Footprint Tracker: Supporting diary studies with lifelogging Rúben Gouveia Evangelos Karapanos 1

using diary studies to understand how technology is used in workplaces John Rieman, University of Colorado 2

l i a m d an Coffee.m? at 8a Par not eve s diary studies provide limited data about the situations on which participants report 3

what are diary studies limitations? Lifelogging as an alternative solution to diary studies diary taking can be disruptive Participants have to stop ongoing activities to write down diary entries 4

Using Photos, Audio and tangible objects to enhance diary studies Carter S., & Mankoff, J. provides richer information than diary studies however, participants can miss out important moments 5

Lifelogging Con$nuous capture of everyday lives through digital devices. no additional burden to participants minimizes the risk of missing out important moments 6

Footprint Tracker: capturing lifelogs Social context logging Location logging Sensecam 7

Footprint tracker: reviewing lifelogs 8

Field study with cues without cues cues captured through two tools no tools used by participants cues displayed in interface no cues in interface 9

Cues allowed participants to reconstruct their days with more detail Viewing my day with pictures is much more accurate than without these... Without pictures I would remember I was working and shopping, but not [what I was doing] in- between. without cues: 7.1 events per user, 42 minutes average each 274 TOTAL EVENTS ADDED with cues: 15.8 events per user, 16.3 minutes average each 10

Understanding the relevance of visual, location, temporal and contextual cues visual cues temporal cues location cues contextual cues 11

Visual cues provide rich information of daily activities images allowed me to see the surroundings of my day. From people to buildings, I was able to see everything. I could see my entire day through the images. 12

Visual cues caused confusion when lacking significant information I m not sure where I am. I can only see the steering wheel.there when are no people are they and I can t not see enough the location, that's why it makes it difficult for me 13

Visual cues caused confusion in 2 Repetetive behaviours behaviours situations with repetetive 11:00 here I was going to the university, I had a meeting with Professor John 14:00 what was I doing at the University again? There is something wrong in the pictures! ( ) oh that s right, this is actually the time when I met Professor John 14

Providing aditional context in confusing visual cues Feed-forward or backward, searching for additional information Oh, I wen t to get coffee change gaze towards other cues 15

Temporal cues allowed participants to infer upcoming activities I have a scheduled timetable I come to work everyday at 09:00 and leave at 18:00 Time helped me place myself in a certain activity, since I knew, for example that I came to work around 08:45 16

Location was inferred from pictures Location information wasn t very important to me because I was able to determine where I was through the photos. 17

Location cues attracted gaze when location wasn t visible in photos location was only useful when I was driving. I checked it to know where I was at a precise moment. It didn't help me remember anything, I just used it for curiosity 18

Social context cues lack novelty I didn t pay much attention to it since it s something I have access on a daily basis on my phone 19

Social context cues used to confirmation interactions yes, here I was calling my girlfriend. 20

conclusions continuous capture removes additional burden no moments are missed out Enhancing diary methods with lifelogging HOWEVER self-selecting what to capture may be more meaningful, remaining in memory for more time Sensecam is not completely unobstructive Feeling of being under surveillance and raises privacy concerns Participants avoid public locations Participants used the SenseCam to initiate social interactions 21

conclusions how can users navigate through their data? clustering algorithms data elimination complex algorithms are time consuming potentially delete important information 22

facilitate navitagion through lifelogs micro views: snippets of information that provide an overview of presence of lifeloggs 23

facilitate navitagion through lifelogs temporal views: supports awareness of the temporal order of events under recall 24

How can visual, location, temporal and contextual cues trigger memories of recent events? visual cues attracted the most visual attention starting point of participants recollections location cues rarely a focal point of recall location supports remembering through inference context cues Used to confirm inferences made through photos rarely a focal point of recall face to face encounters were more meaningful Resolve conflicting information inferred in photos temporal cues usefull for participants with defined habits 25

Wrapping it up inquired into the potential of lifelogging as an approach to increasing the unobtrusiveness and realism of diary studies. several challenges to address in order to establish lifelogging as a viable paradigm withing diary studies future work should focus on a direct comparison of self-selected and automatically captured media. 26
