Do Sports Drinks Really Help? By: Jordan Lacey and Griffen Cartwright PHEOCS Investigation
My friend and I are doing a project investigating if sport drinks really help you after, before, or during. We are doing a series of test to see if it does and what it does and with different drinks? PHEOCS Background Information
What do electrolytes do for your body? What is a electrolyte? What is the purpose of drinking a sports drink? What does it supposedly do for you? According to nutritionists how long does your workout have to last in order to get the benefits from drinking a sports drink? There are 3 added things you get when you drink a sports drink? What are they? Is coconut water a good thing to drink after exercise? Describe what happens if you drink coconut water after exercising. How many teaspoons of sugar are in a typical sports drink? How many teaspoons of sugar are in Gatorade G Orange? PHEOCS Background Minimize things like muscle cramps that are associated with slat imbalance. A liquid or gel that contains ions and can be decomposed by electrolysis. It s to have a fruity taste drink. To replenish the muscles and make your body work harder. Approximately 90 minutes for it to work. Hydration, Fuel, Electrolytes and Minerals are the thing that replenish your body. Coconut water seems like an all-natural miracle fluid to replenish your body after a workout. 3-5 teaspoons of sugar is a typical sport drink. 13 teaspoons of sugar in a Gatorade G Orange. Information-
What is the purpose of drinking a sports drink? What does it supposedly do for you? This is a great question. Sports drinks contain water, sugar, and salt. The water is the most important! It prevents dehydration. Dehydration (losing water through sweat) can makes it harder to pump blood to your muscles! The sugar gives you extra energy in the form of glucose. The glucose helps the brain and nerves the most. The salt is made up of special molecules called ions. When ions are in water they are called electrolytes. One of the electrolytes is sodium which we get from table salt (NaCl). The other one is potassium which is found in bananas. These electrolytes are very important for our nerves and muscles. Sometimes but not always people get muscle cramps when they don t have enough electrolytes. In severe cases, people can not move their bodies in a normal way because there nerves don t work because of a lack of electrolytes. Even though electrolytes are put in sports drinks, it is very rare that they are actually needed. PHEOCS Background Information
We predict the higher the cost of sport drinks the more electrolytes it will have. Since milk is good for your body we tested them for electrolytes. PHEOCS Hypothesis
MATERIALS MATERIALS Water Lab Quest Electrolyte measurer 100ml tubes Coconut Water Chocolate milk Gatorade PHEOCS Designing experiment
a) Get 100ml tube b) Fill each tube with the drink (100ml) c) Turn on lab quest d) Set for 360 seconds e) Get electrolyte measurer f) Start lab quest g) Stir 3 times then let it rest for 30 seconds h) Pull it out after 30 seconds i) Rinse cup and measurer j) The use distilled water on them k) Fill the next tube and repeat PHEOCS Designing experiment
We are testing the electrolytes in chocolate milk This is all the drinks we tested PHEOCS Designing experiment

Conductivity of liquids for comparison of electrolytes (100ml) PHEOCS Observations
Coconut water has the most electrolytes for you but a high cost and doesn t taste well. Chocolate milk is better than white milk even though you are adding chocolate to the milk, chocolate milk is also the second most electrolytes in it. PHEOCS Conclusions
Once you swirled the stick it spiked on the graph. PHEOCS Observations
