Course content covers: the purpose of IV and blood withdrawal therapy, legal implications, management of IV s, and possible complications and blood withdrawal/ venipuncture procedures. Two certificates will be provided at the successful completion of the course: a Continuing education Certificate for 36 CE hours and a State Certificate for IV therapy. Materials fee is required. Schedule Description: This course will instruct students on the purpose of IV and blood withdrawal therapy, legal implications, management of IV s, and possible complications of venipuncture. Upon attending all class sessions, passing a posttest with 75% and successfully completing three IV venipuncture s and three blood withdrawals the participant will receive a state certificate for IV Therapy/Blood Withdrawal Certification. The IV therapy and Blood Withdrawal class is a 36 contact hour course with 27 hours spent in theory and 9 hours spent in practical demonstration. Discuss rationale for use of IV therapy and Blood/withdrawal in the clinical setting 4. Explain the types of venipuncture devices, IV delivery systems, and IV fluids used in the clinical setting. 5. Understand the principles for preparing and accessing a peripheral vein for IV therapy or blood withdrawal and correlate anatomy and physiology to criteria for selection of venipuncture sites. 6. 4 Method of Evaluation/Grading: Evaluation will be based on a two written final exam, one on Blood Withdrawal and one on IV therapy, and demonstration of successful performance of the following skills: correct maintenance of medical and surgical asepsis, setting up an IV and tubing, initiating IV therapy using correct device and venipuncture site, completion of three peripheral venipunctures for IV therapy, completion of three blood withdrawal venipunctures. The course is a credit/no credit course, a 75% or higher final score based upon the total number of points is necessary to receive credit. If a student requests a grade, the grade will be based on the final exam score.
