3 Biomass composition and lodging Literature review Wheat straw biomass consists mainly of lignocellulosic compounds (Harper and Linch 1981, Collins et al. 2014) Lignin Ma (2009), Knapp gene et TaCM al. (1987) (involved concluded in lignin that biosynthesis) is associated arrangement with stem strength and inter-relationships and lodging index of the lignin and structural carbohydrates in Peng et al., wheat (2014), cell growth walls may regulators be more alter important lignin accumulation and the strength than of their basal simple internodes concentrations Wiersma et al. (2011) found a positive association between lodging resistance and lignin Cellulose Wang et al. (2012) proposed that cellulose plays a more important role in the ability of wheat stems to resist lodging
4 Objective The main goal was to investigate the contributions of structural biomass components (lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose) and WSC to stem strength.
5 Materials and Methods Field experiments established during the field seasons , and Ten cultivars from the CIMCOG panel WSC content (dry weight basis) CIMMYT s Maize Nutrition Quality and Plant Tissue Analysis Laboratory Anthrone method (Galicia et al., 2008) Lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose content (dry weight basis) Bioenergy and Brewing Science Building laboratories of the University of Nottingham (Sutton Bonington, UK). Lignin, Acetyl Bromide Spectrophotometric Method (Fukushima and Hatfield, 2001) Cellulose and hemicellulose fractions were estimated according to the method described by Fang et al. (1999)..

12 Conclusions This study illustrated that wheat genotypes with a range of stem strength dimensions differed in biomass composition (lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose and WSC) within and across environments. However, a comparison of low, intermediate and high stem strength genotypes indicated similar concentrations of biomass components Lignin and cellulose concentrations were affected by the environment. Variation on the stem strength of wheat will depend on the biomass composition and interaction of its components
