Needle-Stick Resistance Testing & Ergonomics For Gloves Presented by Maxi Brown April 25 th Intertek 2011,
Current Glove Testing Based on ASTM F Standard Test Method for Protective Clothing Material Resistance to Puncture. Various versions of this based on method have used a hypodermic needle placed on the end of the standard nail described in the standard. The material to be tested is securely clamped so that a flat area of the material is subjected to penetration by hypodermic needle. 2 Intertek 2011,
Issues With Current Glove Testing & The Method Based On ASTM F Only glove material is tested. Does not test for possible weak points in glove construction, such as seams and finger valleys. There is currently no ergonomic assessment on needle protective gloves to reflect possible scenarios in the field. 3 Intertek 2011,
Intertek Developed Equipment Modified Needle Holder Adapter. Designed to fit into the end of a hypodermic needle Valley Test Rig. Allows for testing of the penetration resistance of the section between two fingers of a glove. Testing Rig Designed to test the penetration resistance of a flat area of a glove Single Finger Rig. Designed to test the penetration resistance of the tip of a finger on a glove 4 Intertek 2011,
Proposed Method Test numerous aspects of the construction of a glove rather then just a flat area. Test seamed areas to determine if they are more resistive or lest resistive to penetration by a needle then a flat area. Areas more prone to penetration, such as the finger tips to be tested. Include ergonomic testing of gloves. 5 Intertek 2011,
Ergonomics Ergonomic tests include the ability to Make a clenched fist and fully splay out the fingers repeatedly Write Zip a jacket open and closed Remove a syringe from the pocket od a jacket Pick up syringe from a hard surface 6 Intertek 2011,

This will give an idea of how a needle travels through the material of a glove at higher speeds. Stress/Flex pre-treatment prior to penetration resistance to evaluate breakdown of performance in use 15 Intertek 2011,
