2 Grade Boundary Low Excellence 1 The correct and full origins have been given for the Latin words in the acronym ASICS. Particular points are expanded on by translating the Latin and recognising that the use of Latin crosses international boundaries.thorough understanding is demonstrated by quoting Juvenal s original phrase which inspired this brand nameand expanding on the thought behind that and the way the company has taken it into consideration. The connection with the modern world is clearly shown by linking the meaning of the Latin with the company s products and implied interest in both physical and mental health. If the student had not linked the acronym to the company s desired message that a healthy mind and spirit are also important the work would have reached low Excellence.

4 Grade Boundary High Merit 2 Clear understanding is demonstrated by giving the origin of the words in the Latin motto albeit with an error (accepi). Particular points are expanded on, e.g the various meanings of the Latin verbs and the fact that two imperatives have been used. The student explains that lumen is used in this motto to represent knowledge or power, rather than brightness and demonstrates that it is a suitable motto for a school. The work does not reach Excellence because there is no example of or reference to a use in Latin of the Latin words.

6 Grade Boundary Low Merit 3 Clear understanding is demonstrated by a literal translation of the Latin motto and the origin of luce. The particular point that luce here is not to be understood as daylight but more as life or power is expanded on and there is a further implication that living honestly will lead to more power in life. If the origin of veritatis had also been given, and another meaning of lux explored this work would have achieved a solid Merit.

8 Grade Boundary High Achieved 4 The origin of the brand name Optimum is given. Understanding is demonstrated by explaining that customers want the best for their pets and that cats are picky animals, only wanting the best.

10 Grade Boundary Low Achieved 5 The origin of the words in the motto is not given although a translation is supplied. However, the connection to the modern world is clear an insurance company needs to be able to reassure clients that it is trustworthy and the further comment that the company shows that it is smart by using Latin enables the student to gain a Low Achieved.

12 Grade Boundary High Not Achieved 6 The origin of the words in the phrase is not given, although there is an English translation. The use of the phrase in the modern world is not clearly explained. The work could reach Achieved if the origin of the words in the phrase were given and a reason for a post mortem in the modern world given.
