1 HDFS 616P Systemic and Relational Perspectives on Psychopathology i Spring, 2011 Instructor: Abbie Winter, LMFT Telephone: (563) awinter@iastate.edu Class Time: Wednesdays 9:00-10:50 Class Room: Palmer 0333 Required Reading: Reading Packet available from instructor. Purpose: This course is designed as a graduate seminar to supplement material taught in PSYCH 561: Psychopathology and Behavior Deviations. The purpose of HDFS 616 is to provide systemic and relational perspectives for the DSM-IV, which is the primary classification system for psychopathology in use today. A biopsychosocial and systemic framework will be utilized to conceptualize and understand mental illness. Material about physical health and illness will also be introduced. Course Objectives: As a graduate seminar, all class members will contribute to the teaching and learning process. After completing this course, students should: 1. Be sensitive to the role of culture, ethnicity, and race in the assessment and treatment of mental disorders 2. Be familiar with models of relational diagnoses, as well as biopsychosocial and systemic ways of conceptualizing the interaction between individual and relational diagnoses. 3. Be able to apply systemic treatment modalities to specific disorders. 4. Become familiar with empirically supported treatments for a variety of disorders Course Requirements: 1. Complete all assigned readings prior to class; attend and participate in class. A grade will be assigned for class participation that will be based, in part, on class attendance. Come prepared to each class with 3 questions/discussion points. 2. Since we will all participate in both the teaching and learning process, each student will complete 2 summaries of material from the reading packet that will be shared with class participants. The person who developed the summary will facilitate class discussion and provide a written summary to class participants of the reading on the assigned date. Class discussions will be 25 minutes per article. 3. Complete a research paper that summarizes the literature on empirically supported treatment(s) for a particular disorder. 4. Present material from your research paper with the class in a 25-minute presentation. Grading: Grading will be based on the number of points you earn out of a total of 300 total possible points (50 points per reading summary/class facilitation points for research paper + 50 points for class presentation of research paper + 50 points for class participation). There will be a ten point per day deduction for assignments that are turned in late.

3 Research Paper You will select a disorder and then review the literature to identify those treatments that have empirical support. You will organize this material in a document that (a) briefly describes the disorder and its incidence/prevalence; (b) discusses variation in the incidence/prevalence and presentation of this disorder relative to race, ethnicity, gender, etc.; (c) overviews the treatments that are empirically supported (both nonsystemic and systemic) and their key components and indications/contraindications, including the degree to which these treatments have been demonstrated to be effective with a diverse range of clients; (d) lists the clinical implications of this information; and (e) identifies areas for future research. Please have the topic of your research paper approved by your instructor prior to beginning. Possible Topics*: Anxiety Disorders (e.g., Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) Somatoform and Dissociative Disorders Mood Disorders (e.g., Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Suicide) Personality Disorders (e.g., Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder, Schizotypl Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Avoidant Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder). Disorders Related to Alcoholism or Substance Abuse Schizophrenia Emotional and Behavioral Disorders of Childhood and Adolescence (e.g., Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Conduct Disorders, Social Withdrawal, Depression in Childhood and Adolescence, Eating Disorders.) *Sexual Disorders and Sexual Dysfunctions will not be accepted as research topics as these subjects are covered extensively in HDFS 586: Sex Therapy.
