1 CapLab Cognitive and affective psychophysiology. Topics include psychological diagnosis, contributions of personality to mental illness, mechanisms of risk (neuroimaging and genetics), and development of new psychotherapies. Focus on bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in patients; depression in adolescents; PTSD and other anxiety disorders in responders to 9/11 attacks. Duties: Various high-level tasks. First opportunity is to conduct clinical interviews with psychiatric patients or 9/11 responders or adolescent girls. These interviews consist of a series of written questions, but they require clinical skills, which a student can acquire after a few weeks of training. Second opportunity is to conduct cognitive testing after an in-depth training. Third opportunity is to assist with investigation of biological predictors of mental illness (genes, neural markers, and stress hormons). Fourth opportunity is to assist with randomized clinical trail on psychotherapy for 9/11 responders. All work is supervised by Dr. Kotov and senior members of his lab. Students get ample training to succeed in these tasks. Opportunities for independent projects are also available. How do we inhibit emotional distractors and remain task-focused? How does expectation of threat influence our perception and attention? Duties: Developing stimuli for experiments, recruiting and running subjects through tasks in the lab and assisting in running subjects during fmri, future lab research also involves using olfactory stimuli (odors) so RAs will also get experience using olfactory and visual stimuli in their research. Lab- and community-based descriptive and intervention research on understanding how the capacity for social connection develops, and on treatments to improve it. This includes, but is not limited to: 1) community outreach, psychopathology. Studies assess collaborating with groups that focus on peer-victimization issues, brain function (fmri), eye movement, recruitment, and conducting clinically oriented interviews; 2) interfacing behavior, and affective responding with participants while acquiring fmri, eye-tracking, and self-report data, during peer-based experiences. We and conducting subsequent analysis; 3) developing stimuli for aim to isolate response patterns that experiments, writing scripts for stimulus presentation and data capture, characterize normative development, and improving on current analytic tools used to interpret data.
