1 Benjamin J. Clark, Ph.D. Department of Psychology University of New Mexico (505) Albuquerque, NM, POSITIONS AND AFFILIATIONS Current Positions Present Assistant Professor of Psychology University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A. Previous Positions Postdoctoral Research Associate Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada (Mentor: Dr. Bruce L. McNaughton) 2012 Visiting Scientist NeuroElectronics Research Flanders, Campus Imec, Leuven, Belgium EDUCATION Ph.D. Psychological and Brain Sciences Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH, USA (Mentor: Dr. Jeffrey S. Taube) B.Sc. Neuroscience (Honours, Great distinction) University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, AB, Canada (Mentor: Dr. Ian Q. Whishaw) RESEARCH INTERESTS Studies in my laboratory are aimed at better understanding the circuit level mechanisms underlying how the mammalian brain generates our internal sense of spatial orientation, with particular emphasis on a class of limbic system and hippocampal neurons that behave much like a neural map and compass, called place cells, grid cells, and head direction cells. A broad aim of my research program is to understand the structural and functional loss in these spatial systems in Alzheimer s disease and after prenatal alcohol exposure. To address these goals, I use a combination of techniques to map the functional connectivity of neural circuits including high-density electrophysiology recordings in behaving rodents, and the combined use of fluorescent neuroanatomical tracing and immediate early gene expression to identify neural activity and plasticity within circuits during behaviorally relevant events.
