"I feel that using the services & guidance that Share offered has expanded my horizons, taught me new skills, and more importantly expanded my own awareness of my inner self, and how I react to situations". I didn t have a life before Share, I was always thinking at ways to end it. Now, because of therapy I am thinking of ways in which to live it to the best of my ability... Thank you. Client Comments "'The journey travelled was often painful, having to see things I did not want to see and more importantly, accepting that, that was how it was". Now the journey has ended, for now I have become happier in myself, feel more confident and relaxed". Therapy is challenging & confronting, but I am benefiting from it. Therapy has given me a chance to find myself 'The smaller things in life that used to worry me, I no longer get uptight about". This period of therapy has been an opportunity for me to really confront lifelong issues with the supportive, patient, guiding expertise that Share offers. It has been invaluable for me and has truly made a path through difficulties which alone felt impenetrable... Thank you
Share aims to promote good mental health for the public benefit by the provision of psychotherapy at as low a cost as possible for those who are unable to afford it through lack of means or who are otherwise in need. This booklet provides informa on about the services we offer at Share. These currently include individual psychotherapy in a range of modali es, group psychotherapy and art therapy. Further informa on can also be found on our website. If there are things you need to know which are not covered in this booklet please contact us. All our contact details are on the cover of this booklet. Registra on process We accept either self-referrals or referrals from mental health and other professionals; e.g. GP's, psychiatrists and other mental health workers. If you wish to refer yourself you can do so either by phoning the office or ing. The office manager is normally available between 10:00am and 3:30pm Monday to Thursday. If you ring outside these mes you can leave your name and address on the answer machine and a Registra on Form will be sent to you. Similarly, if you your postal address a Registra on Form will be posted out. You can also download the registra on form, which includes an equal opportuni es monitoring sec on, and a GP referral form) from our website at Once you have returned your completed Registra on Form, and if applicable the GP referral form completed by your GP, we will in the 1st instance or if you don t have we will write to you with details of an assessment appointment; please see below. We are unable to see people who have consulted their GPs about their current problems, or who are under the care of the mental health services, unless a referral form is completed. We will send this for comple on on receipt of your applica on form if you have not enclosed it with your registra on form. 1
Informa on about individual psychotherapy Share offers individual psychotherapy across a range of clinical modali es, including art therapy, integra ve, personcentred and psychoanaly cally informed (psychodynamic) psychotherapy. Further informa on about these different forms of psychotherapy can be found on the Share website at If you require any addi onal informa on about the individual psychotherapy we offer please let us know. Who is psychotherapy most suitable for? Psychotherapy of the kind currently offered at Share is usually appropriate for individuals who; Are prepared to try working with a psychotherapist to explore the issues that are affec ng their life. Are open to the idea that the ways we look at things and think about things is connected to our experiences and affects our feelings and ac ons. Are willing to consider the possibility that they (you) are capable of making changes in their (your) life while s ll being consistent with your own values and beliefs. Are willing to try taking a risk by talking about yourself and your life and le ng someone else listen to you and accept you, even though doing so may some mes be upse ng. Do not expect an instant cure or solu on to their problems. 2
The assessment appointment As soon as possible a er receiving your completed registra on form we will arrange an assessment appointment. The aim of this appointment, which will be up to ninety minutes (1½hrs) long, is for you to come and talk about the problems you are experiencing and discuss how best to help you. If you have consulted your GP about your current problems we will ask them to fill in a referral form before offering an assessment appointment. Similarly, if you are under the care of the mental health services we require a referral form to be filled in indica ng how our help will fit in with your current care plan. During the assessment appointment, in addi on to discussing the problems for which you are seeking help, we also look at a couple of prac cal things; for example what level of contribu on to therapy will you pay and what availability you have for a regular therapy appointment. The wai ng list for assessment and regular therapy appointments Following your assessment appointment if we believe we are in a posi on to help, we will write to you to confirm that your name will go on our wai ng list along with the mes you are available. When an appointment, which meets your needs and matches your availability, becomes free we will write to you again with the offer of a regular appointment. The regular appointment stays the same every week, takes place on the same weekday, at the same me, with the same therapist. For obvious reasons we aim to keep the length of wait for assessment appointments and regular (weekly) therapy appointments as short as possible. Nevertheless, the length of me you may wait for a regular therapy appointment - which for individual psychotherapy lasts for fi y minutes - may vary considerably depending on your needs, availability and the length of the wai ng list. Please note, we charge for the assessment session whether or not a person decides to enter therapy. See page 6 informa on on our sliding scale of charges. 3
Group Psychotherapy Group analy c psychotherapy is a talking therapy that takes place in a group. Personal issues are explored in an atmosphere of developing trust and confiden ality. Through the rela onships within the group, members become aware of how past pa erns of behaviour may have blocked development and change. These pa erns of behaviour are usually repeated in the group. Exploring the blocks opens the way for understanding and change. How does group therapy work? The group consists of up to eight people in addi on to the group conductor. It meets at the same me every week for 1.5 hrs. Regular a endance is expected as this is really important in group therapy. Group therapy, like other therapies, can some mes feel uncomfortable. Talking about this helps to understand what is going on and where the discomfort comes from. Your role as a group member is to aim towards increasingly open verbal communica on of feelings and thoughts with other members and to reflect on your behaviour and that of others. Interac ons between group members are highly encouraged and provide par cipants with an opportunity to try out new ways of behaving. You will eventually learn to link the experiences in the group with problems outside and their possible origins in early life. The more you can par cipate in the above process, the greater the benefit. The therapist who is leading the group will be experienced in le ng the work of the group develop gradually as trust and safety grows, so you won't be thrown in at the deep end. 4
What will be expected of me when I start therapy? For psychotherapy to be helpful it is necessary for all clients to respect the following ground rules. To make a regular commitment to therapy and to a end each scheduled appointment If, for any reason, you are unable to a end an appointment early no fica on would be appreciated. To pay for all therapy sessions at the beginning of each calendar month To start and finish sessions on me. To respect all persons and property. And not to a end under the influence of alcohol or un-prescribed drugs. Addi onal informa on and guidance on the respec ve obliga ons of clients and Share may be found in the client agreement which you will be invited to agree and sign at your first regular appointment. Keeping us updated In order to make sure we can contact you, would you please make sure you inform us if you change your address, address and/or telephone number. If your situa on changes while you are on our wai ng list and you no longer wish for psychotherapy please let us know. Data protec on statement Any personal informa on you give to us will be processed in accordance with the UK Data Protec on Act Personal data will be stored in lockable paper-based systems for the legally required 6 years and any data held on a computer will be on a password-protected system. We will treat all your personal informa on as private and confiden al, except where disclosure is made at your request or with your consent or where we are required by law to disclose. 5
Confiden ality In all forms of psychotherapy the rela onship between therapist and client is based on trust. In prac ce, this means that what the client says will be treated as confiden al, although other health professional s involved in treatment - your GP, for instance may be informed of progress. Very occasionally it may be necessary to inform other people of things you have discussed or disclosed in therapy; if, for example, the therapist considers the client or another person may be at risk of harm. If you would like this eventuality to be explained in more detail please ask. Paying for individual therapy We use a sliding scale of charges to assess how much a person should pay per session for their therapy. The figures below are based on an individual s income a er tax, and they also apply to the assessment interview for all appointments between 8:30am and 16:00 (finish at 17:00). From 6th January 2016 we will be offering a limited number of appointments on a Wednesday between 17:00 and 20:00 (last appointment at 19:00). The charges for these appointments are listed below. Please note that all sessions, where the therapist is available, must be paid for as this me is booked for you and cannot be used by anyone else. Income Day me Wednesday evening 0-12K K K K K K Paying for Group Therapy The exploratory sessions will be the same price as weekly group fees 0-12K K K K K 25 41K+ 30 6
Contribu ons towards the cost of therapy are paid for at the first session of each month. Payment can be made either by cheque or cash, we are unable to accept debit/credit cards or to give change. If your circumstances change in a way that affects your contribu on to therapy, for example job loss, or alterna vely, acquisi on of capital, please let us know as this will affect the level of contribu on paid. If fees are paid on behalf of a client by Social Services or a professional body i.e. Solicitors, etc then the highest fee for each type of therapy, either for Sheffield Residents or Clients outside Sheffield will apply. Personal therapy where this is a requirement of a training course For those who are in counselling or psychotherapy training we can offer personal therapy where this is a requirement of their course. The cost for this differs from the sliding scales charges in this booklet and starts at 20 per session and rises to 40. There will be an opportunity to discuss what your level of contribu on will be at the assessment appointment. If you are interested in any of these please call the office and talk to one of our clinical staff. Accessibility Unfortunately Share does not have a level access, but we can provide a ramp from the car park to the pathway. There are three steps to the front door which cannot be avoided, but we are happy to give assistance with these. In order to provide our service to those less able we would be happy to see clients at a separate loca on, which would be arranged as the need arises. We have ground floor therapy rooms for people unable to nego ate stairs. Hearing Impairment - We have a portable induc on loop for use in any of our therapy rooms. This is designed to assist a person with a hearing aid to hear more clearly in a room by switching their hearing aid to the T posi on. Please advise us if you require this service. Toilets - These are on the first floor. Assistance Dogs - We welcome dogs, (those which have been trained to help disabled people live life more independently), throughout the building. Please advise us if you are bringing an assistance dog. If you have special needs please contact the office and we will do all we can to assist your visit to Share. 7
