This program s educational information is based on the HIPAA & HITECH laws, research into expert opinions on those laws, interviews with government officials, the APA Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct & Guidelines for the Practice of Telepsychology (as well as codes of ethics and technology-related guidelines from other professions), and the professional experience and expertise of the presenter. Roy Huggins, LPC, NCC, is a counselor in private practice who also operates Person-Centered Tech, his tech-consulting firm that serves the professional helping community. Roy worked as a professional Web developer for 7 years before changing paths, and makes it his mission to grow helpers understanding of the Internet and other electronic communications mediums for the future of our practices and our professions. He acts as the Technology Committee Chair for the Oregon Counseling Association and is on the Advisory Board for the Zur Institute. He is also an adjunct at the Portland State University Department of Counselor Education. This presentation is offered for a total of 4 Category 1 CE Credits. Participants must sign in, be present for the entire Presentation: Cultural Competency Counseling and Latino/Hispanic Culture Presenter: Elena Parra, PhD Date: October 17th from 2:00-5:00 PM CE's: Psychologists can earn 3 CE's for this presentation through SAPA This presentation is aimed at enhancing the mental health professional's clinical skills and professional understanding of the current practice of psychology and counseling within a multicultural context and/or framework. Knowledge will be imparted about the various components of multicultural counseling relevant to working with Hispanic populations. The impact of differences will be analyzed and specific information will be provided about the role of culture-specific factors (i.e., the tricultural self). The validity of the materials to be presented is based on research findings by major cultural experts in the fields of counseling and psychology and the author of this presentation. It is the purpose of this presentation to
3 assist counselors and psychologists in maximizing the positive impact of intervention when working with Hispanic populations. 1) List and describe major components of multi-cultural counseling. 2) Discuss, apply, and demonstrate knowledge of the impact of cultural worldview and cultural specific factors on personality functioning, family relations, and in the formation of the self in persons of Hispanic/Latino descent. 3) Compare, analyze, and describe the impact of bicultural counselor-client relationships and to identify the role of cultural differences, bias, and oppression in both the counselor and the client. Dr. Elena Parra obtained her doctoral degree at the University of Arizona in 1983 and completed a postdoctoral program in Neuropsychology at Camarillo State Hospital in California. Dr. Parra has a professional interest in cross cultural research that includes the study of multicultural issues in therapy, intervention and learning, hypnosis, and forensic psychology. She was a full time professor for approximately 14 years at the following universities: University of California in Fullerton; University of San Diego; University of Arizona; and Argosy University Dr. Parra has also published several articles in recognized professional journals such as Journal of International Psychology, Journal of Divorce and Remarriage, and Journal of Educational Policy. She is currently holds a position as a director and psychologist at Multicultural Counseling Center. This presentation is offered for a total of 3 Category 1 CE Credits. Participants must sign in, be present for the entire Presentation: Creating a safe, secure emotional connection- The tenets of Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples Presenter: Francis Almstrom, LMFT Date: October 18th from 8:30 AM - 11:30 AM CE's: Psychologists can earn 3 CE's for this presentation through SAPA Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples is a well researched and documented model for the provision of marital therapy. It is the only model, to date, that shows a better than 70% success rate in terms of decreasing the distress experienced by couples pre-therapy. Many psychologists choose to provide marital therapy to clients and need to know the options available for obtaining specific training for doing so. This presentation will provide sufficient information on one such model that attendees can determine if further training in the model will be a good fit for them. The presentation will provide information on the model, it will not equip attendees to employ the model without first obtaining the specific comprehensive training. 1) Describe the system piece of EFT, including the most common negative-interactive pattern created by couples seeking therapy and its specific components. 2) Describe how attachment theory fits in EFT, including the two most common insecure attachment styles and how they manifest in couples' attempts to get attachment needs met. 3) Describe the role of experiential therapy in EFT, including how using emotion, rather than containing it, in the session helps build connection and create safety for couples - and therapists. Frances Almstrom LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and in private practice in Tucson, AZ. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Developmental Psychology
4 from the University of British Columbia, a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Counseling in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy from the University of Phoenix. She has completed psychodrama training to the level of Assistant Director and Advanced training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) including additional training in using EFT with families and in addressing attachment injuries (including infidelity). She has also acquired specific education and training relative to attachment theory. This presentation is offered for a total of 3 Category 1 CE Credits. Participants must sign in, be present for the entire Presentation: Imago Therapy: Navigating Communication for Couples in Conflict Presenter: Karen Olson, LPC Date: October 18th from 12:45-2:45 PM CE's: Psychologists can earn 2 CE's for this presentation through SAPA When relationships get tough, it can be hard to listen, and impossible to feel heard. Imago therapy shows you how to reconnect by using a new way of talking together, called the Imago Intentional Dialogue. This presentation helps you discover what lies underneath relationship conflict, and how you can assist clients in resolving this conflict as a team. The basic assumption of Imago (Latin word for image) is that committed partnerships have a higher calling/mission than simply the pursuit of happiness. The purpose is to help each other heal the childhood wounds that are part of all of us. The premise of Imago is that we are called into relationship in order to heal these relational wounds. Because we are born in relationship, and we are wounded in relationship (by imperfect parents), healing occurs most effectively within a relationship. 1) Discuss the developmental dynamic underlying conflict in intimate relationships. 2) Use the skill of Imago intentional dialogue (especially "mirroring") as a therapeutic tool to teach it to clients. 3) Identify the three components of the Imago Intentional Dialogue. 4) Describe why safety is necessary for relationship change to occur. 5) Explain the 3 phases of relationship: Romantic Love, the Power Struggle, and Conscious Love. 6) Describe how the unconscious forces that attract people to their partners are also the source of their conflict and how this conflict can be transformed into healing and growth. Karen Olson, MA, LPC, has made Tucson her home since 1993 when the desert spirits called her away from the rainy Pacific Northwest. Her early career was spent working as a counselor for Carondelet Behavioral Health. In 2007, she founded Caritas Center for Healing as a manifestation of her life-long passion for natural, integrative healing. Karen is also passionate about working with couples, utilizing the Imago therapy model as outlined by Dr. Harville Hendrix. She has received both basic and advanced training in this method from Maya Kollman. She has been a certified Imago therapist since 2010 and was recently certified as a presenter for the couples workshop, Getting the Love You Want. Additionally, she has received Levels I and II training in EMDR and is seeking certification in this. This presentation is offered for a total of 2 Category 1 CE Credits. Participants must sign in, be present for the entire
