What is Self-Care? Self-Care 101: A Guide to Nourish & Flourish Team You Author: Shelley Hunter- Hillesheim Definition: Continuous commitment to the fundamental needs that center a person s entire being
What is Self-Care? Love yourself first, and everything else falls in line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world. ~ Lucille Ball
What is Self-Care? It s more than Just being conscious of how you treat yourself Pampering yourself Taking care of yourself in meaningful, fulfilling, energy-renewing ways Become a compass for how you express yourself & how you feel about yourself
What Self-Care is NOT selfish or indulgent behavior an action item to-do list journey to an end goal a regularly scheduled appointment on your calendar
Team YOU Idea that we each have the power to create the support system we need, our own personal well-being team Work begins with YOU, but many people in your life play a critical role Team YOU recognizes the team effort
Team YOU We cannot give to anyone what we do not have within ourselves By giving yourself more, you are able to give more It s filling your cup first & then offering to others from the overflow
Self-Care is Intentional actions you take to care for your Physical Mental Emotional Spiritual well-being
Importance of Self-Care Making yourself a priority sets you up to be more fully present in all aspects of your life Creates a ripple effect of goodness for every single person that is impacted by your presence Heart of self-care is self-love
Self-Love Quiz You are quick to criticize yourself. You don t take care of your body the way you d like because other things are more important. You place other people s needs above your own so often that you are worn down & depleted. You seem to lave a lot of crises in your life.
Self-Love Quiz You spend sleepless nights replaying dramas that you wish you d handled differently, inwardly beating yourself up over them. You tend to make your emotional pain worse by turning to addictions as the way to soothe. Your inner voice has a way of speaking to you in a negative way.
Self-Care & Self-Love is being honest with yourself telling yourself the truth with love & kindness a willingness to see things differently forgiving yourself & forgiving others not having to be right all of the time
Self-Care & Self-Love is means letting yourself off the hook if you ve tried your best & things didn t turn out exactly as planned you don t have to be better or stronger than anyone else you get to be perfectly imperfect version of you at all times
Why is Self-Care so hard? Today s society is in a constant state of being stressed out! Top 10 most stressed out states: 1) Alabama 2) Louisiana 3) Mississippi 4) West Virginia 5) Kentucky 6) New Mexico 7) Nevada 8) Georgia 9) Tennessee 10) Arkansas
Why is Self-Care so hard? Constant overload of information We re connected 24/7 Too much to do at work Too much to do at home Less quality & hours of sleep Physically moving less Jobs, relationships, children, travel, money, health concerns
Self-Awareness Exercise List as many obstacles you can think of that prevent you from taking care of yourself Time constraints Family obligations Workload Lack of desire
When Self-Care is MIA cranky depressed too sensitive lose perspective make snap judgments nagging physical ailments difficulty sleeping loss of energy feel anxious feel stressed overwhelmed lack joy & passion relationships suffer don t thrive at work
Self-Care Assessment Circle of Self-Care Tool Place a dot on the line in each self-care category to indicate your level of satisfaction with each area. Dot towards the center of the circle= less satisfied Dot towards the perimeter= more satisfied Connect the dots to see your Circle of Self-Care
Starting your Self-Care Journey What happens next? Start building Team YOU What is your WHY? Self-care is a choice Be a pioneer of your future, not a prisoner of your past! Give yourself permission to take care of yourself
Healthy boundaries Limits set around our needs so there is a clear message to others & ourselves about how to honor those needs Protect you & help you connect with your true self Should be clear, firm and also flexible
Signs Your Boundaries Need Adjusting You feel unable to say no You feel responsible for others emotions Your energy is drained by others or circumstances to the point you neglect your own needs You are overly sensitive to criticism
Signs Your Boundaries Need Adjusting You people-please You are unable to make decisions You believe that your happiness depends on others You take care of others needs but not your own Others opinions are more important than your own
Signs Your Boundaries Need Adjusting You have difficulty asking for what you want or need You go along with others rather than what you want You are not sure what you really feel You take on the moods/emotions of others around you
Tips for Healthy Boundary Setting Know yourself Be flexible Give permission to put yourself first Don t judge Learn to say NO Look for people or situations that energize or drain you
Journey to Self-Care Ditch the diet Stay hydrated drink more water Exercise Take care of your health don t skip those regular checkups
Journey to Self-Care Clear the clutter
Journey to Self-Care Power of play it s not just for kids
Journey to Self-Care Get enough good sleep Practice meditation Learn to rest make the most of downtime Practice yoga Create a purposeful pause turn off all distractions & enjoy the silence Practice mindfulness
Journey to Self-Care Live in gratitude Say thank you Keep a gratitude journal Use visual cues to remind that remind you to be grateful Set up a gratitude challenge
Journey to Self-Care Foster genuine connections with people Nourish relationships Reach out and not just when it s a special occasion Be open to new connections
Journey to Self-Care Self-expression exercises the muscles of your inner creative energy Do what you love, love what you do Find a hobby Avoid zoning out...watching TV, surfing the internet, social media Acts of service
Self-Care Challenge Identify 3 self-care behaviors you will commit to doing or improving over the next 90 days Clarify your goals Find an accountability partner Start taking action today
