Exemplar for internal assessment resource Mathematics and Statistics 1.1B for Achievement Standard 91026! Exemplar for Internal Assessment Resource Mathematics and Statistics Level 1 Resource title: Carbon Credits This exemplar supports assessment against: Achievement Standard Apply Numeric Reasoning in Solving Problems Expected responses The moderators have developed expected student response from a wide variety of sources. Date version published by Ministry of Education December 2010 To support internal assessment from 2011 Crown 2010
Exemplar for internal assessment resource Mathematics and Statistics 1.1B for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: Low Excellence 1. There is evidence of extended abstract thinking in devising a strategy to investigate the minimum number of trees by basing calculations on a minimum crowd size. 2. Correct mathematical statements and the communication of mathematical insight are both demonstrated throughout the task Crown 2010

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Mathematics and Statistics 1.1B for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Merit 3. There is evidence of relational thinking in selecting and carrying out a logical sequence of steps to establish a correct number of trees. Findings have been related to the context and appropriate mathematical statements have been used to communicate thinking. 4. While the final answer has been rounded down this does not show sufficient insight relating to the minimum number of trees. For the award of Excellence the solution of the problem needs to incorporate the minimum crowd size. Crown 2010

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Mathematics and Statistics 1.1B for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: Low Merit 5. The number of people buying green days is incorrect but the following calculations are consistent. It is for this reason the appropriate classification is low Merit. 6. There is evidence of relational thinking in selecting and carrying out logical sequence of steps to establish a consistent number of trees. Findings have been related to the context and appropriate mathematical statements have been used to communicate thinking. Crown 2010

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Mathematics and Statistics 1.1B for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Achieved 7. The trial task (Carbon Offsets) which was used for this exemplar differed from the current website task (Carbon Credits). 8. Correctly finds a percentage of a quantity. 9. Correctly calculates fractions of a quantity. 10. Correctly calculates the number of trees. 11. A logical sequence of steps has been carried out but findings are not adequately related to the context or appropriately communicated because the numeric values given for the number of offsets, money spent on the offsets and the number of trees are not sensible. The lack of sensible rounding in the number of trees does not provide sufficient evidence for either of the Merit requirements, relating findings to a context or communicating thinking. Crown 2010

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Mathematics and Statistics 1.1B for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: Low Achieved 12. The trial task (Carbon Offsets) which was used for this exemplar differed from the current website task (Carbon Credits). 13. The communication ( carbon offsets should be a number of people) and working ( 17,00 ) lack accuracy. The percentage calculation is consistent with the people. 14. Correctly calculates fractions of a quantity. 15. Correctly calculates the total dollar value using $1.34 per carbon offset. 16. The student has provided evidence of applying numeric reasoning using a range of methods (at least three). The demonstration of knowledge of number concepts and terms and communicating solutions lacks accuracy and this is the reason for the classification of Low Achieved. Crown 2010

Exemplar for internal assessment resource Mathematics and Statistics 1.1B for Achievement Standard Grade Boundary: High Not Achieved 17. The trial task (Carbon Offsets) which was used for this exemplar differed from the current website task (Carbon Credits). 18. Correctly finds a percentage of a quantity. 19. Correctly calculates fractions of a quantity. 20. Calculation of the dollar value is incomplete. 21. For Achieved Apply numeric reasoning requires using a range of methods and Explanatory Note 4 (EN4) of the standard indicates that a range of methods is at least three different methods. The student has not achieved because there is evidence of the use of only two methods Crown 2010
