DP (Mpa) EMG (µv) LUMBAR SUPPORT CM BACKREST INCLINATION (DEGREES) 3 5 In the first graph, it can be clearly seen that combining recline with lumbar support reduces lumbar disc pressures. This graph compares lumbar disc pressure in chairs which have nil, 3cm and 5cm of lumbar support. The second graph highlights the measurement of muscle activity in the back. When a user is positioned at 80 (or sitting forward over the desk) muscle activity is at its highest as the spine needs considerable support The outcome of this is that the further one reclines, with increased lumbar the more that pressure in the lumbar spine is reduced. When the same user reclines backwards through 90, and sits rearwards at between 105 and 110, it can be seen that muscle activity has been more than halved from when that user was sitting in a forward position. In summary, for users who sit for extended periods of time, the key to be able to do so in a healthy working posture is to sit slightly reclined in order to reduce both lumbar disc pressures and muscle activity
