What is honorary authorship? LisHng of people as authors who do not meet the journal s criteria for authorship Well-intenHoned courtesy help a colleague s career acknowledge a Director of the research lab or Chairperson Lack of awareness of criteria Fear of confrontahon or retaliahon MoffaT, B. (2011). Responsible Authorship: Why Researchers Must Forgo Honorary Authorship. Accountability In Research: Policies & Quality Assurance, 18(2), doi: / Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 32
What authorship criteria are most commonly used by medical journals? SubstanHal contribuhons to the concephon or design of the work; or the acquisihon, analysis, or interpretahon of data for the work; AND Draiing the work or revising it crihcally for important intellectual content; AND Final approval of the version to be published; AND Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that queshons related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately inveshgated and resolved. Defining the role of authors and contributors. InternaHonal CommiTee of Medical Journal Editors, htp:// Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 33
Why is honorary authorship a problem? Unethical research prachce Misleads readers Dilutes the value of contribuhons made by legihmate authors Honorary author can be held accountable if work is called into queshon Plagiarism Research fraud MoffaT, B. (2011). Responsible Authorship: Why Researchers Must Forgo Honorary Authorship. Accountability In Research: Policies & Quality Assurance, 18(2), doi: / Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 34
How can you avoid honorary authorship? First authors Invite all co-inveshgators on the project to serve as authors early in the process If they agree to serve, ensure that they have an opportunity to parhcipate in all authorship tasks required by the journal If any people did not parhcipate in required tasks, move their names to the acknowledgments If you were pressured to add a person who did not meet required authorship criteria, nohfy the editor of the journal Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 35
How can you avoid honorary authorship? Co-authors Ask first authors to remove your name from the author list if you did not contribute in all required authorship tasks If you receive an from a journal about a paper and see that your name is inappropriately included as a co-author, ask the first author to remove you and nohfy the editor Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 36
Updates in publishing and peer review How can you avoid being scammed by a predatory journal? What is honorary authorship and why is it a problem? What are green and gold open access publishing? How can readers use post publicahon reviews to help improve publicahon quality? htps:// uploads/2012/05/open-access.jpg Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR ScienHfic Conference 37
What is gold open access publishing? Final published version of the paper is freely available online without a subscriphon Pros Increased accessibility for readers Increased likelihood of citahons NegaHve image due to predatory publishers Authors pay higher fee to publish Cons Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR ScienHfic Conference 38
What is green open access publishing? Available as an ophon in most subscriphon journals Authors can freely share final versions of their paper aier an embargo period set by the publisher Preprint servers, personal websites, inshtuhonal repositories Wiley s Self-Archiving Policy. htps://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/journal-authors/licensing-open-access/openaccess/self-archiving.html Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 39
What is green open access publishing? Authors can freely share the submited version of their paper (i.e. version before changes were introduced during the peer review/copy-edihng process) at any Hme WARNING: Many journals require that submited work be original and use originality checking soiware Increased risk of paper rejechon if large porhons of duplicated content detected Wiley s Self-Archiving Policy. htps://authorservices.wiley.com/author-resources/journal-authors/licensing-open-access/openaccess/self-archiving.html Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 40
What about online posang of a thesis or dissertaaon? Safest to ask target journal about their policy ahead of Hme Many academic inshtuhons allow the ophon of a one year embargo of online poshng if findings in thesis/dissertahon have not yet been accepted in a journal Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 41
Updates in publishing and peer review How can you avoid being scammed by a predatory journal? What is honorary authorship and why is it a problem? What are green and gold open access publishing? 43 What is a post-publicaaon review? Any reader can express concerns about a published paper Recommended contacts: EIC Journal s publisher Journal s administrahve office Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 43
How are post-publicaaon reviews addressed? The EIC will typically contact the authors, nohfy them of the reviewer concerns, and offer one of 3 choices for addressing the concerns: Minor errors: Corrigendum or Erratum LeTer to the Editor Major errors: RetracHon Ref. CommiTee on PublicaHon Ethics flowcharts. htps://publicahonethics.org/resources/flowcharts/ Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 44
How are post-publicaaon reviews addressed? Corrigendum or Erratum If the authors agree with reviewers that there was a minor error in the published paper, authors can submit a Corrigendum or Erratum for publicahon in the Journal. Corrigendum = error was made by authors Erratum = error was made by publisher The Corrigendum or Erratum will be linked to the original arhcle in database searches. Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 45
How are post-publicaaon reviews addressed? LeTer to the Editor If authors disagree that there are minor errors warranhng changes in the published paper, they can request that the reviewer submit a LeTer to the Editor. The EIC will invite the reviewer to submit the LeTer and forward the leter to authors, invihng them to submit their response. Both the leter and the author response will then be published in the Journal and linked to the original arhcle in database searches. Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 46
How are post-publicaaon reviews addressed? RetracHon: If the Editor has concerns that a major error was made or that there may be evidence of research fraud, authors may be asked to retract their paper. If authors choose not to retract the paper, the Editor may seek recommendahons from COPE or forward the case to the journal s publishing company for legal proceedings/retrachon. Jeryl Jones 2017 ACVR Scien5fic Conference 47
