1 STATE COLLEGE OF FLORIDA OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT PROGRAM OTH 1014C FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY & KINESIOLOGY (AS) LEC. LAB CR COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to explore the analysis of human movement and its impact on function through the integration of biomechanics, kinesiology and applied anatomy. Principles of exercise, therapeutic use of occupation and activities are introduced. Manual muscle testing and goniometric measurement are examined and practiced. Principles are reinforced through a problem solving approach to increase the understanding of movement of the body and the relationship to occupational therapy intervention including the interaction of areas of occupation, performance patterns, activity demands, context(s) and environments and client factors. RELATIONSHIP TO THE CURRICULUM DESIGN: Functional Anatomy & Kinesiology is designed to explore the principles of kinesiology which are core to the understanding of occupational therapy treatment. This course will assist the student to apply principles from the biological sciences to the biomechanical principles of human movement utilized in the performance in areas of occupation. The focus is on performance skills, performance patterns, and the influence of context, activity demands and client factors. Students begin to experience how to be comfortable with the therapeutic use of touch and being touched by others. The laboratory experiences provide hands on experiences to further enhance student understanding and the applications of these principles using a problem based approach. PREREQUISITES: Admission to the OTA Program, satisfactory completion of BSC 2085C, Mathematics Area II, A.S, PSY REVISION: 6/07, 11/07, 3/08, 8/09, 6/11, 6/13, 6/15, 12/15 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon satisfactory completion of the course, the student will be able to: 1.0 Describe the skeletal, muscular and neurological prerequisites of human movement. 1.1 Using appropriate kinesiological terminology describe musculoskeletal structures, specific joint motions, postural alignment and patterns of movement. 1.2 Correctly identify and name bones, key anatomical landmarks, and joints found on the human skeleton. 1.3 Classify joints according to structure, and explain the relationship between joint structure and function.

2 2 1.4 Describe the structure and properties of skeletal in relationship to cardiac and visceral muscles. 1.5 Identify the planes and axes of movement for each synovial joint. 1.6 Explain how the muscle line of pull and the muscle fiber arrangement affects the movement produced by the muscle. 1.7 Define the various roles muscles play in movement and explain the cooperative action of muscles in controlling movement during functional activities. 1.8 Describe the muscle attachments and innervations. 1.9 Demonstrate sensory testing for sterognosis, tactile localization, two point discrimination, vibration, proprioception, kinesthesia, temperature discrimination, sharp/dull discrimination and light touch. 2.0 Describe the biomechanics involved in human movement 2.1 Discuss the principles of biomechanics 2.2 Apply the basic principles of biomechanics to normal human movement. 2.3 Identify examples of levers in the human body. 2.4 Identify examples of Newton s laws of motion in every day activities. 2.5 Define and locate the center of gravity and base of support in the human body. 2.6 Relate the principles of stability to human movement. 3.0 Analyze the muscle activity required in the body during functional activities. 3.1 Relate principles of biomechanics to the function of the musculoskeletal system. 3.2 Name, locate and palpate muscles of the body. 3.3 Identify the primary actions of muscles as agonists, antagonists or stabilizers during movement. 3.4 Describe the roles and types of contractions performed by each muscle/muscle group involved. 3.5 Describe the internal and external forces acting on the joint during movement. 3.6 Differentiate between the concepts of joint mobility and stability and relate those concepts to normal movement. 4.0 Utilize principles of the biological sciences and research when utilizing standardized testing for manual muscle testing and goniometry. 4.1 Describe the parameters of normal range of motion for each joint. 4.2 Describe the factors that limit joint motion. 4.3 Explain the standard procedure for performing goniometric measurements for each joint. 4.4 Demonstrate standard goniometric measurements for each joint. 4.5 Define end feels related to range of motion limitations. 4.6 List six levels of the standard grading system for manual muscle testing and define each level. 4.7 Describe the correct method of manual muscle testing for each muscle/muscle group. 4.8 Demonstrate standard manual muscle testing procedures. 4.9 Describe the relationship of muscle strength to range of motion.

3 Demonstrate proficiency in the use of a dynamometer and pinch meter to determine hand strength Describe the relationship of muscle strength to the ability to perform activities of daily living Understand the difference between standardized and functional testing Describe the elements of reliability and validity utilized in standardized testing. 5.0 Correctly demonstrate techniques and instruction in therapeutic exercise, occupations and activities. 5.1 Discuss the goals of therapeutic exercise. 5.2 Discuss the principles of therapeutic exercise and relate these to the client s occupational profile and goals. 5.3 Differentiate between passive, active, active assisted and resisted range of motion. 5.4 Demonstrate techniques for passive, active, active assisted and resistive range of motion. 5.5 Differentiate between isometric, isotonic and isokinitic exercise. 5.6 Differentiate between anaerobic and aerobic exercise. 5.7 Discuss techniques for stretching, and the indications. 5.8 Identify indications and contraindications for each type of exercise discussed in class/lab. 5.9 Given case studies, correctly identify and demonstrate appropriate stretching and strengthening exercises, therapeutic use of occupation and activities Given a simulated clinical situation, demonstrate the ability to instruct a client in passive ROM, active ROM, active assisted ROM, and resisted ROM Document simulated patient care activities in a problem oriented, SOAP note format. 6.0 Demonstrate an understanding of the meaning and dynamics of occupation as it relates to function in daily activities including the interaction of areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, activity demands, content(s) and environment and client factors. 6.1 Analyze daily living activities and discuss the component parts of the tasks. 6.2 Analyze the influence of context, activity demands and client factors on the performance of a functional activity. 6.3 Select and provide direct occupational therapy interventions to enhance safety, wellness and performance in areas of activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, education, work, play, leisure, and social participation. 7.0 Demonstrate effective communication skills and professional behaviors when performing assessment and treatment techniques related to direct client care. 7.1 Discuss the importance of establishing positive professional relationships in the health care setting. 7.2 Discuss how to adapt communication skills to varied levels of understanding and cultural orientations to foster health literacy.

Students who do not achieve a minimum grade of 70 in this course will not be able to progress to the OTA Program.
