7 MISSOURI PHYSICAL THERAPY ASSOCIATION Grant for Promotion of Physical Education 2011 Application Deadline APRIL 1, 2011 Background In June of 2002, the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) House of Delegates adopted a position on Physical Education Advocacy (HOD ). The statement reads as follows: It is the position of the APTA that the provision of regular physical education is an essential component of the education of all children. Physical education should provide students, K through 12, the opportunity for development and maintenance of physical fitness and motor skills. Therefore, the APTA, its components and members should act as advocates for physical education in the schools. To that end, the Missouri Physical Therapy Association (MPTA) pledges their commitment to the promotion of good health habits. Physical activity is an essential element of health, and the development of physical activity habits needs to begin in children and adolescents. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommends that school aged youth participate in 60 minutes or more of moderate to vigorous physical activity that is developmentally appropriate, enjoyable, and involves a variety of activity. 1 Many sources agree that patterns of physical activity developed as a child or adolescent are carried into adulthood. 1,2,3 Health benefits from physical activity can include increased strength, improved bone density, increased endurance, improved blood lipid profiles and body composition measures, reduction in injuries, enhanced motor performance, better weight control as well as psychological measures of enhanced self-esteem, improved socialization and decreased mental stress and depression. 2,3,4,5,6,7,8 There are additional long-term benefits of physical activity such as reduction in atherosclerotic disease, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, breast cancer, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. 1,3,4,5 There is no doubt that physical activity should be a part of our daily lives, so the Missouri Physical Therapy Association is trying to get every body MOVING FORWARD! To support this goal, the MPTA is offering grants to physical education programs in schools. Eligible schools are invited to request grant funding ($1000) to purchase equipment that will provide physical activity opportunities for all children and promote a life-long commitment to fitness. If the abstract has been previously peer reviewed and accepted for presentation elsewhere, provide the name and date of the presentation. Sample Abstract See the most recent January issue of J Orthop Sports Phys Ther for examples of published abstracts of Research Reports. Category 2: Evidence in Practice In the January 2002 journal of Physical Therapy, the APTA started a new series entitled Evidence in Practice. The purpose of the series is to help busy practitioners learn how they can access evidence in a practical and effective manner and to illustrate how to find the available evidence to answer meaningful clinical questions. It is in hopes that practitioners will see how they can harness their enthusiasm by developing answerable questions and seeking new knowledge. The end results are intended to enhance the science underlying care and, even more importantly, increase the effectiveness of our practice. (Rothstein JM. Editor s Note: Opportunities. Phys Ther. Jan 2002: 82.1). The MPTA research committee as of 2002 started accepting Evidence in Practice Poster Presentations with the intentions to give clinicians and students an opportunity to share their clinical questions and reviews of the literature. 10

11 Criteria for Submission Abstracts for Evidence in Practice should include the following information: Purpose: What was the clinical question that launched your search? State whether this review of the literature pertains to treatment, evaluation, prognosis or diagnosis. Using the Guide to Physical Therapists Practice, 2 nd Edition, state the scope of practice toward which your question is geared. Patient Population or Problem: Describe the relevant characteristics of subjects and or PT problems. Methods: Describe how you went about finding the evidence including but not limited to the databases, keywords, and limits used. Describe your criteria for inclusion and exclusion for this review of the literature. Results: Briefly summarize the data derived from your critique. Conclusions: What can you logically conclude through the analysis of your articles? What is the clinical importance/ relevance? Discussion and Evidence Based Recommendations: Offer evidence based recommendations from your review. If applicable, compare and contrast to other published reviews. All abstracts submissions must include contact information (name, phone number and address) for a contact person who can be reached up until the time of the conference. If the abstract has been previously peer reviewed and accepted for presentation elsewhere, provide the name and date of the presentation. Sample Abstract Evidence in Practice: Coma Stimulation. Efficacy for Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury. Hughes RM, McQueen MK, Phillips CL, Ratliff LB, Vaughn HA,Wigger BC, Williams CL. University of Missouri. HAVaughn@health.missouri.edu. PURPOSE: This review is intended to explore the theory of a coma simulation program, its components, and the research surrounding its efficacy. Members of the rehabilitation team, including physical therapists, should be aware of current research regarding coma stimulation for utilization in clinical decision-making. METHODS: A literature search was done through various internet and literature searches through OVID, PubMed, Google, Altavista, Pedro, and Medline from Terms searched included traumatic brain injury, coma stimulation, coma treatment programs, arousal, and several combinations of the above mentioned and limited to English. Two randomized control trials and one cohort study will be assessed in this review. The studies believability were considered us the level of evidence using Sackett s Levels of Evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Severe traumatic head injury hospitalizes approximately 14 out of 100,000 people in the U.S. each year, 10% of whom will remain in a coma. A coma stimulation program is one intervention used for the comatose patient. This program may include tactile, vestibular, kinesthetic, olfactory, gustatory, auditory, and visual sensory stimulation. Theoretically, coma stimulation may decrease length of coma and increase overall level of arousal. Currently there is no general consensus as to how a coma stimulation program should be implemented. It is not considered the responsibility of one particular health care provider and no special training is necessary prior to participating in the administration of such a program. DISCUSSIONS: The research does not support implementation of coma stimulation programs. Studies found were not of great validity or reliability to formulate solid conclusions. Outcome measures were generally lacking in specificity to coma stimulation and immediate physiological responses. Development of a specific outcome measure is needed. More research needs to be done to determine the mechanism of coma and then to determine whether a coma stimulation program would be beneficial or detrimental to the patient. Abstract and Poster Formatting Information Instructions for Abstract Formatting Abstract must be no more than 450 words (Purpose through Conclusion) using Times New Roman font. **With permission, abstracts may be printed in the MPTA newsletter and posted on the MPTA website. Instructions for Poster Formatting & Display The poster should be no larger than 40 tall and 64 wide. Authors must supply their own thumbtacks. Review Process: All abstract submissions will be peer reviewed.. The contact person for the submission will be notified by regarding poster acceptance status. 12 Missouri PT Programs Accept Challenge to Raise Funds for Research By: Natalie Fuerst, SPT A total of 61 schools participated in the Miami-Marquette Challenge to raise a record-setting $262,715 in support of the Foundation for Physical Therapy. Participating schools in Missouri collectively raised over $5,250 for the 2010 Challenge! Congratulations to Washington University in Saint Louis for earning an Honorable Mention this year. The Foundation would also like to thank both Saint Louis University and Rockhurst University for their significant contribution to the 2010 Challenge and for their support of the Foundation. Since the Challenge began in 1989, students have raised a grand total of $1,810,930. The annual Marquette Challenge is a grassroots fundraising effort coordinated and carried out by physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students across the country to support the Foundation for Physical Therapy s mission of providing funding opportunities to outstanding physical therapist researchers. In the latest funding cycle, the Challenge funded a Promotion of Doctoral Studies (PODS) I Scholarship to Meryl Alappattu, PT, DPT, of the University of Florida. Challenge dollars also partially funded a two-year grant to Scott Stackhouse, PT, PhD, of Arcadia University, for his research project, Combination of High-Intensity Strength and Locomotor Training to Improve Walking Activity in Ambulatory Adolescents with Cerebral Palsy. Proceeds from the Challenge also helped to fund the $300,000 Clagett Family Research Grant, awarded to Laurie King, PT, PhD, of Oregon Health Sciences University, for her project Effectiveness of Physical Therapy in Chronic Neurologic Disease; The Role of Co-morbidities and Delivery of Physical Therapy Services. The first place winner of the Miami-Marquette Challenge was the University of Pittsburgh, who raised $40,000. Sacred Heart University won second place, raising $30,265, and SUNY Upstate Medical University won third place, raising $18,274. Faculty of all PT and PTA programs in Missouri are encouraged to speak to their students about the importance of supporting the Foundation for Physical Therapy and physical therapy research. Students nationwide hope to raise $200,000 in the Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge and reach the $2 million mark in total funds raised since 1989! 14 Finance Committee Report Julie High, MPTA Treasurer In September the Finance Committee approved the proposed MPTA Treasurer budget for 2011 and supported the motion to present to the MPTA Board in October. This motion will ask for the dissolution of the Research Fund and for research to be supported by the PT Fund. The rationale for this motion is that the Research Fund does not have any resources and in fact funding to support research has come from the MPTA general budget for the past three years. Research is listed as a service provided by the PT fund. Both funds are tax exempt funds. The proposed 2011 budget was presented to the finance committee for review and while the committee approved the proposed budget, one member did reiterate that budget line item changes should be presented with supporting documentation for any increases or decreases. 18 WUPT expands offerings in Clinical Fellowship Washington University Program in Physical Therapy announces the expansion of the APTA credentialed Clinical Fellowship in Diagnosis and Management of Movement Impairment Syndromes. In addition to the training that occurs at Washington University, a regional mentoring training program has been established to allow physical therapists to complete the fellowship training while still living and working in their home locale. In the new format, fellows in the regional mentoring training program will receive part-time, one-on-one instruction from mentors who have been educated and trained in treating patients using movement impairmentbased diagnoses. In addition, fellows learn through post-professional coursework via the internet, and will travel to St. Louis four times a year for in-depth mentoring, education and testing from Dr. Mary Kate McDonnell, Associate Director of Clinical Fellowship, Dr. Suzy Cornbleet, Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, and additional WU faculty. Regional sites that may be of interest for MPTA members are in Kansas City, KS and Collinsville, IL. The current Clinical Fellowship format will continue. The in-residence fellow will practice full-time at Washington University Physical Therapy Clinics, be mentored by Drs. McDonnell and Cornbleet, and participate in the Fellowship education curriculum. The Clinical Fellowship provides outstanding training for the physical therapist interested in attaining specialized training in orthopedic physical therapy. This expansion in our format allows more clinicians to take advantage of this educational opportunity. We have recruited an incredible group of mentors and we are excited to train the next group of Fellows, said Dr. Mary Kate McDonnell. Applications for each Fellowship format are now available on-line at pt.wustl.edu and are due on March 4. Both models require a one year commitment and will start on August 1, Additional information, including all training sites, salary information, and tuition costs are listed on the website.
