These instructions below are from the NRCan recertification study guide for recertification examinations: NDT Written Instruction Write a detailed instruction for one of the tested specimens. The written instruction must be completed in a manner that will permit another inspector to follow your steps and duplicate your results. It should include: a) Scope of the inspection. b) Personnel qualifications requirements. c) A description of the exam specimen. d) A list of equipment, accessories, and reference standards. e) A description of the calibration procedures specific for the test specimen. f) A description of the inspection procedures specific for the test specimen. g) The instrument settings at the time of inspection. h) Reporting of the results. Note: Although to write instructions a candidate may obtain inspiration from the general information accompanying the test specimen, he or she should remember that the NDT Certifying Agency requires a specific instruction to inspect a specific specimen. 2 Page 2 of Scope/Objective Method of Inspection (be specific yoke/wet bench, AC/DC, wet/dry, residual/continuous). Description of potential discontinuities that could be found based on the history of the part. A written instruction that will permit a Magnetic Particle inspector to follow your steps and duplicate your results. It will include how to setup the equipment, perform the test, record the results as per the instructions given and report the results. This written instruction will establish the technique for 100% inspection with the sensitivity level to locate the smallest rejectable discontinuity 2.0 Personnel Qualifications Carry out NDT according to this instruction under the supervision of a certified CGSB Level 2 or 3 personnel. Perform the following tasks: Setup the equipment. Perform the test. Record and classify the results of the test. Report the results. Instruction is written in a way so that the personnel performing Magnetic Particle shall have minimally successfully completed a Magnetic Particle training course in accordance with CGSB and have minimally obtained one-month work experience. 3.0 Description of Test Part (as described on the NRCan drawing) Part number Type of Material Casting, Forging, Weld Dimensions of test part (length, width, thickness) Welding parameters (bevel, groove, method) Welding process (SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW) Part history (in-service or not) Surface Condition (rusty, paint, scale, etc )

Example minimum requirements of lighting (white or black light or both) - Black light 1000 μw/cm 2, 20 lux max 2 fc - White light 100 fc or 1000 lux Yoke lift test (AC 10lbs). Fluorescent Particle concentration ( ml per 100 ml) Certificate of compliance or Batch numbers for particles and black and white consumables 7.0 Pre-Inspection Pre-job inspection of magnetizing equipment and work area. 8.0 Testing Procedure (start to finish) Precleaning Visual Inspection Diagram and Inspection report showing shot sequence for magnetization both yoke and wet bench Step by step description of how to properly examine the part Painting (B&W) Magnetizing with yoke Magnetizing with wet bench Applying particles Indication reading Reporting and measuring of indications Demagnetization Post Cleaning 9.0 Equipment Settings at time of inspection Yoke settings (amperage, AC/DC) Light meter readings (white and black) Batch numbers, concentration of particles
