2 Mental health: a state of well-being Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. (WHO)

4 Mental Toughness explained Mental toughness improves mental health, well-being and performance in order to help people thrive Resilience Hardiness (Kobasa, 1970) Positive Mindset (Seligman, 1998) Growth Mindset (Dweck, 2006) Grit (Duckworth, 2016) Mental Toughness (Clough, 2012)
5 Mental Toughness: the definition Mental Toughness is not about acting tough. There is toughness in a sense of not giving up, managing yourself, and being confident that you will prevail. Mental Toughness is a personality trait which determines how individuals perform when exposed to stressors, pressure and challenge... irrespective of the prevailing situation. (Clough & Strycharczyk 2011)
6 Mental Toughness: the components Mentally Tough individuals deal better with stress and anxiety, and perform better under pressure. Mental Toughness has four components The 4 C s of Mental Toughness 1. Control: I really believe I can do it. I can keep my emotions in check when doing it. Self worth, Efficacy. 2. Commitment: I promise to do it I ll set a goal. I ll plan it. Tenacity, Stickability, Grit. 3. Challenge: I am driven to do it. Setbacks make me stronger. Seeing opportunities not threats. 4. Confidence: I believe I have the ability to do it. I can stand my ground if I need to. Self Belief.
7 Mental Toughness: the measurement The MTQ is a valid and reliable psychometric survey and world s most widely used mental toughness measurement Mental Sensitivity Average Mental Toughness
8 Mental Toughness: scalability Mental Toughness can be developed in any organisation. It can be scaled by building licensed in-house coaching capability The four C s of Mental Toughness are measured with the MTQ. The world s first reliable psychometric survey that measures Mental Toughness. The MTQ is conducted on-line and easily scalable for large groups. We can provide on-line coaching, training and facilitation in over 80 countries. We can build your coaching capability and provide in-house Mental Toughness accreditation. This can be done on-line or in workshop format.. Mental Toughness online provides online and face to face coaching and operates with five accredited Mental Toughness master trainers in Australia. AQR is a global leadership development company that owns the world s only valid Mental Toughness measure. They have a global network of Mental Toughness coaches.

I became an accredited mental toughness coach and founded MentalToughness.online after a tough period in my life and career. Niels van Hove I now love to help people getting the best out of themselves and combine my consulting career with coaching and writing. My mission is to bring mental toughness to the world; one individual, family, school or company at the time. MentalToughness.online s mission is to bring Mental Toughness to the world. It provides free and paid resources for individuals and organizations to help them improve their mental strength, well-being and performance. My Books My Strong Mind teaches children about resilience, a growth mindset, confidence and that it s OK to try and fail. I wrote this book for my two daughters. Building Mental Toughness is a self-help guide for adults. It helps to develop a positive approach to life and its challenges. I wrote this book after a tough period in my career. 10
11 Business case: a hypergrowth and innovative company Role The Healthy Warrior is an innovative fast moving consumer goods company with brands like 247, The Bar Counter, Planet Food, My Yummy Lunch Box. Healthy Warrior has seen hyper growth, which started to impact their customer service, costs and overall business control. The objective was to design and implement a new operating model and develop a clear understanding if the team had the appropriate mindset to continuously support their fast innovation cycles and hyper growth. Without a doubt the best message that Niels left our team was that we play above the line. As a team and as team members we take personal responsibility to create a very positive can do culture. Design a new operating model and select and implement a supporting planning system. Assess the company s mental toughness profile with the MTQ48 survey. Create awareness about how mental toughness could support the new operating model, roles & responsibilities. Develop a short intervention cycle; the team received weekly thought provokers and exercises by to remind them of their potential in the new way of working. Results Renewed pro-activity between sales and operations in support of new product development. Energized acceptance of the new cross functional operating model.
