CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of The Study One of the real problems in human s daily life is anxiety. Anxiety can include many aspects of life such as social, economic, religious and cultural aspect. Everyone has anxiety in his life. Commonly people do not like problem because they tend to get pleasure in their life. When human gets problem in his life and cannot solve it, he tries as far as he can avoid it. But human cannot escape from this problem. By avoiding it, human will get anxiety in his life. Problem cannot be avoided. Human must overcome it and handle his problem because it can reduce the anxiety. Psychoanalytic principle is part of psychoanalytic study. The term of psychoanalysis has fundamental assumption that the mental element of human is divided into two levels, the conscious (the rational) and the unconscious (the irrational). Sigmund Freud, an Austrian Physician established the psychoanalytic theory of human being personality in the early 1900s. Freud described three components of personality; they are id, ego and superego. In defining anxiety, Freud emphasized that a felt affective, unpleasant state, accompanied by a physical sensation that warns the person against impending danger. The unpleasantness is often vague and hard to pinpoint, but the anxiety is a key variable in almost all theories of 1
2 personality. The result of conflict is an inevitable part of life. Anxiety is often seen as a major component of personality dynamics (Hall, 1985: 41). Breaking Dawn (Part 1) is a set of romantic fantasy films directed by Bill Condon and based on the novel Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer. All three main cast members, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprise their roles. The movie follows 2008 s Twilight, 2009 s New Moon, and 2010 s Eclipse. Breaking Dawn is divided into two parts. Part 1, rated PG-13, was released on November 18, 2011, and Part 2 will be released on November 16, As of January 2012, the first film has grossed over $701 million worldwide. Part 2 will be released by Lionsgate in the US, in consequence of the merge between Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment. Part 1 was released on DVD on Saturday, February 11, 2012 in the United States. There was a special midnight release event, with a sneak peek of Part 2, at participating Target stores. The scene was of Bella, now a vampire, and Edward in their cottage. William Bill Condon (born October 22, 1955) is an American screenwriter and director. Condon is best known for directing and writing the critically acclaimed films Gods and Monsters,Chicago, Kinsey, and Dreamgirls. In 1998, Condon debuted as a screenwriter in Gods and Monsters, which won him his first Academy Award. He was also nominated for Chicago. In 2006, Condon won a Golden Globe for his film Dreamgirls, which he wrote and directed. Condon s films have been both commercial and
3 critical successes. Condon is a member of the Independent Feature Projects (IFP) in Los Angeles, a non-profit organization which supports independent films, as well as the Independent Writers Steering Committee, which was initiated by the Writers Guild of America (WGA). He gained a lot of attention in 2010 when it was announced that he would direct both parts of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn adapted from the fourth and final novel in The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Breaking Dawn is the fourth and final novel in The Twilight Saga by American author Stephenie Meyer. Divided into three sections, the first and third sections are written from Bella Swan s perspective and the second is written from the perspective of Jacob Black. The novel directly follows the events of the previous novel, Eclipse, as Bella and Edward Cullen get married, leaving behind a heartbroken Jacob. When Bella faces an unexpected situation, she does what it takes to undergo the ultimate transformation and fight the final battle to save her love. Breaking Dawn (Part 1) is sequel of the previous series, Eclipse, which tells about the marriege s planning of Bella and Edward. According to the novel, this movie is divided into three section. The first section details Bella s marriage and honeymoon with Edward, which they spend on a private island, called Isle Esme, off the coast of Brazil. Two weeks into their honeymoon, Bella realizes that she is pregnant with a half-vampire, halfhuman child and that her condition is progressing at an unnaturally accelerated rate. After contacting Carlisle, who confirms her pregnancy, she
4 and Edward immediately return home to Forks, Washington. Edward concerned for Bella s life and convinced that the fetus is a monster as it continues to develop with unnatural rapidity, urges her to have an abortion. However, Bella feels a connection with her unborn baby and refuses. The second section is told from the perspective of shape-shifter Jacob Black, and lasts throughout Bella s pregnancy and childbirth. Jacob s Quileute wolf pack, not knowing what danger the unborn child may pose, plan to destroy it and kill Bella. Jacob vehemently protests this decision and leaves, forming his own pack with Seth and Leah Clearwater. The fetus in Bella s body grows swiftly and Bella soon gives birth, but the baby breaks many of her bones, including her spine, and she loses massive amounts of blood. In order to save her life, Edward changes her into a vampire by injecting his venom into her heart. Jacob, who is present for the birth, immediately imprints -an involuntary response in which a shape-shifter finds his soul mate- on Edward and Bella s newborn daughter Renesmee, after attempting to kill her while in the hands of Rosalie. The third section shifts back to Bella s perspective, describing Bella s painful transformation and finding herself changed into a vampire and enjoying her new life and abilities. However, the vampire Irina misidentifies Renesmee as an immortal child, a child who has been turned into a vampire. Because immortal children are uncontrollable, creating them has been outlawed by the Volturi. After Irina presents her allegation to the Volturi, they plan to destroy Renesmee and the Cullens. In an attempt to
5 survive, the Cullens gather other vampire clans from around the world to stand as witnesses and prove to the Volturi that Renesmee is not an immortal child. Upon confronting the gathered Cullen allies and witnesses, the Volturi discover that they have been misinformed and immediately execute Irina for her mistake. However, they remain undecided on whether Renesmee should be viewed as a threat to vampires secret existence. At that time, Alice and Jasper, who had left prior to the confrontation, return with a Mapuche called Nahuel, a 150-year-old vampire-human crossbreed like Renesmee. Nahuel demonstrates that the crossbreeds pose no threat, and the Volturi leave. Edward, Bella, and Renesmee return to their home in peace. Thus, by understanding the movie, the writer has interest and wants to research on it according to these following reasons. First reason is the theme of this movie is love; it can make the writer easier to analyze the movie. Jacob Black is a werewolf who loves Bella very much. Although Bella has married with Edward, Jacob still gives attention to Bella. Even, he sacrifices to save Bella from the dangers. The second reason is the characters are interesting to analyze. Jacob Black has a unique character and personality. Bella describes Jacob as a happy person who extends this happiness to the people around him. As Jacob s character emerges in Eclipse, he is shown to be cheery, passionate, adventurous, but hot-headed. Jacob is also able to phase at will into a giant wolf, and sometimes when angered he will involuntarily phase. His body temperature is warmer than a human s body should be, reaching about 108.9
6 F (42.7 C), which allows him to withstand very cold weather. His body also heals quickly, he can communicate with his werewolf pack telepathically when in wolf form, and he is physically stronger and faster than a human. Werewolves do not age if they regularly turn into their wolf form, with Jacob s body physically grown to the equivalent of a 25-year-old. Once they begin phasing, a werewolf may imprint a method of finding one s soul mate on someone, and will act as whatever the imprinted needs, whether it is a protector, a lover, or an older sibling. In Breaking Dawn (part 1), he has a lot more willingness to save Bella from the dangers. The third reason is plot of the movie is chronological. It makes the writer easier to understand the movie. The climax happens more than once. The first is Bella realizes that she is pregnant with a half-vampire, half-human child and that her condition is progressing at an unnaturally accelerated rate. Edward concerned for Bella s life and convinced that the fetus is a monster as it continues to develop with unnatural rapidity, urges her to have an abortion. However, Bella feels a connection with her unborn baby and refuses. The next climax is when Bella gives birth to her child, and then Bella becomes a vampire. The last reason is about the setting of the movie. The setting is very interesting. Some of the settings of Breaking Dawn (part 1) movie are romantic places, because almost of the movie tells about the honeymoon of Bella and Edward in some romantic islands.
7 That is why the researcher is interested in analyzing the major character, Jacob Black, because he has very important role in the plot, and gives information about psychological phenomenon. The researcher uses Psychoanalytic Perspective to analyze this movie and takes a title for his research: ANXIETY OF JACOB PERSONALITY IN BREAKING DAWN (Part 1) MOVIE DIRECTED BY BILL CONDON (2011): A PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE. B. Literature Review The writer chooses the Breaking Dawn (Part 1) movie because it is interesting to be analyzed. As long as the writer knows, there is no research that has been conducted to study the Breaking Dawn (Part 1) movie especially in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta because this movie is new release. C. Problem Statement Based on the background of the choosing the subject above, the problem statement is How is the anxiety of Jacob Black reflected in Bill Condon s Breaking Dawn (Part 1) movie? D. Limitation of The Study In this research, the writer gives limitation to focus on psychoanalytic perspective. It emphasizes on anxiety of Jacob Black as main character in Bill
8 Condon s Breaking Dawn (Part 1) movie script by employing psychoanalytic perspective as the primary approach. E. Objective of The Study The objectives of the study are: 1.
