1 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Science 1.2B for Achievement Standard Exemplar for Internal Assessment Resource Science Level 1 Resource title: Are Biomags Dangerous? This exemplar supports assessment against: Achievement Standard Investigate the Implication of Electricity and Magnetism in Everyday Life Grade exemplar The moderators have found generic work suitable to exemplify the grades but may not match an A or B assessment resource. Date version published by Ministry of Education December 2010 To support internal assessment from 2011 Crown 2010

2 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Science 1.2B for Achievement Standard Commentary Standards 90941, and are the same apart from the context in which they are carried out. Evidence for each of these standards can be either primary or secondary (or both). The following scripts are all for evidence that is secondary. All these tasks require the collection of secondary evidence. Evidence for any one task exemplifies what is required for all three (Science 90941, Science 90942, Science 90943) Crown 2010

3 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Science 1.2B for Achievement Standard Therapy The report consists of a number of statements. Most of the statements make a medical claim that relates to a scientific process. On its own, a scientific process, regardless of its accuracy or otherwise, provides no evidence towards the achievement of the standard because the scientific theory that governs the process has not been defined nor has it been explained. As none of the medical claims in the report have been supported by scientific theory Achievement cannot be awarded. Grade Boundary: Not Achieved 1. There is no description (evidence towards achievement) of what make a cell charged and what positive and negative poles are. For Merit there must be an attempt to explain how a magnetic pole can manipulate electrical charge. 2. The scientific process that is likely to cause damage must be described (evidence towards achievement). Any science theory that governs this process must also be described. If it has already been described then a reference should be made to the description. A scientific explanation should be given of how different placements of the magnet can have different effects. Particular stress should be placed on the placement of positive pole. 3. If there is a claim that research has proved a claim that has been made there must be a reference (evidence towards achievement) somewhere in the report that states how this research can be assessed. 4. The scientific process that is likely to cause healing must be described (evidence towards achievement). Any science theory that governs this process must also be described. If it has already been described then a reference should be made to the description. A scientific explanation of how a negative pole can bring about the healing processes that have been described must be given. 5. The conclusions that are reached cannot be considered (for achievement) unless they are based on scientific information. The conclusions that are reached should each be explained using scientific theory. Other relevant aspects of the same science could also be considered. Eg we are exposed to the Earth s magnetic field at all times how strong is this compared to the field from the magnets that are used for healing? Crown 2010

4 Exemplar for internal assessment resource Science 1.2B for Achievement Standard This evidence is taken from a report that looked at the effect of wearing a magnetic bracelet to alleviate arthritic pain. 6. The standard requires the evidence to be based on the science of electricity and magnetism. Although this statement appears to be well researched, well written, and with a well reasoned, logical argument, there is no science in it all so is not the type of evidence that can be considered for this standard. 7. There needs to be a definition of how (achievement) and why (merit) a magnetic field can affect a nerve impulse. A comparison between the strength of the magnetic field of the bracelet and the magnetic fields likely to be experienced in everyday life would have provided a platform for an evaluation of the palliative effect of a magnetic bracelet.
