standard is applied to each cartridge, and calibration in this way allows for corrected recovery to be automatically calculated. For the future other IMMUNOPREP ONLINE cartridges can be anticipated to extend the range of automation of mycotoxin analysis and to make life even easier for the analyst. page 6

7 Citrinin a mycotoxin of growing interest Citrinin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin produced by several species of fungi. It can co-occur with other mycotoxins and is found in grain, beans, fruit, herbs and spices. EFSA gave an Opinion on citrinin in 2012, but expressed a need for more occurrence data for food and feed to refine its risk assessment. In May 2015 EFSA published a call for proposals to conduct extensive survey work for citrinin*: From this work data should become available for citrinin levels in a total of over 1000 samples of grain, grain-based products and other foods including beans, fruit and vegetable juices, herbs, spices and olives. With this growing interest in citrinin, the introduction of R-Biopharm EASI-EXTRACT CITRININ immunoaffinity column is timely and provides efficient clean-up prior to HPLC with fluorescence detection. The fungus Monascus purpureus is used to ferment red rice to produce a food supplement which is of growing interest in its health benefits, but can be contaminated with citrinin. Commission Regulation (EU) No 212/2014 sets a maximum level of 2000 μg/kg for citrinin in food supplements based on rice fermented with red yeast Monascus purpureus and this limit will be reviewed in January Routine monitoring in these health food products is therefore essential.
