A Lacanian Psychoanalytic Diagnostic and Clinical Approach to the Treatment of Paraphilia at a Forensic Outpatient Setting: A Case Study and Exegetical Method Abstract: The work of Jacques Lacan ( ) provided clinicians with a diagnostic system based on a patient s ontological structural position in relation to Others, language,

4 4 the unconscious, the law, and jouissance. Correspondingly, Lacan s three main diagnostic structures of psychosis, perversion, and neurosis suggest different stances the therapist should take in order to be helpful. Of the three, perversion remains by far the least understood and least discussed. In this dissertation, I strive to make Lacan s perverse structure and, by extension, his diagnostic system not only comprehensible to psychotherapists and psychoanalysts alike, but indispensable. I elucidate perversion by way of two main methods: qualitative clinical case study and hermeneutic readings of Lacan s work on perversion. This methodology allows for contributions to the theoretical literature on perversion as well as to the clinical field. September 2003 May 2004 Primary Investigator: Honors Thesis Bryn Mawr University and Haverford College Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania Title: Is Three a Crowd? Cross-Sex Friendships, Romantic Relationships, and Jealousy Abstract: I sought to assess the ramifications (e.g., jealousy) of both partners in a heterosexual romantic relationship having a cross-sex friend, and the role that a cross-sex friend plays for a romantic partner. Fifty-three participants completed an online questionnaire on one of the computers in the college psychology lab. The survey included several different types of scales that assessed the perceived quality of the romantic relationship, the cross-sex friendship, and the participant s partner s cross-sex friendship. It also included two jealousy scales and a measure of attraction. Fourteen hypotheses were formulated. Among the implications of the results was the suggestion that cross-sex friends are perceived as potential alternatives to the romantic partner. I analyzed, using SPSS, 180 client files containing complete psychodiagnostic assessments. Assessment of Rorschach dependency measures in female inpatients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Journal of Personality Assessment, 85, Abstract: The psychometric properties and predictive validity of the Dependency Index (DI; Hilsenroth & Bornstein, 2002) and the Rorschach Oral Dependency Scale (ROD; Masling, Rabie, & Blondheim, 1967) were examined to determine if these implicit measures of dependency predict observable attachment-seeking behavior in 66 female inpatients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Results indicate that both scales produce excellent reliability estimates. The DI and ROD yield adequate base rates, and the distributions of scores approximate normal distributions. The DI was predictive

5 5 of nursing staff observation of positive attachment/treatment compliance (r =.28, p =.02) but not excessive isolation. By contrast, the ROD predicted positive attachment/treatment compliance (r =.38, p =.002) and excessive isolation (r = -.35, p =.004). Texture responses predicted excessive isolation (r = -.25, p =.05). Discriminant validity was supported when neither dependency measure predicted hostile interactions or selfdestructive behaviors. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that the ROD demonstrated incremental validity over the DI and select Comprehensive System (Exner, 1993) variables associated with dependency.
