2 THE TAMIL NADU Dr. M.G.R MEDICAL UNIVERSITY, CHENNAI M.D. Tropical Medicine 1. GOAL The goal of MD Tropical Medicine programme shall be to produce competent specialists and/or medical teachers, i. Who are well equipped to recognize and respond to the health needs specific to tropical countries, especially India, and carry out professional obligations ethically and in keeping with the objectives of the National Health Policy; ii. Who shall have mastered competencies pertaining to tropical diseases that are required to be practiced for the care of individual patients, iii. Who shall be able to prioritise, plan and implement appropriate measures with high coverage to achieve effective control of tropical diseases of public health importance at community and national level,. iv. Who shall be aware of the contemporary advance and developments in Tropical Medicine; iv. Who shall have acquired a spirit of scientific inquiry and have a firm grasp of the principles of research methodology and epidemiology; and v. Who shall have acquired the adequate skills in teaching of medical and allied health professionals 2. OBJECTIVES: postgraduate training in Tropical Medicine, the student will have obtained A) Knowledge i. In prevention, diagnosis, treatment and care interventions for diseases (both communicable and non-communicable) widely prevalent in tropical countries ii. About National Health Policy and various diseases control programmes in India iii. About the social, economical, environmental, nutritional and biological determinants of health in a given case, and take them

3 B) Attitude into account while planning therapeutic, rehabilitative, preventive and promotive strategies i. Demonstrate empathy and humane approach towards patients and their families, and exhibit interpersonal behaviour in accordance with the societal norms and expectations ii. Work as an effective team member for implementing appropriate disease control measures with high coverage C) Skills i. Diagnose and treat majority of disease conditions on the basis of clinical assessment, and rationally selected investigations. ii. Plan and implement measures for disease prevention, health promotion and rehabilitation of patients suffering from tropical diseases iii. Coordination with public health officials to implement national disease control programmes iv. Prioritize public health needs of poor and marginalized populations v. Deliver interventions through appropriate technology at sustainable costs vi. Plan collaborative, multi-sectoral (veterinary, agriculture, education) and trans-disciplinary approach for disease control with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes for people, animals and the environment ( One Health concept) vii. Organize and supervise the chosen/assigned health care services demonstrating adequate managerial skills in the clinic/hospital or the field situation viii.develop skills as a self-directed learner, recognize continuing education needs; select and use appropriate learning resources. ix. Develop skills in using educational methods and techniques as applicable to the teaching of Medical / Nursing / Allied Health Sciences students / health workers. x. Function as an effective leader of a health team engaged in Health Care Delivery, teaching / training and/or research
