Greenwood Institute of Child Health School of Psychology Published Books and Book Chapters written by Greenwood Institute Staff Professor Nisha Dogra Professor Panos Vostanis Dr Khalid Karim Dr Michelle O Reilly
About the Authors Professor Panos Vostanis is Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Leicester in the UK, and Consultant at the Leicestershire child mental health service. In his clinical capacity, he works with a mental health service designated for vulnerable children, young people and families. In his academic capacity, Panos is actively involved in a number of research projects on child trauma. When asked what his focus was when writing his latest book Children of Despair, Children of Hope he answered I wanted the children s characters and narratives to come across, without losing sight of the evidence. Professor Nisha Dogra is Professor of Psychiatry Education, and Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She undertook training in paediatrics before training in psychiatry, and then as an academic child psychiatrist. With regards to writing books, she says "for me writing books is about making information about the important area of mental health, and especially child mental health, accessible to different audiences. Dr Michelle O Reilly is Senior Lecturer at the University of Leicester. Michelle has an interest in various areas of child mental health, undertaking research and publishing in the areas of autism, self-harm, family therapy and mental health assessments. For her, writing books is about synthesising the evidence in a given area and providing pedagogical tools to facilitate learning. Michelle is the director of two research groups focused on social interaction and language. Dr Khalid Karim is Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow at the University of Leicester, and Consultant Child Psychiatrist at the Leicestershire mental health service. Clinically he has a specialist interest in neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly Autistic Spectrum Disorders. He has extensive experience of diagnosing and managing the co-morbidities associated with these conditions. His published material is mainly around this topic as well as on education.
Future releases O Reilly, M. and Parker, N. (coming soon) Advanced Qualitative Research: A Guide to Contemporary Theoretical Debates. This theoretical and applied book will be a valuable resource for all researchers, academics and students who plan to undertake qualitative research. This timely piece is important for enabling good research practice, and moves on from foundational texts by building on this knowledge. The chapters will enable readers to progress in their thinking and practice, through an exploration of the key theoretical issues in qualitative research. The aim of this book is to illuminate the advanced qualitative theoretical debates that have emerged, and to provide an accessible overview which will facilitate broader engagement from a wide range of audiences. Its emphasis will be on explicating the theoretical aspects of the main issues in a readerfriendly manner, which will be complemented by a practical focus to facilitate application. Readers will be guided through the complexities of each of the emergent developments within the qualitative paradigm. As researchers often find the task of assimilating evidence from a range of disciplines and sources complicated, particularly given the level of theory related to many of the issues, this book aims to amalgamate this into one accessible resource to provide a platform for understanding. London: SAGE Publications O Reilly, M. and Parker, N. (in press) Doing Mental Health Research with Children and Adolescents: A Guide to Qualitative Methods. Michelle O'Reilly and Nikki Parker combine their clinical, academic and research expertise to take your students step-by-step through each stage of the research process. From first inception to data collection and dissemination, they ll guide them through the key issues faced when undertaking their research, highlighting the dilemmas, challenges and debates, and exploring the important questions asked when doing research with this population. *OUT SOON* London: SAGE Publications
Khalid Karim, Alvina Ali and Michelle O Reilly (2014) A Practical Guide to Mental Health Problems in Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder: It s not just their autism! This book explores the relationship between mental health and ASD. Illustrating with case studies a wide range of mental health issues commonly found in autistic children, the authors go on to suggest practical strategies for parents and professionals to help ameliorate the difficulties which arise from these co-morbid mental health conditions. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers Panos Vostanis (2014) Helping Children and Young People who Experience Trauma: Children of Despair, Children of Hope. An invaluable tool for practitioners of child mental health and social care background, policy makers, students and researchers. It provides guidance on evidence-based therapeutic interventions and services for vulnerable children and young people who experienced abuse, domestic violence and other traumas; and who are in care, homeless, adopted, refugees, or perpetrators. London: Radcliffe Publishers
Michelle O Reilly, Pablo Ronzoni and Nisha Dogra (2013) Research with Children: Theory and Practice. Thought-provoking, pertinent and engaging, this book provides an overview of every aspect of carrying out research with children. It is unique in its particular focus on vulnerable groups of children such as those with mental health, physical health and learning problems. Filled with practical advice and useful activities for each chapter, this is an essential resource for any student, academic or professional working with, or doing research with, children. London: SAGE Publications Edited by Nisha Dogra, Brian Lunn and Stephen Cooper (2011) Psychiatry by Ten Teachers. An essential purchase for every medical student and junior doctor. This book follows the renowned Ten Teachers highly-praised and successful tradition of providing key information written by ten respected experts in the field. Completely up to date, it encourages students to get the most out of their psychiatry attachment and help them to pass their exams; as well as providing key advice on providing quality medical care, regardless of the field in which they decide to specialize. Useful tips and advice ensure that this is more than a standard introduction to the subject, encouraging additional reading, support critical thinking and bringing exam success. London: Hodder Arnold
Barry Wright, Subodh Dave and Nisha Dogra (2010) 100 Cases in Psychiatry This book presents 100 scenarios commonly seen in the hospital and community setting. The patient s history and examination are described, with questions on the diagnosis and management of each case. The answer includes a detailed discussion on each topic, providing an essential revision aid, as well as practical guide for students and junior doctors. These cases will help students and junior doctors to recognise important medical conditions in psychiatry, and to develop their diagnostic and management skills. London: Hodder Arnold Edited by Nisha Dogra and Sharon Leighton (2009) Nursing in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. This book is relevant to nurses at all levels, but especially useful to postgraduates and nurses in specialist child and adolescent mental health services. Drawing upon the academic evidence and grounded in the clinical reality, the book looks at how to asses the different issues and interventions used in practice. The authors consider the effect of child and family development on mental health, as well as broader factors influencing mental health and well-being. Berkshire, England: Open University Press
Edited by Panos Vostanis (2007) Mental Health Interventions and Services for Vulnerable Children and Young People. This book provides guidance on effective and appropriate therapeutic interventions and services for this complex group. By linking practice with evidence, theory and policy, it enables professionals working with vulnerable children to choose the right intervention for each child. This book is an invaluable tool for those working with vulnerable children and young people, including child mental health and welfare professionals and agencies, social workers, policy makers and academics teaching or studying child mental health. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers Nisha Dogra, Andrew Parkin, Fiona Gale and Clay Frake (2002) A Multidisciplinary Handbook of Child and Adolescent Mental Health for Frontline Professionals. This is an accessible introduction to child mental health, covering the nature, prevalence, treatment and management of mental health problems in children and young people. The authors explore issues such as assessing and meeting the mental health needs of young people, and legal aspects of working with child mental health. This edition includes material on working with culture and diversity, and an update on current medication. London: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
