8 Tennessee Youth Falls Prevention Team In Cohort 1, the TN team reviewed school concussion policies, identified training needs, refined the DoE concussion policy, and added a concussion resource list to the sport concussion webpage. In Cohort 2, they will evaluate the return to play policy, create resources for return to learn, take concussion forms electronic, and plan concussion training sessions for teachers and coaches. 9 Tennessee Youth Falls Prevention Team Process Measure 2: Percent of schools requiring an approved concussion training course Due to a mandate, all schools require an approved concussion training course. In Cohort 2, the team is changing the way they report this measure. They will collect and assess the mandated guidelines that schools develop and determine the percent of those that are excellent. Their goal is to work with the schools with the worst guidelines to improve them. They are currently developing this project and will seek information from schools/athletic directors. It may be some time before they report data on this measure. Falls Prevention 9

10 Pennsylvania Pennsylvania is working to reduce concussions in sports and falls in the home environment by adapting the CHOP Home Outreach Program. PA s work is closely linked to its Title V priorities, Action Plan, and current programming work. The Falls Prevention team is comprised of program administrators working in these program areas across two bureaus within the DOH. 11 Pennsylvania Process Measure 2: Percent of schools requiring an approved concussion training course Due to a mandate, all schools require an approved concussion training course. In Cohort 2, the team plans to assess the policies or way that the mandate is carried out in the schools, or potentially assess differences between different types of schools. They are looking for a comprehensive way to track who in the schools is participating in the training. Falls Prevention 11

Number of homes in which window guards or stair gates are installed In Cohort 2, this number will be reported cumulatively rather than the number of homes receiving installations on a monthly basis. 13 Massachusetts Increase the number of public, charter, and private middle and high schools in compliance with MA concussion regulations to 70% or higher Improve process for mandated yearly data reports from MA middle and high schools to get a quicker response and higher rate of compliance. 14 Massachusetts Alternative Process Measure: Number of letters of affirmation of concussion policies submitted 350 Massachusetts June 6-July 17 July 18-July 27 July 27-Aug 17 August 17-Sept 22 From , this team collected 265 letters of affirmation from schools; in , that number dipped to 203. The team set out to improve school response rates and confirmation of current sports concussion policies. As a result of testing new communication methods, they collected 332 letters of affirmation in Falls Prevention 14

15 Florida The Florida Falls Prevention Strategy Team will work with the Department of Health s Asthma Home Visiting Program to utilize the American College of Preventive Medicine s childhood injury risk assessment tool. The state will also partner with youth sports recreational leagues to encourage staff, youth, and parents to complete an approved concussion training course by distributing CDC s Heads Up promotional materials.
