Integrating Energy Psychology And Ericksonian Therapy For Trauma Robert Schwarz, PsyD, DCEP EP=? Energy Psychology is a family of focused and brief mind-body approaches to releasing stuck energy in the mind-body system that usually is the result of unresolved small t or big T trauma. 1

EP General Treatment Protocol First and foremost, create rapport, train client in procedure and establish appropriate expectation. A. Client Identifies a specific target and assigns a SUDS rating C. Assess client s new SUDS level and any additional data: feeling, image, sensation, etc. B. Client focuses non judgmental awareness on the target and activates energy points with or without cognitive reframes D. If SUDS is not 0 and/or there is new data, return to Step A (on new or original target) and repeat. Hypnosis, EP & the Mind Body Connec<on Pa=erns repeat on mul<ple levels. Two Way Communica<on Most mind- body people have a bias to one direc<on You can Run the System in any direc<on What is the Mind? The mind regulates the flow of Information and energy. - Dan Siegel, MD The Mind is Embodied and Interpersonal 3

What is the Mind? The Mind is an emergent, self organizing process that shapes how energy and informa<on move across <me. This aspect of mind is a natural emerging and self organizing dynamic process that arises as a fundamental property of the system of energy and informa<on flow that is created in both the body and in interac<ons with others and our environment. This emergent process arises from energy and informa<on flow and then also shapes energy and informa<on flow across <me. Daniel Siegel 2012 Why do people develop psychological problems? The functional flow of information and energy becomes dysfunctional. What is Effec<ve Psychotherapy? Shifts dysfunctional flow of information and energy (chaos/rigidity) toward functional flow and Integration Chaos Rigidity 4

First & Chief func<on = am I safe? 4. Vagal Breaking System(VBS) / arousal & recovery 5. VBS / HRV / Trauma / Bo=om - UP 6. Social Connec<on/Bonding/Safety 7. Prosody/tone - Vagus nerve and the hypno- voice Polyvagal theory Hyper Brief Summary 2 8. Safety & Danger is a felt sense pre- conscious/below the neocotrex 9. Affect regula<on & dysrgula<on is interpersonal 10. Two way communica<on: informa<on and influence Memory Reconsolida<on - 3 steps 1. Reac'vate. Re- trigger/re- evoke the target knowledge by presen<ng salient cues or contexts from the original learning. 2. Mismatch/unlock. create an experience that is at variance with the client s model and expecta<ons of how the world works. (unlocks synapses and renders memory circuits suscep<ble to being updated by new learning). 3. Erase or revise via new learning. create a new experience that contradicts (for erasing) or supplements (for revising) the labile target knowledge. (This new learning experience may be the same as or different from the experience used for mismatch in step 2; if it is the same, step 3 consists of repe<<ons of step 2) (Ecker, Ticic and Hulley, 2013) 6

Trauma Reassocia've Condi'oning Quick Guide 1) Educate the pa'ent about the ra'onale for the procedure 2) Calibrate the Trauma SoC. 3a) Elicit a descrip'on of a resourceful state that the pa<ent needs now so that dealing with the memory of the trauma would not be trauma<c 3b Elicit the Resource SoC. 3c) Create Anchors to Stabilize the Resource State. Physical anchor, auditory anchor 4) Establish a doubly dissociated point of view. Trauma Reassocia've Condi'oning Quick Guide 5) Re- Condi'on the SoC s linked to the trauma. Language :Then/ Now current date/old date current self watching current self / watching younger self on the screen Re- valuing the self:. pa<ent walk down to the movie screen. bring the younger self off the screen, or just talk to the younger self on the screen. Instruct the pa'ent to tell the younger self whatever, s/he needs for healing". 7) Re- integra'on. Once the pa<ent is finished, have pa<ent bring the younger self off the screen and sit back down in the chair with the here and now self. Instruct the pa<ent to imagine bringing the younger part inside the pa<ent. Very Basic EFT Step 1 Focus on Problem and rate 0-10 SUDS Step 2 The set up statement Tap KC & say 3 X Even though I I deeply and completely Accept myself. Step 3 Tap Points 10 times each ToH- > EB- > SE- > UE- > UN- > CH - > CB- >U Aà Step 4 Go back to Step 1: Re-assess if suds not 0 Follow the data get more specific 8

More Advanced EFT Check for aspects Deconstruct things back to short specific events I am not loveable Father yelling at age 6 at Little league Over hearing Parents fight About him Kids laughing At presentation Girl rejecting Him You? with scorn Tes9ng the work Polyvagal informed hypno- energy trance with a dash of memory reconsolida<on Imagine an warm friendly energy ball - color (pa<ent associates with safety centered somewhere in the abdomen (tummy) Radiates warmth, comfort, safety, relaxa<on No<ce breathing slows & deepens as if you are breathing in this feeling. Allow The color & comfort to move up into your heart. No<ce how your heart rate can slow since your body senses that you are safe Feel/Sense the warmth/safety- as if the the energy is telling you in the most relaxed voice you can imagine you are safe. It may seem to you that the very quality of that voice is melodic like an angel s voice would sound. Polyvagal informed hypno- energy trance with a dash of memory reconsolida<on Perhaps you did not realize that you can create these internal feelings of safety easily Perhaps you did not realize that these feelings can live in your body and arise a But now you do! Is that not wonderful And your UCS can memorize this process so that it can automa<cally bring it back whenever you need. PHS for automa<c return and/or conscious access 9
