He is currently a professor of clinical family medicine and director of behavioral sciences at LSU Health Sciences Center at Monroe. Before teaching at LSU Medical School he spent ten years in private practice and was a full time assistant professor of counselor education at ULM. He and Dr. Harper Gaushell were the authors of the current Masters of Art degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at ULM. He has coauthored a bestselling book with his father titled: How to Live with Your children and Like Them. He and his wife, Cindy, have been
2 married for 39 years. They are the parents of five children and the grandparents of twelve grandchildren. His current passion is woodworking. He loves making mantle clocks and grandfather clocks. This presentation will offer several techniques when using Direct Therapy with clients. The importance of when to use direct therapy and when not to use it will be discussed in detail. Some of the methods to be discussed will include: how to use Socratic Questions; how to present Choices with obvious outcomes to the clients; teaching clients how to use Reframing Techniques; and when to use Direct Advice. Finally, direct therapy will be compared and contrasted with client centered therapy, psychotherapy, and emotive therapy. 1. Review the working definition of Direct Therapy. 2. Understand the uses of direct therapy. 3. Compare and contrast Direct Therapy with Client Centered Therapy, Psychotherapy and Emotive Therapy. 4. Learn how to use the Socratic Question when doing therapy. 5. Identify situations where Reframing Technique can be used. 6. Demonstrate how to present Choices with obvious outcomes to clients. Ray, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Fellow and former member of the MRI Brief Therapy Center and former Director of the Mental Research Institute (MRI), in Palo Alto, CA. At the encouragement of John Weakland in 1987 Dr. Ray founded the Don D. Jackson Archive. He serves as Spyker Endowed Chair and Professor of Family System Theory in the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) Marriage and Family Therapy and Systemic Studies Programs. Dr. Ray conducts training internationally on a variety of topics including Systemic / Constructivist
3 Theory and Therapy with a wide range of behavioral and emotional problems, as well as lecturing on the pioneering work of Don D. Jackson, MD, Gregory Bateson's Palo Alto Research Group, and contributions to Interactional Theory, constructivism, and Brief Therapy by Paul Watzlawick, PhD, John Weakland, Ch.E., and Richard Fisch, MD. Research interests include theory construction, application of Communication / Interactional Theory in therapy; supervision and teaching therapy skills; effective and efficient practice of interaction focused therapy; study of audio and film recordings of master therapists, among other topics. Dr. Ray is author or co-author of more than 100 journal articles, book chapters, and nine books, published in multiple languages. Books include Don D. Jackson, Selected Essays from the Dawn of an Era; Don D. Jackson, Interactional Theory in the practice of Therapy, selected papers vol. How and what a therapist decides to ask questions about greatly influences the nature of the therapeutic encounter, as well as the effectiveness and efficiency of treatment. Conceptual logic out of which the process of inquiry unfold, and basic strategies and techniques of brief therapy from a Systemic and Constructivist viewpoint will be described. Participants will be provided specific methods of inquiry basic to effective and efficient problem resolution. 1. Develop clearer understanding of being mindful of the four interrelated premises of system thinking: a. The precariousness of using the symptom as a starting point for investigating family and situational interactional process. b. The implications deriving from and individual versus interactional viewpoint. c. Lineal vs. circular causality, and d. Non-pathological and non-normative viewpoint. 2. How to join through gathering information about the problem 3. How to elicit client language, worldview, position about the problem in context 4. How to understand and use the pace then lead technique in therapy
4 Program Title: Counseling the Intersection between Hopelessness and Hope. Is it Ever Too Late? Presenter: Thomas Estis, Ph.D., NCC, LPC, LPC-S, LMFT, LMFT-BAS, LAC, ICAAC (Working Lunch) Start Time: 11:30 End Time: 1:00 CEUs: 1.5 Presenter Biograpghy: Thomas Estis, Ph.D. is the Clinical Director/Owner of Aimwell Recovery Center Monroe, LA. He was previously the Clinical Director/Co-Owner of Woodlake Addiction Recovery Center in Ethel, Louisiana. Dr. Estis holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work, a Master s Degree in Substance Abuse Counseling with a Minor in Marriage and Family Therapy, and a Bachelor degree in Sociology. Dr. Estis has more than two decades of professional experience in working with individuals and family counseling, particularly in the area of substance abuse/dependence and dual diagnosis issues. Dr. Estis is a National Certified Counselor (NCC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LPC), Licensed Mental Health Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Board Approved Supervisor (LMFT-BAS), Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC), and International Certified Addiction Drug Counselor (ICADC), and Louisiana Privilege Counselor Certification. He is an active member of the Louisiana Counseling Association, American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors and Trainees. He has served on the Louisiana Association of Substance Abuse Counselors and Trainees Board which is influential in promulgating substance abuse policy for the state. His research regarding the relationship between spirituality and addiction has been presented at State, Regional and National conferences and forums. Dr. Estis personal experiences as an ACOA shaped his professional philosophy of addiction and recovery. Combining insights from his family of origin and professional training has intensified his desire to offer hope to those who have alienated themselves from self and others via alcoholism, addictions, and/or responses to life s circumstances. This presentation will highlight the initial association between hopelessness and hope as the disturbing emotional access that affords the counseling/therapeutic intervention or clinical process to begin. Various Theorists explanations of the hopelessness and person(s) usual responses will afford foundational and systemic insight of the intrapersonal and interpersonal
5 relationships. Comparisons between persons demonstrating Neurotic symptoms verses Character Disorders and the contrasting methods of interventions will be shared. 1) Understand the extent of possible mental and emotional incarceration and hopelessness transpiring at the initial or onset of counseling/clinical work 2) Recognize the intrapersonal and needed interpersonal dynamics of the personality 3) Identify the person being counseled as either one with Neurotic or Character Disorder features 4) Detect which therapeutic approach would be more appropriate to utilize 5) Unnecessary suffering is the result of endeavoring to avoid disappointing events 6) Compromising of morals, values, and virtues is associated with the loss of hope 7) Regaining hope and ultimate happiness requires a commitment to transformation Program Title: "Good Diagnosis--Bad Therapy" Presenter: Tom Moore, MA, M.MFT, LPC, LMFT (Ethics) Start Time: 1:15 End Time: 4:30 CEUs: 3 Presenter Biography: Tom has been married to his wife Karen for thirty-nine years and has three daughters, Holly, Hillary, and Kelsey. He is a forty-seven-year resident of Louisiana, now residing in Bossier Parish near Benton, Louisiana. Tom graduated from Louisiana Tech University in 1978 with a degree in education. He taught high school science and English before returning to Ruston in 1980 to complete a master s degree in counseling from his Alma Mater. In the years to follow, Tom entered school administration while continuing to teach. In 1984, Tom moved his family to Abilene, Texas to work on a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy at Abilene Christian University. He received this degree in 1986, returning immediately to the Shreveport area where he administered a private foster care agency for several years. In 1988, Tom received the LPC license and went into private practice as a family therapist in Shreveport. Tom served on the executive board of LAMFT in 2000 during the passage of the licensing law for MFTs. He stepped down from this position in 2001 to accept an appointment
6 by the governor to the first Marriage and Family Therapy Advisory Committee to the Louisiana LPC Board of Examiners on He served on the Advisory Committee to the Board for twelve years, serving as Chair his last year. He was the third person in Louisiana to receive the LMFT license. Tom also serves as an Approved Supervisor for Counselor and MFT provisional licensees. While working in his private practice for the past 38 years, Tom has consulted with several agencies in the Shreveport-Bossier area, including the Center for Families, where he served as Clinical Supervisor for twenty years. He has served as an adjunct instructor in family therapy as LSU in Shreveport and has directed the LSUS Family Therapy Institute through the LSUS College of Continuing Education. This institute evolved into what is now the Red River Institute for Family Therapy, which Tom directs. In 2010, Tom was recognized by LAMFT as the Outstanding Educator of the Year. Tom has offered marriage workshops around the country and has been very active in promoting missionary care, providing training and support to churches and missionary families in the US, Mexico, Scotland, Ghana, and Togo, West Africa. What is the real connection between diagnosis and treatment? Does assigning a DSM diagnosis to a client help or hinder the process of psychological, emotional, and relational healing? From a systemic perspective, the presenter will explore the clinical, ethical, and political aspects of the formal diagnosing of mental and emotional disorders using taxonomies like the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and the International Classification of Diseases. 3 CEHs in Ethics. 1. Explore ethical principles related to the application of formal diagnoses of mental and emotional disorders. 2. Explore the connection between the act of diagnosis and the process of treatment. 3. Become aware of the systemic implications of assigning diagnostic labels. Program Title: Neurobiology of Stress Presenter: Edward Lynam, M.D., Psychiatrist (Assessment and Diagnosis)
7 Presenter Biography: Start Time: 4:45 End Time: 6:15 CEUs: 1.5 Dr. Edward Lynam, MD completed undergraduate studies and medical school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, completing these in He then completed residency training in general and child psychiatry at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh in This is considered one of the top centers for psychiatric research, teaching, and clinical care in the country. Since then, he has devoted his career to the treatment of children, adolescents, and young adults. Following his training, Dr. Lynam practiced in a rural area of southeastern Ohio for 12 years. He was medical director of several clinics and worked as a member of a team of professionals providing care to a wide range of childhood onset mental health disorders. He taught medical students at Ohio University in Athens. In 2006, he relocated to Reno, Nevada, where he taught at University of Nevada, Reno, and participated as medical director or consultant for a number of clinics in Reno. While there, he published his first book. He has moved to Ruston in 2016, following his wife s appointment as an assistant professor at LA Tech. Dr. Lynam s approach is always directed at restoring and maintaining children on a healthy developmental path so that they can have optimal functioning as young adults. His experience helps assure that medication interventions are used only when needed as part of the overall treatment plan. Summarizes the current understanding of the biological responses to psychological stress. 1) The participant will be able to identify key systems and processes involved in the stress response. 2) The participant will gain insight into identify stress symptoms. 3) The participant will expand knowledge of how to intervene to ameliorate stress symptom. Nicole s passion is working with children and adolescents. Nicole currently is a counselor at Brentwood Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. She specifically works with the Partial Hospital Program (PHP) for children and adolescents at Brentwood. This presentation will discuss the play therapy approach with children and adolescents. A focus upon the basics of play therapy will be explored including: what is play therapy, common toys used in therapy, examples of play rooms, and various techniques and approaches. 1. Learning what play therapy is. 2. Differentiating between directive and nondirective play therapy. 3. Learning common themes found in play therapy. Program Title: Addiction Pearls Presenter: Dr. Jay Wiess, MD, Psychiatrist Start Time: 9:45 End Time: 11:15 CEUs: 1.5 (Assessment & Diagnosis) Presenter Biography: Dr. Jay Weiss is currently Medical Director of the Palmetto Addiction Recovery Center, a 100- bed inpatient addiction treatment center in Rayville Louisiana. He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 30 years of military service in 1997 after service as a Navigator and a Psychiatrist. He began working at Palmetto in He is board certified in Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, Addiction Medicine and Psychosomatic Medicine. He serves as a consultant to the Federal Aviation Administration and holds Airline Transport Pilot, Flight Navigator and Flight Instructor certificates. This presentation gives an overview of substance abuse including definitions, disease concept, anatomy, neurochemistry, risk factors, defenses, statistics, comorbidity, history, reward circuitry,
9 chronic pain, intervention, detoxification and treatment. Addictive medications and professional populations with addictions are also addressed. There is a section on monitoring programs and treatment programs for professionals. 1. Understand and describe the disease concept of addiction. 2. List and describe common behaviors and defenses in addictions. 3. Understand the reward circuitry of addiction. Presenters: Nikki Eidt, LPC, LMFT, Whitney W. Foster, LPC Start Time: 11:30 End Time: 1:00 CEUs: 1.5 (Working Lunch) Presenters Biography: Whitney Foster provides therapeutic services to individuals, couples, and families with diverse backgrounds and issues. Ms. Walker is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LA # 4738) registered in the state of Louisiana. She approaches therapy from a systemic perspective, meaning that she focuses on the interactions and relationship patterns among all parts of the client's system (family, school, work, social, etc). Ms. Walker works with individuals, couples and families to navigate difficult circumstances and the emotional burdens that often accompany them. Ms. Walker believes in strengthening oneself to be an integral part of the counseling process and works to restore hope, purpose and opportunity to relationships and life itself. Ms. Walker has gained much experience treating young children and adolescents in different contexts; working clinically with young children struggling with depression, anxiety, separation anxiety, children of divorced families, school behavior problems and authority concerns. Play therapy techniques are utilized to create an enjoyable experience, which elevates and brightens children's spirits and outlook on the therapeutic experience. Ms. Walker believes that play is fun, and it can expand self-expression while stimulating creative
10 thinking, regulating emotions, and boosting self-esteem and ego. She believes play therapy techniques can relieve children's resistance to therapy and create a life changing experience grounded in learning crucial skills which are necessary to thrive and succeed in life. Ms. Walker graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Nikki Bolton Eidt offers therapeutic services to individuals, couples, and families experiencing distress and difficult circumstances. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LA # 5683) and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #1221) registered with the State of Louisiana. Nikki graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Louisiana at Monroe. She has experience working with people of all ages, from young children to senior citizens. She has years of experience providing counseling to individuals learning to cope with loss of independence, sudden life changes, anxiety, disturbed thinking, stress, loneliness, and depression. Nikki enjoys working with children and adolescents experiencing bullying, anger management, anxiety, depression, behavioral issues within the home and school, divorce, grief, suicidal ideation, self-harm, as well as physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. She believes that young people deserve support and guidance to create a positive foundation on which they may grow to their full potential. 11 Presenter Biography: Erin Rockett, MA, LPC-S, LMFT; is a Clinical Fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy. She grew up in southern Mississippi and Arkansas. After earning a B.A. in secondary education (1992), and MA in Marriage and Family Therapy from Northeast Louisiana University (1996), she served as counselor for a juvenile Department of Corrections program. In 1999 she was Clinical Director for Our House emergency shelter care program for teens in Monroe, LA. She served as Family Therapist for Louisiana Methodist Children s Home for 13.5 years, becoming an LPC supervisor in Her work there included individual, family, and group therapy, clinical supervision, staff training course instruction, assisting with various chapel programming, and representing the home in various social agency contexts. In addition to serving as a frequent speaker and consultant on ASD, other clinical practice areas include trauma intervention, (EMDR), grief work, and educator consultation. She has presented workshops on autism spectrum disorders, consultation paradigms, and client spirituality at regional and national conferences. She completed Forensic Interviewer training from the National Academy of Child Advocacy Centers, and has also undergone training in both EMDR and Theraplay. She was awarded the Order of Good Shepherd award for volunteerism, by Louisiana Methodist Children s home in December of In 2013 she left the children s home to begin private practice focused on organizational training, and consulting for child and adolescent issues, autism spectrum disorders, and grief/trauma work. Erin s clinical work is greatly influenced by the family systems, solution-focused, narrative, and trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy traditions, in addition to attachment-based work. Her background as an educator brings an awareness of developmental theories, learning modalities, and research-informed practice. In addition to clinical work, Erin plays an active role in numerous arts regional arts organizations, including choral groups and Ruston Community Theatre. She has served a board member and project chairperson for Junior Auxiliary of Ruston, a volunteer organization focused on children s advocacy. For several years Erin has increasingly engaged in children s ministry in her worship setting. Ministry-based roles include children s choir director and staff consultant. She also recently served as Director of Children s Ministry at a local church for two years. This presentation will examine the current prevalence of clinician burn-out while identifying contributing factors. Participants will explore the impact of burn-out on practice dynamics and personal health of the clinician. Self-care strategies from the health, wellness, and artistic
12 disciplines will be explored during the session with both s of some hands-on scientific evidence, and through the whimsy of hands-on activities. (1) Review current statistics and contributing factors on clinician burn-out in the helping professions (2) Examine effects of burn-out on clinical practice dynamics (3) Identify the impacts of clinician burn-out on provider s physical, emotional, and relational health, (4) Identify popular health-based self-care strategies and the scientific evidence of efficacy (5) Explore hands-on, uncommon self-care practices from the arts and other disciplines Program Title: The Order of Personality DIS-order Presenter: Burton Ashworth, PhD (Clinical Psychologist) (Assessment & Diagnosis) Start Time: 3:00 End Time: 4:30 CEUs: 1.5 Presenter Biography: Burt Ashworth, PhD, is an assistant professor at University of Louisiana at Monroe and provisionally licensed Louisiana clinical psychologist who specializes in psychological testing of children with Asperger s and autism spectrum disorders. His many other careers include truck driving, and working as a logger and as a machinist. He also is a licensed teacher and taught Spanish in middle school. He has been known to ride a motorcycle and for many years was a successful pastor. There is an order to the initiation and progression of personality disorders. The DSM-5 acknowledges the order by using descriptors in the criteria sections, such as an enduring pattern, a pervasive pattern and a persistent need. The presentation will address the etiology and development of personality disorders, as well as evidence-based treatment modalities. 1) Define personality disorder 2) Discuss the etiology and development of personality disorders 3) Describe treatments of individuals experiencing personality disorders 4) Summarize disseminated information
13 Program Title: "Treating Ole' ED: Helpful Considerations for the Screening, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Level of Care Determination of Eating Disorders." Presenter: Jennifer Harris, LPC Start Time: 4:45 End Time: 6:15 CEUs: 1.5 (Assessment) Presenter Biography: Jennifer has been a Licensed Professional Counselor since She completed her undergraduate degree in Music Therapy from William Carey College in 2001, including a music therapy internship at River Oaks Hospital in New Orleans, and was awarded the Master of Science in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis in Mental & Behavioral Health from Mississippi College in Having recently relocated to Louisiana, she is employed as a therapist at the Family Counseling Center of Louisiana Methodists Children and Family Services in Ruston. In addition to clinical practice, she has held positions in administration and education, including program manager of intensive community-based services and intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization programs, chair of a trauma-informed system of care task force, outpatient clinical director of an IOP/PHP for eating disorders, and adjunct faculty for college programs. Jennifer's professional interests include counselor education and supervision, the treatment of anxiety disorders, attachment injuries, trauma and trauma-based related behaviors, and eating disorders/disordered eating. She is currently pursuing advanced trauma certification through the Ross Institute as well as the Certified Eating Disorders Specialist credential (CEDS) through the International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals. Eating Disorders are scary. With the lack of graduate training provided concerning eating disorders combined with the fact that eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of psychiatric diagnoses, it's understandable that most clinicians are hesitant in treating eating disorders. This general overview will provide clinicians with helpful tips in the screening and treatment of eating disorders. Diagnostic criteria will be reviewed, along with common eating disorder behaviors, useful treatment modalities and interventions, and examination of the APA Level of Care Guidelines that can help keep both the patient and the clinician safe during treatment. Resources concerning further professional development and support will also be provided.

Participants will identify behaviors and potential physical/medical complications related to eating disorders. 3. Participants will identify the etiology and several theoretical frameworks used in treating eating disorders. 4. Participants will be provided with the American Psychiatric Association s guidelines for level of care for the treatment of eating disorders. 5. Participants will be provided with a few treatment interventions/activities as well as resources to help in the treatment of eating disorders.
