Secretary Dr Mahenderan Appukutty Council Members: Assoc Prof Dr Tony Ng Kock Wai, AMN, FNSM Dr Mohd Nasir Mohd Taib FNSM Assoc Prof Datin Dr Safiah Mohd Yusof, FNSM Ms Tan Sue Yee Affiliations Confederation of Scientific and Technological Associations of Malaysia Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies NSM COUNCIL REPORT 2011 The Nutrition Society of Malaysia continued to be actively implementing activities targeted at promoting nutrition science as well as healthy nutrition for the community in The Society expresses its sincere gratitude to various partners in enabling these activities to be successfully implemented, especially the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development especially the National Population and Family Development Board and the Ministry of Education, and fellow professional bodies such as Malaysian Association for the Study of Obesity (MASO), Malaysian Pediatric Association (MPA), Malaysian Dietitians Association (MDA), and the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia, as well as the Society s partners from the private sector through several programmes. Besides organizing the 26th Scientific Meeting and AGM held in Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel in March 2011, NSM also actively pursued the activities of Nutrition Month Malaysia (NMM), which included the publication of the official NMM 2011 Recipe book Wholesome Meals practical recipes for your growing child.the launching of NMM was held on the 23 April 2011 in Mid Valley Megamall. A series of educational articles to specific focused topics on young children were published in several newspapers and magazines, in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Chinese. NSM also launched a new recipe book, titled Nutritionists Choice Cookbook -Healthy recipes for your little ones This recipe book is a continuation of Resipi Sihat Pilihan Bijak volumes I and 2. NSM also launched TryMasak Sihat, a mobile phone application to watch a 3-5 minute cooking videos for Resipi Sihat meals. The initiatives were launched by Dr Chong Yoon Hin, Founding President of the NSM during the 26 th scientific meeting in March The publication of the Malaysian Journal of Nutrition was on schedule with three issues of Volume 17 (I,II &III) being published. Secretary Tel: Fax: secretary@nutriweb.org.my Council members also served as members in various technical committees of the Ministry of Health Malaysia, including the NCCFN, Food Regulations Committee, TWG on Dietary Guidelines, TWG on Health Promotion, Codex Sub-Committees, and School Canteen Project has been another fruitful year for the Society, with many projects either taking shape or being completed. Numerous other projects are already being planned for implementation in A summary of these activities are given in Tables 1 and 2 at the end of this report.

2 1. 26th NSM SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE, MARCH 2011 The NSM annual scientific conference has been progressing over the years and the number of participants keeps increasing. This year the number of participants was around 400 participants and the number of scientific posters presented was 114 whereby it covers a wide variety of research topics in nutritional sciences. There were 24 oral presentations from five symposia, several of which were related to the theme of the conference: Healthy children, healthier nationstart young. Symposium I and 2 had 9 presentations exploring children health and nutrition topics of the conference theme ranging from maternal-infant and breastfeeding to adolescents. In 2011, the NSM conference had two international food industry speakers (USA & Switzerland) in the symposium on promoting nutrition, health and wellness. The last symposium was a Nutrition Potpourri, mainly devoted to discussing variety of issues on nutrition and health, presented by members of the Society. The Young Investigator s Symposium was retained as it has been found to be a good training platform for young nutritionists to make scientific presentations. Dr Chong Yoon Hin, Founding President of the NSM declared open the Scientific Conference. Also continuing with our efforts to provide incentives to young nutrition scientists, the usual NSM Prizes were given out. Prizes were given for best undergraduates in the oral and poster presentations. The winners for the oral presentations at the Young Investigators Symposium were FIRST PRIZE (RM300 CASH + CERTIFICATE) Noor Hasni Ismail Are dietary patterns related to acne vulgaris occurence? Supervisor: Dr Yasmin Ooi Beng Houi School of Food Science and Nutrition, Universiti Malaysia Sabah 1.3 NSM Publication Prize 2011 The NSM with financial support from a Corporate Member of the Society have continued the publication prize for academic members of the Society. The NSM Publication Prize is mainly for promoting local research in nutritional sciences. This prize is for publications in the field of infant and childhood nutrition. Dutch Lady Industries Bhd funded these prizes for There shall be a maximum of 3 awards each year, each to carry a cash prize of RM 2000 and a certificate by the NSM. For the year 2011, the publication selection committee awarded only one prize. The winner is: Pg 5 of 21

6 Prof Dr Khor Geok Lin, Dept of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Medicine and Health, International Medical University. The publication title: High prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency and its association with BMI for age among primary school children in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. (BMC Public Health 11: ) NSM Council is pleased to thank Prof Khor Geok Lin for donating the prize money to NSM for its education fund. NSM also offered new Pubication Prize focussing on whole grain sponsored by Kraft Foods. There was no appicant for this year. 26th NSM ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING, 25MARCH 2011 The 26th AGM of the Society was held on Friday, 25 March 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Mutiara Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. A total of 41 members attended the 26th AGM. The AGM commenced with a welcome and opening address by NSM President, Dr Tee E Siong. He conveyed his appreciation to members for their presence. Thereafter, Prof Dr Norimah A. Karim, the Honorary Secretary, brought members through the minutes of the 25th AGM, followed by the Council Report for Year Subsequently, the Honorary Treasurer, Assoc Prof Dr Zaitun Yassin presented the Treasurer s Report for Year Full details of the discussions in the AGM are given in the minutes of that meeting. 2. NSM COUNCIL MEETINGS The 13 th NSM Council held ten meetings from May 2011 till March 2012 Table 3 shows the attendance list of all Council members at the meetings. In addition to contributions by members of NSM, the journal also has articles from international nutritionists. Now, MJN has been indexed into major databases, including the Elsevier's databases of the Scopus, EBiology and ECare, CABI Global Health database,, the WHO West Pacific Region Index Medicus (WPRIM) database, and the US National Library of Medicine MEDLine. All MJN issues can also be viewed as pdf files on the NSM website: free of charge. The Council congratulates Prof Khor Geok Lin, the Editor of MJN and the editorial board for doing a great job and bringing MJN to greater heights. Prof Khor was re-appointed as Editor of MJN for another 5-year period, from The Berita NSM 2010/2011 issue was published in mid The issue contains news and information on all NSM activities carried out from mid-2010 to mid The Berita NSM is managed by a small Publication Committee chaired by, and comprising of Prof Dr Norimah A.Karim and Dr Mahenderan Appukutty. Members are encouraged to submit articles for Berita NSM.The Berita NSM has been uploaded onto the website. Members should take note that due to high mailing cost and inability to have accurate mailing address of many members, MJN and Berita NSM are no longer posted to individual members. They are distributed through council members to their respective organisations, as well as through other group contacts. The sale of Resipi Sihat, Pilihan Bijak Volumes 1 and 2 are continuing though members as well as during the nutrition roadshows. The sale of these books has been fair. The sale of the newly launched Nutritionists Choice Cookbook has been encouraging (Table 5). Members conducting some events such as exhibitions and talks are urged to help promote these books. They can contact the President to obtain copies at reduced prices for this purpose. Pg 8 of 21

This is with the intention of providing wider dissemination of these two publications. A total of 2000 copies of RNI and 3000 copies of MDG have been re-printed. These books are now being sold through Council Members who are also lecturers in their respective universities. Members who need these books can contact the President or the Hon. Secretary. 5. NUTRIWEB ( NSM s official website, Nutriweb, is still being maintained and served as a useful source of information to the public. The President responded to several questions on nutrition which have been received through the website. Publications of the NSM, eg W@H manual on women, variety of educational leaflets and articles and all Nutrition Month Malaysia publications, were all mounted on nutriweb for easy access to all Malaysians. The website was updated and efforts to further improve accessibility will be undertaken. To date, all issues of the Malaysian Journal of Nutrition has been uploaded onto the website. All articles are in pdf format. The MJN can be accessed via the following link: 6. NSM EDUCATION FUND In the Year 2011, Council decided to support Asian Congress of Nutrition (ACN) 2011 in a big way as it is held under the auspices of the Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS) and it is held just south of the border. NSM therefore subsidized a large number of members to attend and present at Asian Congress of Nutrition, Singapore. The recipients of the subsidized grant are listed in Table 6. A total of RM 33, was subsidized for 25 NSM members. This first volume focuses on infancy to toddlerhood and preschool years. This cookbook has been published to guide parents to provide adequately nutritious meals for their young children. This cookbook will also be useful for child carers in preschool, grandparents, relatives or house helpers who take care of children at home. The cookbook was launched at the 26 th NSM Conference in March 2011.by Dr Chong Yoon Hin. Towards the beginning of 2012, work on publishing volume 2 of Nutritionists Choice Cookbook commenced. There will be over 60 recipes and practical nutrition tips for all members of the family. As in the first volume, several corporate organisations shall be approached to sponsor the publication of this book. 8. NUTRISTUDY NSM collaborated with Dutch Lady Sdn Bhd to carry out a research project on the nutritional status, feeding practices and cognitive performance of preschool children in the semi urban areas in the Malaysian Peninsular. The research was carried out in 2009 and was completed in The final report has been submitted to Dutch Lady. An article titled Child feeding practices, food habits, anthropometric indicators and cognitive performance among preschoolers in Peninsular Malaysia; Authors Mohd Nasir et al has been accepted for publication in Appetite 58 (2012): Results from the study have also been presented orally or as posters in several conferences nationally and internationally. 9. HEALTHY KIDS PROGRAM (HKP) NSM collaborated with Nestle to implement the HKP in Malaysia, which was launched on 7 th August HKP is a global programme by Nestle as part of the company s initiative to raise awareness about nutrition, health and wellness among school-age children. HKP in Malaysia consist of an awareness campaign and a research component. The main tool in the awareness component is a dedicated website ( which is designed in a fun and friendly manner for both children and parents. The research is a 3-year longitudinal intervention, carried out to develop and determine the effectiveness of appropriate educational materials to facilitate the teaching of nutrition to primary school children. It is envisaged that at the end of the project, a set of educational modules can be developed and passed on to the Ministry of Education for the teaching of nutrition to primary school children. WHOLE GRAIN IN HUMAN NURITION- A SCIENTIFIC UPDATE NSM collaborated with International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) to organize a scientific seminar on Whole grains in human nutrition on 22 April 2011 in Mutiara Crowne Plaza Hotel. The seminar provided a platform for stakeholders to understand the current status of whole grain consumption, dietary guidelines and regulations in the country. The seminar also discussed efforts for all stakeholders to promote greater consumption of whole grain foods. A total of 100 participants attended the seminar ND REGIONAL CONFERENCE, NUTRITION IN OBSTETRIC AND GYNAECOLOGY NSM collaborated with Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia to organize the above conference on the 4-6 March 2011 at Le Meridien Hotel. The conference explored the latest knowledge on many pertinent issues, which are current, and essential to obstetricians and gynaecologists, nutritionists, dietitians, midwives and staff nurses. Dr Nasir Mohd Taib represented NSM on the Organising Committee for this conference. Prof Dr Mohd Ismail Noor and Prof Dr Norimah A.Karim were among speakers for the conference. 12. NUTRITION MONTH MALAYSIA 2011 The Nutrition Month Malaysia (NMM) programme is a collaborative effort between fellow professional bodies, namely, NSM, MDA, and MASO with the support of Family Health Development Division of the Ministry of Health. It was started in 2002, and was launched in conjunction with the launch of Resipi Sihat, Pilihan Bijak, Volume 2. The objective of the programme was to promote greater awareness and practice of healthy eating, in line with the Government s efforts to build healthy families as the cornerstone for a healthy nation. It is meant as an extension of the Ministry of Health s Healthy Lifestyle Campaign. The NMM has been implemented by a National Steering Committee, which comprised representatives from the respective professional bodies and the secretariat has been managed by VersaComm Sdn Bhd. The Steering Committee was chaired by, President of NSM. For NMM 2011, the focus was on preschool and primary school children. Highlights of activities for 2011 NMM 2011 was launched during a 2-day carnival on the April 2011 in Mid Valley Megamall. Publication of Official NMM 2011 Recipe Book Wholesome meals containing 23 healthy home cooked recipes suitable for school going children as well as meal planning tips. Series of educational articles which focused on topics on the holistic approach to the nutritional well being of young children in newspapers and magazines, in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Chinese: Scrap book competition among lower and upper primary school children Nutrifun school roadshows in 70 selected primary schools in Klang Valley and other states, and Nutrition Interactive Club activities in 2 selected schools Kindergarten roadshows in 75 centres in Klang Valley Seminar for kindergarten teachers in Klang Valley on 18 June Pg 11 of 21

12 Closing ceremony and prize giving of scrap book competition on 15 October Radio and television interviews on theme of Nutrition Month 2011 Community activities in all States by State Health Departments Nutrition awareness exhibitions and activities by other agencies Preparations for NMM 2012, the 10th Anniversary Towards the middle of the year, the first meeting of the Steering Committee (SC) for NMM was called to discuss activities for As has been the practice in past years, Versacomm Sdn Bhd, communications company working with NSM for the past 10 years on NMM was again invited to serve as Secretariat and help organise NMM A marketing kit was prepared and invitations to sponsor NMM 2012, with the theme: Let s Create Healthier Families, were sent out to several companies who have been supporting NSM in its activities in the past. Towards the end of 2011, significant progress has been made in preparing for NMM 2012, which shall be launched on 14 April 2012,. Being the 10 th anniversary of NMM, special activities are being planned for 2012 activities. In Conjunction with the launch in April, a video documenting the success of the programme in the past 10 years shall be prepared. The educational component of the family carnival shall be expanded to a Nutri-Fun land, with activities for parents and children, touching on various aspects of basic nutrition and food choice. Nutri Fun roadshows to schools and kindergartens shall continue as we feel these are important outreach activities. A substantial booklet to answer issues on food and nutrition shall be published. Members are urged to help promote NMM in their own work place, amongst their families and friends and in all ways. 13. COMMUNITY NUTRITION SERVICE PROJECTS INVOLVING THE NSM The Nutrition Society of Malaysia carried out a number of nutrition promotion programmes for the community. Many of these were in collaboration with other professional societies, as well as with several corporate organisations. a. Positive Parenting Programme Prof Dr Norimah A. Karim, the Hon Secretary of NSM, represents the Society in this programme led by the Malaysian Pediatrics Association. NSM continue to support the event. Positive Parenting Management Committee (PPMC) has successfully completed Positive Parenting with the key thrust for 2011 were establishment of sub-programmes, re-package positive parenting guide, maintain media presence and continue conducting seminars. Positive Parenting also celebrated their 10 th year anniversary and launched a Guide book for parents: From preconception to 2 years. The launch was officiated by Datin Paduka Seri Rosmah Mansor at Sunway Pyramid Mall. Dr Tee and Dr Zawiah represented NSM in the expert panel committee of the Guide Book. As in previous year, this year PP published four volumes of PP magazines. Pg 12 of 21

TryMasak Sihat NSM collaborated with Geoflex Sdn Bhd, a new media application and content development company to launch TryMasak ( With the TryMasak application, users can watch the 3-5 minute cooking videos for the Resipi Sihat meal. The application was launched at the 26 th NSM conference in March c. Healthy Mealtime Magic NSM and Philips AVENT collaborated to produce a fun booklet for parents with children aged 6 to 36 months. Using cartoon animals, story telling and games, this booklet takes a fun approach in helping parents make mealtimes magical and enjoyable for children. The book offers nutrition facts, creative recipes, tips for selecting an appropriate toddler feeding range as well as stories to nourish children while whetting the appetite. d. Mother s Smart choice NSM collaborated with Obstetrical & Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM), Malaysian Paediatric Association (MPA) and National Population & Family Development Board (LPPKN), supported by Philips AVENT to embark on a long-term programme to promote appropriate infant and young child feeding. In the first year of implementation in 2011, the focus is on promoting breast feeding. In subsequent years, the programme shall be extended to promoting appropriate eating amongst toddlers. In line with the focus for this year, an educational booklet entitled Breastfeed with Confidence: Practical Tips for the Modern Mother was published. The main objective of the guidebook is to promote breastfeeding among modern mothers and to provide them with practical tips about breastfeeding. The programme was launched by Tan Sri Dato Hjh. Napsiah Omar, Chairperson of LPPKN on 22 November 2011, and was supported by local celebrity mums Amber Chia, Shahlin Zulkifli, Sazzy Falak and Aishah Sinclair. A series of talks about breastfeeding is currently given to nurses in participating hospitals to promote the educational guidebook. e. MI-Care Another programme focused on maternal wellness and infant care was initiated in the year. Called MI-Care, the programme is a collaborative effort between four professional organisations, namely Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Malaysia (OGSM), Malaysian Paediatrics Association (MPA), National Midwives Society of Malaysia and NSM. The target audience for MI-Care programme is the nurses, nursing aides and midwives from both the private and government O&G clinics, nationwide. The main objective of the programme is to empower these target groups with the relevant knowledge on all aspects of pregnancy and infant care so that they are better equipped to carry out their duties. The programme was launched on 11 February 2012, by Dato Aminah Abdul Rahman, Director- General, the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN). A number of workshops are now being conducted in different hospitals throughout the country. Each training workshop encompasses 9 key topics in the area of maternal wellness and infant care. NSM is responsible for giving the talks on nutrition in pregnancy, nutrition during lactation and complementary feeding. f. Child nutrition project In collaboration with Pfizer Nutrition, NSM conducted a study to determine the nutritional status and food preference of toddlers and preschoolers in selected kindergartens and childcare centers in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Close to 2000 toddlers and preschool children were Pg 13 of 21

14 determined for their weight and height status. The preschool children were also studied for their food preferences. The results are being analysed and report prepared. g. Nutrition during pregnancy and lactation NSM collaborated with Pfizer Nutrition in publishing a booklet on Healthy Eating during Pregnancy and Lactation. It provides simple messages to the public focusing on how to meet the increased nutritional needs during these vital periods. h. Whole grains nutrition Wholegrain cereals have been recognized to have higher nutritional value compared with the refined products. The Malaysian Dietary Guidelines 2010 have also highlighted the goodness of whole grains and recommended consumption of more wholegrain products. In support of these recommendations, NSM collaborated with Nestle Breastfast Cereals in publishing a booklet entitled Wonders of Whole Grains towards the end of the year. The main aim of the booklet is to provide consumers with more information on whole grains and provide tips on increasing its consumption. Several community promotion activities shall be carried out next year to further disseminate these messages on whole grains. i. Coffee talk NSM collaborated with Nestle in publishing a series of articles on the understanding of science of coffee. A series of four articles were completed in Engliash Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese and published in the newspaper. 14. COLLABORATIONS WITH THE MINISTRIES AND OTHER ORGANISATIONS a. MOH TWG Dietary Guidelines for children and adolescents NSM council members have been actively involved in the MOH TWG on Dietary Guidelines for children and adolescents. Prof. Ismail chairs this TWG and NSM is represented by Dr Tee and Ms Fatimah Sulong. A set of draft 16 prime messages has been agreed upon by the TWG. Members of the TWG have been assigned specific messages to prepare supporting information. Several meetings were held over the year to discuss and fine tune the messages and the write up of the Dietary Guideline. A consensus meeting is scheduled in April Besides Prof. Ismail and Dr Tee s involvement in this committee, other Council Members involved were, Dr Mohd Nasir, Prof Dr Norimah and Dr Mahenderan. b. Allied Health Profession (AHP) Bill 200 Discussions on the Allied Health Profession (AHP) Bill continued in the year. Dr Mahenderan Appukutty represents NSM in the discussions related to drafting of the Bill and the associated Regulations. A several meetings and workshops was organized by Amalan Perubatan, Nutrition Division and also Allied Health Division of MOH to draft the regulation for all the profession. In addition, the committee also prepares documentation for Annual Practice Certificate, disciplinary matters and Continuous Professional Developments (CPD) matters. A Technical Working Group on Nutrition under the AHP has been established, chaired by Ms Rokiah Don, the Director of Nutrition Division of MOH. There are 11 members in this WG and Dr Tee, President of NSM, represents NSM at this WG. The main terms of reference is to assist in the registration and implementation of the AHP regulations that will be gazette when the Act is passed in Parliament. The WG discussed the definition of Nutritionists and the Code of Professional Conduct and Code of Ethics for this profession. Pg 14 of 21

Ministry of Health Subcommittes NSM has been a member of the National Coordinating on Food and Nutrition (NCCFN) since its inception and has been playing an active role in the development of various policies and national action plan. Dr Tee represents NSM in its annual meeting, chaired by the Deputy Director of Health (Public Health). The NCCFN oversees the implementation of various activities and programmes identified in the NPAN. Prof Dr Norimah A.Karim represents NSM in the Technical Advisory Committee on Food Regulations of the MOH. This Committee, chaired by the Senior Director of the Food Safety and Quality Division of MOH considers recommendations from the various Expert Groups of the MOH and approves regulations based on these recommendations. Dr Tee chairs the Expert Group on Nutrition, Health Claims and Advertisement as adviser to the MOH. Prof Dr Amin Ismail continues to represent NSM in the Codex National Sub-Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses. This sub-committee discusses agenda items and prepares national position papers for meetings of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses. Dr Tee chairs this sub-committee as adviser to the MOH. Dr Tee represented NSM in the Food Safety and Nutrition Council meeting, held on 8 December. This is a yearly meeting Chaired by the Minister of Health. Two proposals were made to the Council for support, namely a framework the reduction and control of antimicrobial resistance and a proposal to establish a policy on advertising of foods and drinks to children. There were several other presentations for information of Council, including a paper by MASO on Prevention of Obesity in Malaysia and a presentation by FMM on Prevention and Control of NCDs. Dr Hazizi represents NSM in the Technical Working Group on Nutrition Promotion. This Committee is chaired by Pn Zalma Abd Razak, MOH. The TWG group is one of the working groups under the main body of National Coordinating Committee on Food and Nutrition (NCCFN). The main aim of this TWG is to integrate and work collectively with government sectors, NGOs and private in promoting healthy eating among public. d. Sarawak Heart Foundation workshop on Obesity Prevention NSM and MASO were requested by Sarawak Heart Foundation (SHF) to assist them in organizing an obesity prevention workshop. Dr Tee, Prof Norimah and Dr Zaitun represented NSM in the organizing Committee for the Workshop. The workshop, carried out in Kuching, November, was attended by one hundred participants from various organisations and individuals who are anticipated to participate in implementing the identified intervention programmes and activities. These included principals and senior teachers from various kindergartens and schools in Kuching; nutritionists, dietitians, health education officers, doctors, nurses; non-governmental organisations, and other relevant stakeholders that are involved in promoting healthy eating and active living. A wide ranging spectrum of recommendations were made at the end of the workshop, targeted at different settings: kindergartens and primary schools; secondary schools; community; and workplace. NSM and MASO are currently assisting SHF in implementing the recommended activities. Pg 15 of 21

16 15. OTHER COLLABORATIONS INVOLVING THE NSM NSM Direct Access Affinity Programme The NSM Direct Access Affinity programme continued into its eleventh year. Due to the small number of NSM members who applied for credit card under this programme, the commission received by the Society in 2011 amounted to RM The Council would like to encourage more NSM members to apply for their credit card under this affinity programme. Members should take advantage of this programme as there is no annual fee for the credit card provided, and other bank facilities are available at preferential rates to NSM members. Members who wish to apply for credit card under the affinity programme may apply to Direct Access directly using the application forms designed for the purpose. 16. NSM OFFICE The NSM office space at Lot B4/14C, Petaling Utama, Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur is now been used by the Council to hold its monthly meetings, the Steering Committee of NMM 2011 to hold its monthly meeting and several other NSM- industry collaborations expert panel meetings. All NSM publications (except Resipi Sihat), old files and all other documents are also kept in this office. The office has repaired and upgraded the office and toilet. 17. AFFILIATIONS IN YEAR 2011 NSM affiliated with Majlis Cegah Obesiti Malaysia (MCOM) in NSM is still actively affiliated with two international bodies and one national body, namely the Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS), International Union of Nutritional Sciences (IUNS), and the Confederation of Scientific and Technological Associations in Malaysia (COSTAM). A. Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS) The Singapore Nutrition and Dietetics Association (SNDA) successfully hosted the 11 th Asian Congress of Nutrition in July This 4-yearly congress is held under the auspices of the Federation of Asian Nutrition Societies (FANS). The theme of the 11 CAN was Nutritional Well- Being for a Progressive Asia Challenges and Opportunities. Some 60 Malaysians attended the Congress, with strong support by the NSM. As mentioned earlier in this report, NSM provided sponsorship to 25 members to participate in this congress. Many members presented in oral and poster sessions or served as chairs of sessions. The FANS General Assembly was held in Singapore on 13 July 2011, in conjunction with the 11th ACN. A main item discussed during the Assembly was the application of Australia to be a member of FANS. The matter has not been resolved and will be further deliberated in the next FANS General Assembly. The Japanese Society of Nutrition and Food Science briefed the Assembly of the preparations being made for the next 12th ACN to be held in Yokohama in Prof Mohd Ismail Noor attended the General Assembly as member of the Executive Council of FANS, whereas Dr Tee and Prof Norimah represented NSM in the meeting. Prof Ismail also attended the meeting of the Executive Council held on 12 July. Pg 16 of 21
