Idiolectics Finding Therapeutic Metaphors, Salutary Imageries and Visualizations through the Individual Idiolect An approach especially suitable in the first phase of Positive Psychotherapy Peter Winkler Psychologist Psychotherapist Winkler - Idiolektik - Die Lehre von der Eigensprache 1

Getting a Chance to speak? Doctor, I thought about the meaning of this ache and maybe Could you please stay silent for a moment, I have to do some medical examinations! 2

Personal Meaning of Speech as a Clue to the Personality of the Client What A tells about B, tells more about A than about B 3

Idiolect: (Individual) Meaning of Words Infront of a house there s a tree 4

Idiolect: A Key to Understanding Developed by the American Psychotherapist A.D. Jonas The individual speech of every human being is unique like it s fingerprints Via keywords and nonverbal und paraverbal signals every person expresses her/his own idiolect An early form of this idiolectic communication is the instinctive chit chat The idiolect expresses an astonishing inner wisdom about social, psychological and even psychosomatic processes This implicit knowledge of the body finds its way into the individual speech It colors speech, makes slight shifts of meaning and is accompanied by non- und paraverbal back ground music 5

The Effect The client develops metaphors and inner visualizations out of his/her own speech These metaphors are longlasting and bring along ressources that the client has not been aware of These metaphors can be wonderfully combined with stories, sayings and metaphors of PPT (as experienced in a number of common seminars with Nossrat Peseschkian) 6

Techniques of revealing the Idiolect Ask for words (keywords) and their meaning. Hint: They might be kind of stressed nonverbally and in the tone of voice. The way they are used might slightly shift from common meaning Dare to ask concrete and simple questions on seemingly selfevident and every day life topics, take words literally! Pick up metaphors (even hidden in words or every day life situations) and let them be described by the client Use open or opening questions Follow the positive signals (non- and paraverbal) in the conversation Your conversation partner determines topic and course of the conversation. She/he knows what is wrong or right for her/him. (Attitude of being open for corrections) Accept the boundaries of the client (even if hinted indirectly) 7

Following the nonverbal (positive) signals of Idiolect 8

Idiolect and Body Perception a Discovery Winkler - Idiolektik - Die Lehre von der Eigensprache 9

Speech Metaphors in Sayings and Psychosomatic and Evolutionary Mechanisms 10

Head as means to ram Hearkening to realize dangers, damping against overstimulation Inhibition of voice as protection against predators and dominant group members Freezing incl. tension of thorax as protection against predators Tension of backbone > bearing of charges Stretching and bowing of backbone and neck > posture in status conflicts Inhibition/activation of aggression > inhibition /activation of digestion (from hunting context) To front sb. I m up to my ears with work That left me speechless It left me breathless We all have our crosses to bear To show backbone Inhibition and fastening of sexual processes in threatening situations The skin as archaic excretion organ (via metabiloic nerv transport, esp. in overstimulating sit.) Inhibition of muscular flight impulses if flight is impossible (freezing) Choler/ choleric) lat. = gal Weeny, wiener, go off halfcocked To get under the skin To get weak at the knees It makes me feel giddy To be sick of the sight of sth./sb. It gets up my nose To clench one s teeth, dogged To pierce sb. to the heart To stomach sth. Poisonous remark To get a grip on sth. To wet one s pants, sth. scared the shit out of me To brace one s feet against sth./so. Apes: Dizziness in ambiguous climbing situations (parallel soc.ambiguity) Inhibition of sensory signals in overstimulating situations Parallel: immunic system and psych. power of resistance (infection diseases and autoimmune reactions) esp.loss of status sit. Teeth as means to bite > inhibition of biting reactions: clench of jaw and teeth Clench of intercostal muscles as protection of heart and inner organs > breathing problems and heart -ache Handling things and muscular hand reactions Swallowing sth. unpallatable (and in metaphorical sense) and clench of oesophagus and stomach Poisonous atmosphere and reaction of detoxification organs (kidney, liver) Digestive discharge in flight and fear reactions Ambiguous status impulses and simultaneous reactions of bowing and stretching posture muscles
