U24763 Community Justice This unit introduces students to the delivery of community justice in contemporary criminal justice, preparing students for a job in the Probation Service or working with offenders in a broader context. A critical appreciation of the origins, debates and future direction of the Probation Service in England and Wales is offered in light of key changes and challenges to the structure, organisation and values through the current penal, political and social landscape. This unit will examine the management of offenders in the community, including sex offenders and young offenders. Students also develop invaluable and transferable knowledge based skills for working with offenders in the community, through a combination of lectures, seminars and assessment and employability workshops. U21001 Victims of Crime: Key players in Criminal Justice One of the most profound influences upon criminology and criminal justice policy during the last twenty years has been the shift in emphasis from an offender-focused criminal justice system to the unprecedented focus now being placed upon the victims of crime. This unit examines within a historical, social and political context the underlying reasons for this extraordinary shift in focus and the subsequent impact upon victims' experiences of the criminal justice process and the practices of criminal justice professionals. In particular, it considers whether the introduction of policies, initiatives and legislation aimed at improving the status of crime victims from the 'forgotten figure' of the criminal justice process to a 'key player' is becoming a reality or remains purely aspirational. 40% Group Presentation, 60% Essay 30% Poster; 70% Essay U26238 Missing Persons: Issues and Investigation The purpose of this unit is to demonstrate to students a variety of issues relating to missing persons cases. Students will be introduced to the unique challenges that this type of case presents to authorities and to families, and will be asked to consider the role and influence of various agencies including the police, search and rescue, and the media. Students will also explore ways in which their core criminological and psychology knowledge is relevant to missing persons cases. The delivery of the unit will emphasise real missing persons cases, and will encourage critical analysis of how such incidents have been dealt with in the criminal justice system and by society as a whole. 50% Essay; 50% Report U21009 Contemporary Criminologies This Level 6 Unit focuses on two key themes in contemporary criminology. The centrality of punishment and the administering of pain within the criminal justice system and how its problematic relationship to society has occupied recent criminological thought in the works of John Pratt, David Garland and Patrick O'Malley. In addition, the development of contemporary criminological accounts within the discipline is another recent advance which departs from traditional criminological perspectives and turns our attention to the pleasures of acting criminally or in a deviant manner. As a result the Unit transposes these themes of pains and pleasures in a contemporary, cutting edge analysis of criminology. 30% Group Presentation; 70% Essay U23807 Cybercrime: Deviance, Crime and Terror The creation of the Internet, especially the commercialisation of the World Wide Web (WWW), has given rise to a new criminological phenomenon cybercrime. The purpose of this unit is to examine the group of activities covered by the big umbrella term of cybercrime. We will study its origins, development, definitions, typologies, technologies, levels of social harm and possible modes of governance. Our studies will be situated and contextualised in contemporary criminological thinking about, and technological challenges to, existing notions of crime and governance. We will map out the terrain of cybercrime by considering critically various roles that Internet technologies have played in the emergence of different types of crime. We will identify emerging areas of cybercrime. Different modes of governance of cybercrime will be discussed by evaluating contemporary legal, policy and police responses to cybercrime nationally and internationally. 30% Group Presentation; 70% Report U25560 Dangerous Offenders and Public Protection This unit will critically examine how sexual and violent dangerous offenders assessed as posing a risk of harm are managed within the criminal justice system. There will be an analysis 40% Poster; 60% Essay of problematic concepts such as dangerousness, risk and seriousness and an exploration of the construction of certain stereotypes of the sexual and/or violent offender. It will critically explore explanations and profiles of both sexual and violent offenders. Legal and criminal justice responses to these offenders will be considered in a critical context with students being given the opportunity to take part in risk assessment and management exercises, developing a risk management plan that mirrors the work of National Probation Service (NPS) officers and those who work in a wider public protection context. 2

U21002 Hate Crime Hate crime is a complex phenomenon. As an object of academic study it is a relatively new and under explored issue, particularly in Britain. Despite a long history of what we now label as `hate crimes', it was the murder of Stephen Lawrence in London in 1993 and the subsequent public inquiry that followed in 1999 that has served as a catalyst for raising the profile of hate crime as a social and political problem deserving of serious attention in its own right. Whilst the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry focused on the issues of race and racism, the debate that followed served to draw attention to the experiences of other targets of hate motivated offending. This in turn has sparked significant interest amongst policy makers, academics and criminal justice practitioners in all forms of hate crime and in particular how the problem might best be responded to. The underlying purpose of this unit is therefore to explore the complexities of hate crime, the extent of our understanding of these complexities, and the implications for effectively responding to the hate crime `problem'. By exploring seven basic questions (what is hate crime? how much of it is there? who is involved or affected? where is it occurring? when is it occurring? why is it occurring? and, crucially, what if anything can we do to make the situation better?) this unit aims to provide students with a more holistic understanding of the phenomenon of hate crime. U24768 Intelligence Analysis The unit provides a comprehensive overview of development in different forms of intelligence analysis used in the public and private sectors. Student will gain a detailed understanding of the role of the intelligence analyst, their tradecraft and the theoretical foundations underpinning their profession. This will be enabled via consideration of the application of intelligence analysis to various forms of criminal offending. Finally, students will develop a critical appreciation of the different forms, benefits and potential weaknesses of intelligence analysis that may be deployed with an investigative team. 40% Presentation; 60% Report U26241 Murder investigation, key challenges This unit is designed to develop a critical understanding of the framework and the complexities within the criminal justice system of murder investigations. It will also develop the students understanding and knowledge of the issues within both the criminal justice system and society when murder investigations fail. The unit will include murder investigation from a number of countries. Each lecture a different murder investigation will be examined and analysed. 60% Essay; 40% Portfolio U23803 Wildlifer Crime: Threats and Response Wildlife crime has become a serious problem in the UK and overseas, as evidenced by the introduction of a police National Wildlife Crime Unit in Crime involving wildlife can take many forms, from the shooting of birds of prey, to the more serious and organised crimes of badger baiting and the illegal trade in endangered species, including rhino, elephants and tigers. This new unit examines crime types; the law; forensic evidence and investigation; tracking techniques (humans and animals); bone trauma and environmental pollution. Delivered through interactive lectures and facilitated by academics and guest speakers, there is a strong emphasis on practical exercises, including the examination of crime scenes. 20% Poster; 80% Essay U24089 Fundamentals of Forensic Inverstigation This unit provides the non-scientist with an introduction to investigation and forensic science. The focus is on how forensic science is used in practice and how it fits into the broader context of criminal investigations and within the criminal justice system. Students will be guided through the practical applications of crime science and forensic science techniques 20% Coursework; 80% Portfolio and will be asked to appraise and understand the probative value of different types of physical evidence. The objective is to give non-forensic science students the grounding in the key principles and study this fascinating and interesting field appreciating its application and impact on the criminal justice system. 3

U21005 Global, State and Corporate Security The unit Global, State and Corporate Security is grounded in the discipline of criminology, while offering a new approach to looking at crime problems. Instead, these are conceived as security concerns, many of which may today be seen as inevitable costs of living in an interconnected, globalised world. The unit is intended to offer students of criminology an introduction to a wider range of crime and security considerations, as well as security agencies and security strategies, than will typically be considered within criminological units. In this respect it will serve as a useful precursor to third year options relating to specialist security topics, which may include community safety, counter fraud, crime prevention, cybercrime, organised crime and policing, depending on the choices available. It will also raise awareness of related careers in the public and private sectors. In the respective topics we will consider what security means, and how security needs are being addressed, at different levels of analysis and policy implementation ranging from the international, national and community dimensions right through to that of the individual citizen. Included in the unit structure will be an introduction to the main agencies of security from a UK perspective, including the armed forces, intelligence agencies, the police and private security companies, and their functions and operating practices. For the unit assessments, you will be asked to imagine you are an analyst in a security agency or consultancy, and to research a security threat of your choice. You will first be asked to present an initial list and appraisal of your sources in the form of an annotated bibliography. Following this, you will develop your research in the form of a report, exploring the nature and key features of your chosen security threat, and prevailing strategies for its control. Previous student topics have addressed such diverse threats as money laundering, online child sexual exploitation, alcohol related violence, wildlife trafficking, maritime piracy, hate crime, domestic violence, genocide, pharmaceuticals corruption and pandemics. 30% Bibliography; 70% Report U21007 Youth Crime, Youth Justice It appears that young people commit the majority of crime. This is not a problem, which is specific to the UK. It is a worldwide phenomenon. However, this is a rather simplistic view of a complex issue. Whilst young people tend to commit specific types of `street' crime e.g., theft from the person, they are also predominantly a victim of crime. This unit is therefore concerned with the problem of what young people encounter as offenders and victims. U21003 Crimes of the powerful This unit examines forms of state crime and responses to them. The key themes embrace the theorising of state crimes, state crimes of commission, state crimes of omission and the international community's response. Areas examined encompass crimes against humanity (including genocide, war crimes) and state crimes against democracy, and state-corporate crime, contemporary slavery and trafficking humans. In consideration of the responses, attention will be paid to the contributions made by international judicial, state and inter-governmental, and global civil society actors in controlling state deviance. 40% Assingment; 60% Essay U25655 Penology and Prison This unit will provide students with an opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of key theories and contemporary perspectives surrounding penology. The unit considers the wider mechanisms of 'punishment and control' and how penal institutions are understood by individuals, communities, and societies, as responses to varieties of 'criminal' and 'deviant' behaviours. This unit will begin by examining the theoretical perspectives of punishment, considering the philosophies of punishment and sociology of prison. It will move on to critically discuss penal policy and penological trends, including mass incarceration and abolitionism. Additionally, the unit will evaluate the notion of punishment and issues relating to penal institutions, both on a national and international level. As a result, the unit incorporates a comparative analysis where students are encouraged to compare and contrast different jurisdictions and innovations from the UK, Europe, USA and beyond. Finally, the entire unit highlights contrasting ideals, which serve as an inclusionary and exclusionary ethos to the punishment of offenders in the criminal justice system. 4

U23805 Contemporary Terrorism and the Global Response Terrorism studies will be reviewed with criminological theory on pathways to terrorism and issues raised in researching the field. Rooted in the contemporary context, the Unit 50% Group Research; considers compares and contrasts the rise of terrorist jihadi violence up to the contemporary actions of ISIS, and the apparent attraction/lure of the ideological and operational context 50% Review of Syria and Iraq. In doing so we consider long-standing literature on radicalisation, sociological and psychological theories of individual and social motivation, and issues of gender identity and the role of women within terrorist organisations, and finally malevolent creativity and innovation in terrorist planning and attack. Students undertake a range of PEST analyses of globally and ideologically diverse forms of terrorist violence (nationalist, ideological, religiously motivated, single-issue) undertaken by terrorist groups. In the second part of the unit, the response to the threat of terrorism is framed by a focus on Pursuing and Preventing terrorism, to structure the consideration of effectiveness, proportionality, and impact on communities. In countering terrorism we explore terror management theory in explaining how heightened public fear and anxiety impacts upon state responses. Finally, the unit covers critical challenges of de-radicalisation in prison contexts; distinguishing terrorists from freedom-fighters; the role and the impact of social media on radicalisation and recruitment; and counter-narratives to ideologically challenge the justification of terrorist political violence. U22989 Crime, Exclusion and Mental Health This unit will critically explore the definitions of mental ill health and their relationships to crime and the criminal justice system and the provision of mental health support for offenders through legal, criminal justice and community arrangements. It will address a wide range of issues including a critical discussion of the implications for the criminal justice system of addiction to psychoactive substances being classified as a psychiatric disorder. This unit will be useful for those who are interested in the theory and practice of intervention with this group and those who may be considering employment which includes work with individuals passing through the criminal justice system (or a related field) who have mental health needs. The following themes will be addressed: historical and social context, the structures and processes currently in place including the legal context, the type and nature of mental disorder, explanations, treatment and intervention, the problem of dual diagnosis, managing risk, diversion, national and international debates and future developments. Relevant case studies, legal and ethical issues will be used throughout to demonstrate the problematic nature of managing mental disorder. It is intended that there will be a session delivered by a senior practitioner currently working in professional setting with offenders with mental disorder. 50% Assignment; 50% Analysis U21014 Forensic Psychology This unit will provide an insight into the arena of forensic psychology and its practical application to the real world. This unit adds to the grounding in psychological theory and 50% Coursework; 50% principles studies at Level 4 and 5, and enables the student to consider the relationship of the theories to real life criminal justice issues. Students will be introduced to key areas where Exam psychology has had an influence on investigation and the treatment of offenders, studying topics such as the cognitive interview and the role of psychology in prisons. Also included is a lecture by a senior police officer who takes the students through the investigation of a murder looking at how psychology and forensics helped him solve the case. U23804 Gender and Crime If one were to guess the first demographic characteristic of an offender, the first guess should be that the offender is male. Women commit fewer and less serious crimes than men. They desist from crime earlier and are less frequently reconvicted. The fact that crime is committed disproportionately by men is a fact that any theory of crime should fit. This unit will provide students with the opportunity to re-examine the criminal justice system through a gendered lens; exploring how crime, pathways to offending, victimisation, punishment, treatment, rehabilitation and our understanding of crime and the criminal are influenced by gender. Lectures will cover a range of subjects including gendered patterns of offending and victimisation, gendered experiences of the criminal justice system, gendered crime ( eg: domestic abuse, sexual offending, prostitution and the sex industry, honour crime), gendered experiences of working in the criminal justice system and theoretical frameworks that attempt to account for the gender differential in crime and criminology. This unit will enable students to critically analyse crime, criminology and the criminal justice system from a gendered perspective. U21016 Miscarriages of Justice This unit looks at various reasons why miscarriages of justice occur. It explores topics such as poor police investigations and case construction, issues arising from court procedures, the 50% Report; 50% Essay use of 'junk science' and questionable expert witnesses. The unit will also look at the major impact that advances in forensic science have had on the detection and prevention of miscarriages of justice, and it outlines the aftermath of a miscarriages of justice, i.e. the procedures available to investigate and prosecute those responsible for a miscarriage of justice. Furthermore, this unit includes comparative elements where miscarriages of justice, innocence issues and human rights in other jurisdictions such as the US and various European jurisdictions will be explored. 5

U21015 Treatment and Rehabilitation of Offenders This option introduces students to the contested concepts of the rehabilitation and treatment of offenders and will examine the effectiveness of contemporary attempts to treat and rehabilitate offenders in the community. Alternative paradigms for understanding the treatment and rehabilitation of offenders will be critically explored and the future direction of supervision in the community will be assessed U21153 Management of Criminal Investigations The particular emphasis in this unit is on the management of investigations into serious and organised crime. This includes analyses of investigative strategies, major incident procedures, of the application of forensic science and the management of intelligence across a range of offending behaviours. 60% Essay; 40% Group presentation U21000 Crime, Media and Culture This unit examines ways in which crime and criminals are represented through the media in its various forms. It looks at how we as criminologists respond to this through theoretical perspectives and research techniques. The unit will also explore these concepts by discussing examples of representation of different groups in society such as class, gender, children and young people and ethnic minorities in relation to crime. It will also investigate the portrayal of the main criminal justice agencies and will look at historical and contemporary case examples to investigate how crime is constructed in the media. In order to contest fictional representations of crime in the media, cultural criminology will also be considered to appreciate the reality of crime. 40% Essay, 30% Presentation, 30% Analysis U20996 Key issues in criminal justice Within England and Wales, criminal justice legislation, policy and organisation has changed significantly since the 1960s through to the contemporary period as a result of a range of key issues in criminal justice. This course is designed to provide the student with a clear framework within which they can appreciate the complexities and challenges within criminal justice processes, and develop critical analysis in criminal justice. U20995 Questioning Criminology The purpose of this unit is to examine various criticisms and challenges that have been made of criminology and the social sciences. This will involve critically considering the role criminology and the social sciences have had in engineering social order. The unit will explore accounts from critical social theory and sociological analysis of social control. This analysis will be considered in relation to social and cultural resistance and dissent against the imposition of control and social engineering by the state. This will involve examining social control from the perspective of marginal, oppressed and subjugated groups through their experience of injustice, discrimination and authoritarianism. This examination will be contextualised within historical overview of substantive intellectual and cultural challenges to state engineered notions of order. 40% Portfolio; 10% Coursework; 40% Portfolio; 10% Coursework U26327 Psychology and Criminal Justice The unit explores the ways in which psychology is interwoven into the criminal justice system. Students will consider key issues around psychology and law, the psychology of treatment and rehabilitation, and how psychology is embedded within criminal justice processes. 50% Coursework; 50% Exam 6
