6 About the Presenter: Mark Brown, EdD, has been the Executive Director of Friends of Children of Walla Walla, a mentoring organization serving 130 matches in the Walla Walla Valley, for the past four years. Prior to moving to Eastern Washington, he served as the Director of a mental health clinic for children and families and as the Associate Director for emergency services for Hopelink in Bellevue, WA. Mark has a Masters degree in Psychology and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. Together with Teri Barila, supported through funding by the Gates Foundation, he has been working on the Children s Resilience Initiative for the past three years. 7 About the Presenter: Teri Barila, MS, is coordinator of the Walla Walla County Community Network, part of the Washington State Family Policy Council system. Together, this family-community-state partnership reduces expensive social problems by involving each community in finding its own unique pathway to thriving families. Building community capacity is a key element of the Network s mission, and we are bringing awareness of the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences as the major determinant of adult- and public- health to our community through the Children s Resilience Initiative. Teri has a Masters of Science in Fisheries Management and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. The effects of maltreatment correspond to the region and/or function that is developing at the time of maltreatment. GENDER Although both boys & girls are affected by maltreatment the effects of sexual abuse are more profound in girls while the effects of neglect are more profound in boys. TYPE OF ABUSE Different types of maltreatment activate different processes that shape the brain, such as chemicals & hormones, electrical activity, cell growth, & specialization of cells. 22 ACES ARE HIGHLY INTERRELATED, SELF-PERPETUATING, & HAVE A CUMULATIVE STRESSOR EFFECT The number of different categories of ACEs (ACE score) was found to determine health outcomes, not the intensity or frequency of a single category. The evidence suggests that ACEs are a causal agent for many health challenges. Without interruption, ACEs escalate across generations. You mean this lasts for 18 years??!! Will I ever sleep a full night again? Help!! Tip #1. Self care is one of the most important things for your baby and for yourself. Remember how the airline host directs you to put your oxygen mask on first, then your child s? You must be able to care for yourself first, in order to care for your child. Tip #2. The year following a child s birth is recognized to be stressful for parents and their relationship. In fact, a leading marital therapist says that satisfaction with each plummets during this time due to all the new demands. It is very important to know this is a NATURAL phase that parents go through, and men and women respond differently! What makes it work is TALKING to each other - and LISTENING! Tip #3. Perhaps the most important thing you can do as a parent is to provide consistent, direct interaction with your child. This is called attachment and it is essential to a baby s development. You can t spoil a baby with too much love! Play, sing, dance, clap, wiggle; it all builds that bond between you and baby.
