2 SECTION 1 READING/VIEWING, SHT ANSWERS PART E 46 Youth Matters is an example of a pun. Explain the TWO different meanings. ( marks) One mark for each meaning. To gain two marks the two meanings must be distinctly different One meaning for matters as a noun meaning: - issues - concerns - material - subject - events One meaning for matters as a verb meaning: - is important - is significant - is valued - is cared about - is respected - counts 47 Which TWO language techniques are used to engage the audience in Wanna be heard? Sussing out the facts? Got something to say?? ( marks) One mark will be allocated for each distinct and correct technique: - use of questions/invitation - colloquial language/conversational/slang - repetition of questions/ideas - truncated/abbreviated sentence structure - alliteration/sibilance

( marks) One mark for each distinct feature of the visual design related to the meaning Gender - the symbols for male and female are used to show gender - the balance beam or see-saw is used to show the struggle for equality Social justice - the appearance of the person as a stereotypical teenager/adolescent focuses on the issue of youth - the barbed wire and the brick wall represent restrictions or limitations Multiculturalism - the different colours of the cut out people represent different races - the joining of hands represents unity and togetherness - the image of the world shows that it is worldwide issue Aboriginality - the flag is the Aboriginal flag to show that the issue is Aboriginality - the joined black and white hands shows equity, cooperation or reconciliation 49 (a) According to the diagram, which is the smallest group in Australia s Population Profile? (1 mark) The correct answer for one mark is New Zealand-born 1 (b) Describe TWO visual techniques used in the diagram to represent Australia s Population Profile. ( marks) One mark for each distinct technique Technique - use of different colours showing each group - use of the shape of the diagram as a person relating to population - the different proportions of the body to show the percentages - numerical labels placed down the side indicating size of groups - cultural/racial categories placed down the side - bold heading placed across the top 3

( marks) One mark is to be allocated for a demonstrated understanding of the written text it must show some interpretation of the whole or part of the text that could relate to the image One mark could be allocated to a feature of the image that could be related to the text - the multicultural nature of diverse backgrounds of the people - the fact that they are smiling at each other showing happiness/togetherness - the fact that they came together to form the shape of Australia A second mark is to be awarded if a valid link or relationship is drawn between the above 51 Choose EITHER The Petition Brothers and Sisters to answer the following questions. (a) What is the message of the piece of writing? (1 mark) One mark given for interpreting a valid message from one of the pieces of writing. Giving a key quote is acceptable.
