Consumed since centuries by Guarani Indians, the stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni or Stevia is very much appreciated for its intense sweetened taste of its leaves. Its production has been developed in the early eighties in China in order to supply the Japanese market. The Stevia production fields are located on both sides of the equator, in Africa (Kenya), in South America (Paraguay and Brazil) and in the South East of Asia (Indonesia and Thailand). The Stevia plant Stevia is a plant that reaches cm, sometimes up to 1 meter tall and blooms in August-September. It thrives in full sun in relatively poor soils, but fears the drought, as the roots are growing near the surface. The leaves contain 11 sweetening molecules of stevia sweeteners, including Rebaudioside, A which presents the highest content and the best sensory profile. 1 hectare of crop stevia plant now gives 4 tons of leaves that give themselves 100Kg of Rebaudioside A. The regulations will enter in force and are directly applicable in the European Union countries on the twenty-first day following the date of publication in the Official Journal of the European Union, allowing the sale of products formulated with Stevia extracts from December 3rd, Extract from the order of August 26th, 2009 on the use of Rebaudioside A: France allows the marketing of a new zero-calorie sweetener, Rebaudioside A (plant extract of stevia Rebaudiana). The Ministry of Economy, Industry and Employment, has authorized the use and marketing of Rebaudioside A (Reb A) at 97% minimum purity, on a list of food products sold in France. New order dated September 6 th, 2011, amending the order of August 26 th, 2009 amended relating to the use of Rebaudioside A (Stevia Rebaudiana extract) as a food additive: The authorization of Rebaudioside A 97% in France is extended until publication date of the European approval publication. Compared to the previous order, certain applications and conditions of use have been changed. July 4 th, 2011: Decision of the European Commission for the use of high purity stevia extracts: The Standing Committee of the European Union in charge of the Food Chain and Animal Health met on July 4th, 2011 and voted approval and the use of high purity stevia extracts as a food additive within the European Union. A review of the regulations proposed by the European Parliament should be the next step in the regulatory process related to the use of high purity Stevia extracts. If these next steps are successful, it is likely that the high purity stevia extracts would be permitted to be used as an additive in the European Union in November This is the first country in the European Union to allow this sweetener. This decision is in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1333/2008, which allows a member to authorize the use of an ingredient which does not present a danger to the health of consumers for a period of two years awaiting the European approval, which for Reb A is expected in This authorization allows the industrial sector of the food and beverages products to include in their products, Reb A, the first sweetener of natural origin, calorie-free. This order was amended in January 2010, adding an authorization in table sweeteners. To find the text of the European Commission on line: JOCE_STG.pdf Or on demand. Press Kit - p.15
