Counseling Sexually Compulsive Clients Mental Health and Missions 2017 Michael John Cusick, M.A., L.P.C. President, Restoring the Soul Author, Surfing For God
Five Assumptions of The Surfing For God Approach Not about suppressing lust or managing sexual desires. Is about legitimate god given desires gone awry It s about understanding that we are broken (and how) It s about understanding there more to the Christian life. We see sexual brokenness as an opportunity.
The Soul Snare Cycle Soul Brokenness Soul Shame Soul Preoccupation Soul Snare
The Soul Care Path Soul Brokenness Soul Freedom Soul Attentiveness Soul Care
The Therapeutic Matrix I. PRESENT STORY 2. LIFE STORY 4. INNER STORY 3. ADDICTIVE STORY
The Soul Care Path Soul Brokenness Soul Freedom Soul Attentiveness Soul Care
7 Points Of Data You Must Pay Attention To
1. Pay attention to your own convictions about change.
2. Pay attention to client s assumptions about God & the nature of change.
3. Pay attention to the client s nervous system and somatic presentation.
4. Pay attention to your own energy level in the session.
5. Pay attention to their history of trauma.
6. Pay attention to their style of relating with you.
7. Pay attention to priors. Prior to seeing you What have they understood the cause to be? What have they tried in hopes of changing? What do they see as the way out?
Ten Things You Must Do In The First Six Sessions
1. Create a safe, shame-free environment, instilling hope.
2. Listen to their present day story & struggle.
Questions to Ask About Present Day Story What specifically brings you in? Day to day and month to month. Who else knows about your struggle? What s the relational impact? How do you handle that impact? Where is the greatest point of pain in all this? How do you feel about yourself? How does God feel about you or toward you?
3. Listen to their life story & narrative. What are the major themes you hear? What do you not hear? What are their thematic wounds? What trauma do you you hear? What is their attachment style? What were the messages and experiences around need and want?
4. Connect their life story to their inner story
5. Connect their inner story to their compulsive behavior.
6. Explore experiences around desire, longing, and thirst.
6. Identify lies and beliefs that fuel addiction and compulsion.
7. Engage client in renouncing and breaking up with lies and falsehood.
8. Provide psychoeducation about your brain on porn.
9. Mentor the client in play, soul care rhythms, emotional regulation, and relational connection as a primary form of deep repentance (soul care see Isaiah 30:15.
The Soul Care Path Soul Brokenness Soul Freedom Soul Attentiveness Soul Care
10. Teach client about the 90 Day Reboot (see slides below and video)
The Deck flip a card in the deck Every day card measures days of soul care, not sobriety if you fall keep going (don t reset to beginning)
The Heart Key word: awareness what am I feeling (or not)? what am i aware of in my body? what am I longing for? What legitimate need do i have?
The Club Key Word: deception what is the lie i m believing? What are my shame triggers?
The Diamond Key Word: truth what does the voice of love say about me and to me? What defines me today?
The Spade Key Word: initiate what action must I take so my could can live? who will I connect with? what will make tomorrow a better day?
